I'll start with:

  1. Choosing a video or DVD from Blockbusters
  2. Pic n mix from Woolworths
  3. Puffy triangle snacks/crisps. I can't even remember what they were called.
  4. Walkmans and mixed tapes
  5. Simplicity e.g. only having 4 TV channels, not having 1001 chocolate bars to choose from etc

The accepted notion that there WAS such a thing as society, and that public service was an honourable calling.

Jackie and Mizz magazines
Being able to drive up to Oxford street and park down a side road near the giant Top Shop (for free) and go shopping. In fact, being able to drive and park anywhere and any time in central London for free.

Girl About Town magazine on the London underground.
Woolworths and BHS.
Contance Carrol makeup (shimmer pink lipstick and electric blue eyeliner and mascara).
When burger and chips for dinner would just be two Birds Eye burgers and home cooked chips, no fancy brioche bun or salad in sight.
Trifle from a packet.
Dream topping.
Watching That's Life on a Sunday evening as a family (even though the dread for school was hanging heavy on my shoulders).
Wimpy bars on most high streets. Going to a Wimpy every Easter with my mum, dad and brother and having a knickerbocker glory for desert.
Taping my favourite songs from the charts on a Sunday.

Makingmusicinmy50s · 04/08/2025 00:11

Oh, also Spud U like.

Just reading the thread about the £11 jacket potato and remembered this!

When a lunch break was an actual break (in office jobs).

When there were so few cars that we used to play in the road.

Walking to school at the age of 5 was considered normal and safe.

10p a week pocket money went a long way.

Magazines were good value.

I used to get 6d a day pocket money. When my DF had some spare money, he would buy himself a Mars bar, DM a Topic and me a Cadbury's Flake which I had to eat over a newspaper so as not to waste any or make a mess. They were all 10d, so I couldn't get one myself unless I saved up two days worth of pocket money.

surelynot16 · 04/08/2025 05:42

Getting the mail at breakfast time.

books/toys in cereal.

glass bottled milk/milkman.

carton of milk & Roger red hat book at school 🤣

knocky nine doors; poor kids can’t now with ring doorbell 🥹

collecting reflectors from Frosties for your bike wheels.

collecting ring pulls for Coca Cola/fanta/dr pepper yo-yos - what a time to be alive 😃

smash hits magazine

just seventeen magazine

Britannia music club

MerryForever · 04/08/2025 08:14

Spud u Like! So hard to get a decent jacket potato now.

Bodyshop Dewberry perfume

Music having to be paid for - streaming services like Spotify are killing music; smaller musicians can earn nothing now.

No mobiles or social media; they’ve ruined so many people’s ability to be in the moment. Especially my dd’s generation (20). She agrees.

Independent high street shops and small family businesses. Different in every town.

Generally there being less of everything. This is a world now of way too much choice.

"The good old days". That tells me someone's IQ straight away.

JerryGiraffe · 04/08/2025 08:29

Proper Saturday morning cartoons and decent Saturday night TV
Going out was an occasion - meal, theatre etc and you bothered to get dressed up for it
Toys/tat/spokey dokeys in cereal boxes (oh the excitement!)
Tree swings and dens that you made not bought
Simple Birthday parties- musical bumps, pass the parcel....

ChocolateCinderToffee · 04/08/2025 08:34

Being able to browse shops and find what you wanted.

The internet before it was ruined by AI, crap algorithms and advertising.

paying £9.99 to get into chessington world of adventures ( and not pre booking!)

watching eastenders on Tuesdays and Thursdays only

Saturday morning tv- going live, cd uk

sunday morning tv- Lost in space,

fish and chips on a Friday being a cheap take away option

Spud U Like still exists in places - but it isn't what it once was, the jackets are tiny nowadays compared to what they used to be like and they give you crap wooden cutlery - it's near impossible to cut the skin of a jacket with a wooden knife. There's one in the White Rose Centre in Leeds where I occasionally have lunch.

Sheknowsaboutme · 04/08/2025 10:20

Walking down the street in town a d seeing local shops. Grocers, book shop, florist, cafe…

not a foreign barber, nail bar and vape shop in sight.

Were they good? Easy enough to get rid of your smartphone and go shopping without going online. More people have cars now so the idea of free parking in eg London or MCR is just a memory. Need less cars in city centres.

Appalonia · 04/08/2025 13:50

Fantastic clothes shops, shoe shops, record shops and department stores. I used to love a good browse but the High Street is pretty grim these days and internet shopping just isn't the same.

The excitement of buying a new album and going home to play it.

The high street.
The latest issues of Sugar, Bliss and Shout magazines
Soaps being on far less frequently but having more slow burning, gripping storylines, Sharongate for one.
The lack of judgement and insecurity being felt due to the lack of social media.
The singles charts really feeling like they mattered.

MyHazelOtter · 04/08/2025 15:00

The Bunty comic delivered every Monday morning.
The Corona man who came, once a week with his lorry. We were each allowed to choose a flavour
Coal fire being lit on a winters day.
Roast dinner every Sunday lunchtime.
Rag and bone man with his horse
Coalman delivering the coal around the back and counting the sacks

I remember going to the Reading Festival for £50, Glastonbury was also that price. A gig ticket to see Smashing Pumpkins cost me £15 (and that was on the expensive side) Manic Street Preachers £11. I can't afford to even get the train to these things let alone go to them now.
