Rumors had been circulating online about the US President’s health, with some even speculating he had died. [they have?!]

Oh they have, twitter has been a hot bed of death rumours the last few days. I ended up staying up late last night to watch the press conference (well the start of it. Trump annoys me so much I had to turn off) just to see if he really was alive still.

Between this Trump's peace push falters in both Ukraine and the Middle East — for similar reasons
and this
Behind Ukraine’s manpower crisis lies a bleak new battlefield reality for infantry
then this
As Ukraine’s fate hangs in the balance, ‘Soviet’ command culture damages war effort
I felt completely despondent. Russia could be brought to its knees financially if Trump decided it. Surely as he only seems interested in trade deals, it would be to his advantage to weaken Putin.
Reading of the manpower shortage and how they suffer, the lies in the chain of command and old fashioned soviet thinking, all resulting in unnecessary deaths. Ukraine doesn't have any more men to call on. They're down to prisoners, the too old and the unfit.
Sanction Russia and its allies to Hell and get Putin to heel.

Trump's peace push falters in both Ukraine and the Middle East — for similar reasons

U.S. President Donald Trump addressed a wide range of subjects during his inauguration speech. When speaking about international relations, he was adamant — "Our power will stop all wars and bring a new spirit of unity," he said, talking about Russia'...

Reading of the manpower shortage and how they suffer, the lies in the chain of command and old fashioned soviet thinking,

It's a misnomer to refer to it as Soviet thinking. The same rigid command doctrine, suppression of initiative, false reporting of troop readiness and unwillingness to pass bad news up the chain of command are still alive and well in the modern Russian army.

Ukraine's problem is that most of it's senior officers were trained in Russia or by the Russians. There was a concerted effort to change this with the help of western militaries after Ukraine became independent. As that article states, this is seen in the push back from younger officers. So for Ukraine, it's a mix of command styles, with the lower levels operating better. This is good, as those are the levels of command closest to the battlefield.

And the problems are much worse for the Russian army, where the command dysfunction is still fully in control from top to bottom. It is their greatest weakness militarily.

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar argh that must have happened overnight. Yeah, why fix what is not broken. I prefer the previous clunky but easy to navigate splash page [stuck in the mud]

3 Sept is now out.

https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-september-3-2025/

Key Takeaways

  1. Russian President Vladimir Putin explicitly stated that he does not consider Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be the legitimate president of Ukraine, invalidating the very basis of any future peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
  2. Putin himself is responsible for Ukraine’s inability to legally hold the referendums and elections for which Putin is calling.
  3. Putin and other high-ranking Kremlin officials continue to explicitly and publicly state that they are committed to achieving Russia’s original war aims through military means.
  4. Putin underscored his continued commitment to his theory of victory, a belief that Putin first outlined in June 2024, on September 3.
  5. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko continues to publicly deepen Belarusian integration into Russia.
  6. The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) attempted to use footage showing a small-scale infiltration mission to lend legitimacy to inflated claims by Russian Chief of the General Staff Army General Valery Gerasimov on August 30 that Russian forces had seized roughly half of Kupyansk.
  7. The Russian MoD’s claims about Kupyansk have failed to convince large parts of the Russian milblogger community, even Kremlin-affiliated and coopted milbloggers.
  8. The Kremlin appears to be trying to exploit the mapping methodologies that have become widespread throughout the war, including from OSINT sources like ISW.
  9. Russia launched another large-scale combined drone and missile strike against Ukraine on the night of September 2 to 3—the fourth combined strike of over 500 drones and missiles since the August 15 US-Russia summit in Alaska.
  10. Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Pokrovsk, and Russian forces recently advanced in the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area.

