Things you miss from the 'good old days'

I'll start with:

  1. Choosing a video or DVD from Blockbusters
  2. Pic n mix from Woolworths
  3. Puffy triangle snacks/crisps. I can't even remember what they were called.
  4. Walkmans and mixed tapes
  5. Simplicity e.g. only having 4 TV channels, not having 1001 chocolate bars to choose from etc

The thunk of arrival through the door of the Next Directory, pouring through it, circling the things I liked and the novelty of ordering them and them coming to the door!

RaraRachael · 02/08/2025 23:14

The excitement of waiting for your holiday photos to arrive from Bonusprint.

Misspacorabanne · 02/08/2025 23:16

So much…
days before the internet,
family members no longer here,
having to wait for things… waiting a week for next episode of a tv show and looking forward to it, waiting to find what I need from the shops rather than afew clicks on Amazon and have it arrive the next day or even same day(yeah, I know, it’s fast and convenient, but hate that we get what we want so quickly, all the time)
sitting down and talking as a family at night (nobody on a phone)
Traditional little shops and running errands with my mum,
i used to collect Trolls and the excitement that bought when I was able to find a new one.
christmas selection boxes, much more variety,
easter eggs that were bright and eye catching,
mars delight and echo bars,
the free gift in a box of cereal, and fighting over who gets it!
Those brightly coloured stickers used to decorate your bike and helmet!

A fiver and a lipstick 🤣 Somehow we managed to make it work back then didn't we?

Until one friend (there was always one) got kicked out of the club for being too pissed. Miraculously they always got home though and Sunday morning was spent ringing around friends asking if Louise was ok 🤣

Yes!! 🤣

Im ashamed to say i was always The Friend Who Needed Looking After.

I do t think i ever got kicked out of a club but i was an awful wanderer off'er - fight starter - or ''yes we'll all get in your car and go back to yours totally strange bloke who i've only known for 10 minutes'' er.

Thank god my lovely DDs are somehow nothing like i was at their age!!

whiteroseredrose · 02/08/2025 23:18

Oh god I remember the whole 'going off with guys in cars' after clubs 🫣 My parents had NO idea 😅

Actually, it's a miracle I'm still alive and didn't end up on a Netflix true crime documentary 🫠

Going on holiday and no one expecting updates on it.
Or just in general being able to exist without having to be in constant contact.

Honestly, why do you feel that people need to be updated on your holiday? Is this because people contact you and ask, or because you want to post about it on social media?

As a general rule people don't need to be constantly in contact - how come you do? Perhaps something like a disabled family member? I can't see any other obvious reason for it and if it's stressful to you, it may help you to figure out a way that you don't need to do so.

madameimadam · 02/08/2025 23:42

Proper 80s Christmasses -
Delia Smith’s Christmas
those shit coloured foil metallic decorations
Getting the Christmas bumper Radio Times AND TV Times and circling the stuff we were going to watch
Getting excited about the big film on Christmas Day

I was clearing out the loft after my mum died and found a load of Christmas decorations including a set of lights . The sort with little frilly coloured lanterns on them. The smell was unbelievable. Pure 1986. I did plug them in and they still worked!! (I then unplugged them quickly as they were probably banned and my mum always warned me that they’d burst into flames if we kept them plugged in 🤣)

madameimadam · 02/08/2025 23:49

And also gettin up really early to watch kid’s telly at the weekend - Muppet Babies, Ulysses, Going Live, No 73, Jem, Thundercats, The Racoons…

In fact, the excitement of telly that you had to wait for cannot be underestimated. I used to be SO excited for the next episode of Robin of Sherwood on a Saturday teatime.

Also, those brilliant teatime dramas for kids - The Cuckoo Sister, Moondial, The Children of Green Knowe, The Box of Delights, Narnia. Just brilliant telly.

backslashruby · 02/08/2025 23:51

The Argos catalogue. Seriously, I really looked forward to it coming out. Every February and August.

Car cd player

I still have one in my twelve year old Nissan Note.

YelramBob · 03/08/2025 00:08

Who remembers the Britannia Music Club? Five CDs at 99p each! What could possibly go wrong? 🤷

Abasin · 03/08/2025 00:13

People not being on their phones. It was considered rude to use a mobile phone in enclosed public spaces. The Dom Joly character lampooned the type of person who would, portraying him as crass, and oblivious to the discomfort of others. Now people sit on trains and go round shops making video calls, playing music, playing games. Public spaces no longer require public-facing behaviour, from any of us.

researchers3 · 03/08/2025 00:17

My body
My old mates
Some of my old boyfriends
My dog

Talking to people on the phone or in real life, not endless messaging

Meeting guys in real life. OLD is generally so bad.

When everything was cheap.

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 03/08/2025 00:18

I’d love for Sunday closing to come back.

devuskums · 03/08/2025 00:28

ThreeCooks · 02/08/2025 20:03

All of that ..

sitcoms in the same vein of Terry and June..

People watching the same TV programme then discussing it next day

Aerobics/step aerobics classes !!

I do a body conditioning class at my local leisure centre that has step aerobics as a big part of it, it's ace!

Mountainsfar · 03/08/2025 00:31

2 p sweets

no phones

Obimumkinobi · 03/08/2025 00:31

You could buy reasonably priced tickets for the top bands of the day. My DC won't get to see their favourite bands live, which is a real shame.

MoonWoman69 · 03/08/2025 00:38

Proper Lucozade in the glass bottles and with the orange cellophane. Not the horrible tasting stuff it's become!
Brookside omnibus on a Saturday teatime! My mum always made us a chilli, with half home made chips and half spaghetti and we used to sit and watch it.
Going out anywhere for the day/night without having to fight crowds of other people.
Recording the Top 20 on a Sunday and stopping it just before the DJ spoke!
Mint Crackle and Ice Breaker chocolate bars.
Proper seasons, not all merged into one like now!
The Two Ronnies and the original Poldark with Robin Ellis.
Being able to go out on a Friday night with a tenner, getting 20 Consulate and a a kebab with garlic sauce on the way home and still having change!
YTS schemes.
C & A and BHS.
Ah the memories of the good old days!

DelphiniumBlue · 03/08/2025 00:45

Ringing up my bank and talking to my bank manager if there was a problem, or if I wanted to extend my overdraft.
Ringing up Inland Revenue, or my energy provider or any service provider and get to speak to someone who knew their stuff and could deal with issues and explain things.

TulipTuesday · 03/08/2025 00:51

I was watching an old episode of Extras earlier. In the background was a carton of Ribena. I could taste it just from the image.

That’s what I miss, proper Ribena that tasted of gorgeous, sweet blackcurrantness. Not the shit they try to palm us off with these days.

Housechallenge · 03/08/2025 01:04

People were more funny. People could take a joke but also People were kinder.

Sitcoms. Watching tv as a family. Take aways used to be an occasional treat. Children playing out. Cheaper term time holidays.

Meadowfinch · 03/08/2025 01:34

Phone batteries that lasted a week.

No3392 · 03/08/2025 01:38

No responsibility!

I was so desperate to be a grown up. Now I just want to be cuddled, fed and nap.
