Did anyone see it? Northbound between Oxford and Cherwell Valley at around 1330?

traffic stopped, entrance blocked, loads of motorbikes, black SUV’s, Black range rovers all with blacked out windows, about 30 vehicles, plus a helicopter.

Wonder who it was for? I assumed Royalty but I’ve seen them before in London and on motorways and the entourage was nothing like this, no helicopter either.

Sometimes they practice...

He’ll definitely have to fly. The M6 just isn’t the place for self-important Yanks. I can’t imagine he’d be getting out of the car in a 6 hour standstill traffic jam, and playing footy with the car in fronts Jack Russell.

Perish the thought

I expect they'll fly to Prestwick

Wolbutter · 10/08/2025 18:07

21 vehicles in his entourage to Hampton Court this morning. And a helicopter

SerendipityJane · 10/08/2025 17:47

I'd rather they didn't.

By the same token, I would never expect a British politician of any stripe (or even HRH himself) to be allowed to take armed UK security to the US.

When it comes to the IPPs it tends to be a case that they, or at least some of them, can import some of their own armed protection.

For example Armed Protection Officers, usually from SO14 of the Met, may well be used to protect some members of the Royal Family, when overseas.

Well, let me tell you a secret service story. My friend used to work (at a very low level) with Bill Clinton back in the 00s. We lived in NYC then. They did a week long event where he was around a lot (normally he was like in the same building but she rarely saw him). But because she was working more closely with him and shuffling him around to where he was meant to be at this event, she got to know a few of his secret service agents.

At the end of the week, ole Billy flew off to his country house somewhere and his secret service agents were free until they had to fly home the next day. My friend invited them out for drinks and said she’d find some friends to show them around the city for the night, and was like, omg, do you want to go out drinking with Bill Clinton’s secret service agents?! I was like give me 20 minutes.

These guys were an absolute hot mess. They told us all sorts of stories about shit they probably should not have. One knocked a tooth out falling over doing a shot. The other was so drunk he fell down the stairs, an entire flight of stairs, to the bar basement looking for the toilet. My friend and I had to put them in a cab eventually and just hope they made it safely back to their hotel. 🤣 I always think of them when I hear stories about secret service. Because if they are anything like these fools, no wonder they need so many of them!

MyNameIsX · 10/08/2025 18:16

Lammy, meanwhile, was seen waiting Han Solo at Platform 4 of Didcot station for the delayed 14.35….

Are they the ones who have fake arms but the real arms are inside holding the guns

Well they’re simply the hired help with brawn. No brains required. Loads of them about.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 10/08/2025 18:18

He’s staying for six weeks apparently. Is he going to have that level of escort every time he goes out, round the small lanes of the Cotswolds? God help the locals!

Why are our tax payer police resources being used on this person? Why are they not bringing their own security/using private security uk based?

Do you honestly believe that our vice president's life would be entrusted to foreign country's security?
They use their own equipment and personnel, flying on a US Air Force C-17 Globemaster or C-5 Galaxy aircraft, landing at a USAF base in the UK.

Being very visible as secret service is part of the point. It puts off people who might be tempted to have a go.

There will be others around that you won't have noticed. In the crowd. Possibly on rooftops.

Hopefully they have smartened up their act a bit as they have been a bit useless over the past few years. The guy that nearly shot Trump on the golf course shouldn't have got anywhere near as close as he did if they were doing their jobs properly and I think a few heads rolled over that one.

Years ago, Mobama came to our village. I took DS who was 3 at the time, to the barbers in the village that morning.

There was secret service man having his hair cut at the same time. It was hilarious. He was built like the proverbial, having a short back and sides and presumably getting the lay of the land from the barber.

Very self important aren’t they. I don’t think they understand uk culture. They would’ve been safe in a couple of Ford Mondeos (top spec of course), with a couple of Bobbys. That’s definitely be cheaper for us tax payers as well.

Is This where the private school VAT went?

JustMyView13 · 10/08/2025 18:22

Pondering the double standards that we’ll cover such extensive security for a US private citizen on a family holiday, but we will not provide any security for another US private citizen when they come for various reasons including work & personal.

It’ll be taxpayer funded given it was made quite clear that Met police security is not for sale.

Sonolanona · 10/08/2025 18:23

If his entourage blocks up the back lanes here I will not be the first to reverse😂 I've had YEARS more practise round our little Cotswold lanes!

Princess Anne drove past me on her way to a charity event in town. She was in a big old Bentley type car and driving herself whilst chattering away with a chap in the passenger seat. No outriders, no blue lights, no kerfuffle.

Got to love Anne 💕

When I lived at home, many moons ago, I’d often see Princess Anne out and about driving her horse box. There was zero kerfuffle about that either.

He landed at Stansted. Which is our secure airport for anything high risk

Given 7 US presidents have been shot it might be worth letting another country with some decent security skills have a go at the job of keeping the fool safe.

samarrange · 10/08/2025 18:30

Regardless of what you think of JD Vance (I can't stand him), remember that this is not down to him. The US State Department and Secret Service have a very large budget for overseas trips and they are determined to spend it. The level of OTT would be the same for Obama or any other US President/VP that you might like better. I remember GW Bush arriving in Australia for some summit or other and one of the first things he did was apologise for the disruption to a major city that he knew was caused by any trip that he made.

Many years ago, Ronald Reagan visited the place where I worked. At one point the schedule called for him to get out of the car and wave to the crowds for 10 seconds outside the entrance. A block of 50 flats overlooked the spot, with a decent sniper view, so everyone was evacuated from there for 2 nights beforehand and housed in nice hotels. At the back end of the building was a car park exit that crossed a pavement, where a couple of rather rickety "slalom" barriers had been installed to stop people emerging too quickly and knocking down pedestrians - these were removed because they would have added 5 seconds to the Presidential ambulance's exit time, in case he had been shot and wounded or was having a heart attack or whatever. After Reagan's visit they were replaced with a considerably more solid arrangement, all at the US taxpayers' expense.