https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-september-4-2025/

Key Takeaways

  1. The British and French-led Coalition of the Willing and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Paris to discuss possible future security guarantees for Ukraine that aim to ensure a just and lasting peace on September 4.
  2. Macron stated that a strong Ukrainian military must be at the center of any postwar security guarantees.
  3. Macron stated that 26 states formally agreed to form a “reassurance force” as part of security guarantees for postwar Ukraine.
  4. The Kremlin continues to explicitly reject any foreign troops on Ukrainian territory as part of postwar security guarantees.
  5. The Coalition of the Willing also outlined ways for states that are unable to deploy ground, sea, or air assets to participate in security guarantees for postwar Ukraine.
  6. The Coalition of the Willing discussed additional sanctions against Russia with US President Donald Trump as part of coordinated Western efforts to deny Russia funding for its war against Ukraine.
  7. Russian bankers continue to express concerns over the increasingly stagnant Russian economy.
  8. Ukrainian forces advanced near Kupyansk and Siversk and in the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area. Russian forces advanced in northern Sumy Oblast and near Velykomykhailivka.

(kyivindependent.com/analysis-despite-a-grand-announcement-europe-takes-zero-steps-towards-peace-in-ukraine/)
On Sept. 2, Russia and China outlined their vision of a multipolar world that would likely see democratic Europe largely abandoned by the U.S. and facing the nightmare scenario of direct confrontation with an emboldened, war-hungry Russia.
Two days later, democratic Europe responded with a plan for stopping Russian aggression in Ukraine that almost certainly won't work.
The plan, presented by French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, relies entirely on the goodwill of two of the very people responsible for the current predicament — U.S. President Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The US will deliver new cheap long-range cruise missiles ERAM to Ukraine in October, — Aviation Week.
Ukraine will receive the first 10 missiles in October, and the first large batch of 840 ERAM is planned to be delivered by the end of 2026, the publication writes, citing US Armed Forces documents.
Earlier, Washington approved the sale of up to 3,550 Extended-Range Attack Munition (ERAM) cruise missiles to Ukraine. They are compatible with the F-16 and MiG-29 and are designed to strike important targets deep inside Russian positions, Aviation Week notes.

On the night of September 5, the AFU struck several important enemy targets, — General Staff.
• Ryazan Oil Refinery: hit on the ELOU-AVT-6 primary oil processing unit.
• Positions of two S-400 air defense systems in the Kaluga region: preliminary reports indicate a hit on the KSHM and a control point.
• Ammunition warehouse in the Luhansk region: secondary detonation was recorded.

⚡️Fico explained his anti-Ukrainian policy to Zelenskyy
“We could explain some points to each other and insist on our positions. We have different views on some topics, but such is life… these things happen. I respect and hear the president [Zelenskyy], and the president respects and hears me. Maybe sometimes it doesn’t look like that based on what is published in the media, but as the Prime Minister of Slovakia, I want us to have good relations,” said Robert Fico.

Slovakia will not play a decisive role in security guarantees for Ukraine, — Fico

Slovakia supports Ukraine in its path toward EU membership, — Zelenskyy after a conversation with Fico
“This is very significant. We also see that Ukraine and Moldova should continue to move together toward European Union membership. It is equally important that bilateral cooperation on economic, energy, and infrastructure issues in our region strengthens our peoples and countries,” the president said.
He also informed Fico about yesterday’s conversation with Trump and the work with leaders of the “coalition of the willing” to bring peace closer and guarantee Ukraine’s security.
“Slovakia will not remain on the sidelines. The Prime Minister spoke about his contacts in China. A separate and important issue is Europe’s energy independence. Russian oil, like Russian gas, has no future,” Zelenskyy added.

🤬 Russians have begun actively attacking the Sloviansk–Izium highway with FPV drones.

Live: Ukraine Telegram Highlights

🇺🇸 The US has warned it will cut security funding for countries bordering Russia, FT reports, citing sources.
The move will hit Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia the hardest.
The White House is urging Europe to pay more for security on the continent, stressing that some of these countries would be on the front line in the event of any conflict with Russia.
The Trump administration has not requested additional funds for European security assistance. Existing allocations will remain available until the end of September 2026.
According to Senate estimates, security funding for Eastern European countries will be reduced by several hundred million dollars.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that security guarantees should be provided both to Ukraine and to Russia.
He also noted that there are “no preparations yet” for a conversation between the Russian ruler and the US president. However, according to him, “such a conversation could be arranged very quickly.”

