I'll start with:

  1. Choosing a video or DVD from Blockbusters
  2. Pic n mix from Woolworths
  3. Puffy triangle snacks/crisps. I can't even remember what they were called.
  4. Walkmans and mixed tapes
  5. Simplicity e.g. only having 4 TV channels, not having 1001 chocolate bars to choose from etc

Watching things at the same time as everyone else. Its so easy to feel disconnected to the world now

That's it really tbh, life is better for me now 😭

LemonyPicket · 02/08/2025 20:05

Schools being more flexible and not stuck to the national curriculum, phonics etc. Teachers used to have a lot more autonomy and time and space to do things they thought the kids would enjoy and find beneficial.

Most of us aren't that important that we've to be available 24/7.
The genie Is out the bottle but pre internet, thriving high streets, more retail employment, entry level jobs/Saturday jobs for teens etc.

People had manners , if you were waiting for a bus or a train, if you were at the front you got on first . Now I;ve noticed that other commuters will barge in front to get on I AM here y'know they would mow you down to get the seat

Your favourite pop stars had their own teeth , no plastic surgery . OK some make-up and hair dye but not like now .

And if you heard a woman being interviewed they spoke in a regular voice , regional accent or lose the accent , whatever .
Now young women speak in Vocal Fry which makes me wince and switch off , more difficult IRL but I do mentally switch off from them

Being able to see my GP on the day I want to.
Getting dental treatment on the NHS.

Apparently, these things are still possible in some first world countries…

TheChippendenSpook · 02/08/2025 21:01

Fewer cars

Allthesnowallthetime · 02/08/2025 21:02

When a lunch break was an actual break (in office jobs).

When there were so few cars that we used to play in the road.

Walking to school at the age of 5 was considered normal and safe.

10p a week pocket money went a long way.

Magazines were good value.

Mavvera · 02/08/2025 21:05

Most things, I'm glad I'm old now so at least I had a decent youth. I couldn't imagine being young in these days

DancingLions · 02/08/2025 21:11

Dating. People would make the effort when they were out to get talking to the opposite sex as there weren't many alternatives. Now people just stay in their groups and/or sit on their phones.

Being asked out on a date in person. Not having to go through the tedium of OLD to try and find someone.

Men who haven't been ruined by porn! In the "old days" men were just happy to have sex. Now they feel cheated if they cant play out every fantasy.

I don't date any more as I just hate every aspect of it now.