🇪🇺🇺🇦 Europe is preparing to deploy two ground groups to Ukraine as part of security guarantees, WSJ reports, citing a European diplomat.
Commanders from European states in the “Coalition of the Willing” have developed a detailed plan for troop deployment in Ukraine.
According to the plan:
— One group will train and assist Ukrainian forces.
— A second, separate support force will act to deter a future Russian invasion.
The current plan requires sending over 10,000 troops. Air patrols will be carried out by air forces based outside Ukraine.
The source said the plan incorporates proposals from several US generals who took part in the discussions, including NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Alexus Grynkewich.
▪️ Earlier, FT described a preliminary version of the security guarantees plan for Ukraine, which envisioned three lines of defense — with European deterrence forces positioned on the third line and backed by US logistical support.

🇺🇸 The US would lead monitoring of a buffer zone in Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement with Russia, NBC News reports.
According to the channel’s sources, the buffer zone could be a demilitarized area separating territories controlled by Russia and the Ukrainian government inside the country. The exact borders of this zone have not yet been determined.
The plan envisions the US monitoring the buffer zone with drones and satellites, while the area could be guarded by troops from non-NATO countries, such as Saudi Arabia or Bangladesh.
According to media reports, this plan was developed after the August 15 meeting between US President Donald Trump and Putin in Alaska. It is seen as part of Ukraine’s potential security guarantees but remains theoretical until agreed upon by Putin and Zelenskyy.
Sources told the channel that part of Ukraine’s security guarantees will likely involve forces from non-NATO countries, since the involvement of Alliance troops — or even the suggestion of it — is unacceptable to Russia.
▪️ Politico previously reported that European leaders were considering the creation of a 40-kilometer buffer zone along the front line in Ukraine. According to its sources, military and civilian officials have been discussing such a zone as a possible element of a peace deal and of Ukraine’s postwar security framework. The US is not involved in those discussions.

❗️Polish protesters have blocked traffic at the border near the Medyka-Shehyni crossing.
The protest is taking place about one kilometer from the Polish checkpoint, directly across from Ukraine’s Shehyni. The blockade began at 12:50.
Restrictions apply only to trucks and may last at least six hours. Passenger cars and buses are unaffected.
Currently, 681 trucks are registered in line to leave Ukraine, while about 100 are waiting to enter at a designated parking area, where they will still be processed.

🇱🇹 In Lithuania, sirens will sound when drones enter the country that may pose a threat.
According to the new alert system approved by the Lithuanian government, if a drone carrying explosives enters the country, a red alert will be declared.
If the military determines that the drone does not pose a threat, a yellow alert will be declared.
The Lithuanian Interior Ministry warned citizens that in addition to danger notifications on their mobile phones, sirens will now also sound in the streets.
▪️ Earlier it was also reported that starting in 2026, Lithuania plans to deploy a Ukrainian acoustic drone detection system. The need for this arose as incidents of drones crossing from Belarus increased — at least two such cases were recorded in July alone.

In August, Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) carried out a special operation in the Black Sea.
Special forces from the Department of Active Operations went to sea and attacked Russian targets with drones.
As a result, Ukrainian operatives destroyed:
🔴A BL-680 multipurpose high-speed boat;
🔴A “Harpoon-B” radar system;
🔴A “Groza” electronic warfare system.
In addition, fighters burned four enemy antenna-feeder devices used for signal transmission and inflicted personnel losses on the occupiers.

They'll bring a plane down one day then act the innocent.

@PiggyPigalle they've shot down two passenger flights with surface-to-air missiles to my knowledge since the beginning of the conflict, and the consequences have been sod all.

Putin just confirmed: RUSSIA WILL TARGET UKRAINE’S ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE.

This is news? They've been at it for years now

Agreed, the Russians have been trigger happy already with no consequences

I know I said I wasn't going to comment further on that GPS incident so I won't, but I'll leave a link to a decent summary of events and how it was reported..

Does sound like reporting got carried away with that story, as you suggested earlier. Wish they wouldn't do that.
On the same subject though I read this article today, over 120000 flights affected by Russia's jamming in the Baltic region this year alone. Article says to the point of compromising aviation safety but doesn't actually explain how. But the sheer number is bad enough.
