Sydney Sweeney

I keep seeing posts on my SM about Sydney and the controversy behind her advertisement for some jeans. I’ve seen multiple posts about it being controversial but I can’t understand why, she’s got a low cut top on but I wouldn’t consider it low enough to cause the attention it’s getting. Please can someone tell me what I have missed?

If it is something really obvious and I’m being an idiot I promise I’m not being goady, I genuinely can’t figure it out.

OP posts:

This is the woman who sells a soap that has her "used, dirty" bathwater as an ingredient.

Her target audience is pretty specific.

You’d have to be pretty stupid to think the soap is genuinely made with Sydney Sweeney’s bath water. If there’s any truth in the marketing I would guess she jumps into a swimming pool-sized vat for 2 seconds.

But I agree that the target audience for the soap is teenage boys and sad old men.

The jeans are clearly aimed at women. Of all colours and ages.

If you look at what is going on and has been going on in the USA with BLM (and the money disappearing), CRT in schools, Trans issues, woke issues, Dylan Mulvaney, how race is pushed in colleges/universities and various groups stating that white is bad etc.

It is very easy to see why a company would choose to run this sort of campaign.
Yes it does have eugenics overtones and they have chosen a good looking white woman that has been harangued by the press and various social commentators for her looks and abilities. .

But however you look at it, it certainly comes under "there's no such thing as bad press". Unfortunately it won't provoke much in the way of structured debate from the majority of people.

A quick look tells me that the soap was made by the company Dr Squatch, a men's grooming products company as a limited run.
So not exactly the gotcha that you think that it is.

AE have manipulated Democrats into promoting their brand by using a model and double entendres meant to shock.
It’s shocking because the US has ICE deportations etc going on so blonde, blue eyes, big boobed SS talking about jeans/genes is going to bristle with some and embolden the MAGA types.
While SS is a MAGA pin up girl, she’s going to have to be careful that her career doesn’t suddenly end when political tastes in the US change again. There are plenty of sexy blondes who have pivoted to roles that appeal to women as well as men who will see longer careers because of it.

What makes you think Sydney Sweeney is a democrat?

MayaPinion · 02/08/2025 10:39

Tiredofme · 02/08/2025 07:47

@MayaPinion

There were plenty of other people commenting on her looks on this thread.
Are you going to be similarly rude to them and tell them nobody cares about their opinion?

Get a grip, FFS.

Think you need to read that post again. PP is not saying SS is a democrat.

What does AE have manipulated Democrats into promoting their brand
mean then?

I also don’t think Syndney Sweeney is controlled by Democrats. It’s a strange reach. The whole thing is around this campaign.

But as PP said it’s worked. I now know who -
American Eagle are

You're totally missing PP's point.

AE have manipulated Democrats into promoting their brand by using a model and double entendres meant to shock.

Which Democrats exactly though

Because SS is an "all American girl" who refuses to endorse Kamala anyone politically, and who doesn't alliege to the general blue hair doctrine. She doesn't take the knee, she isn't part of the #bekind brigade, and she gives no shits. It winds them up hilariously.

She is also super hot and enormously successful, so they can't cancel her. Sad times.

Like Her Amazingness JKR they really can't handle it when a successful female won't drink the koolaid and surrender to their doctrine!!

Exactly. Liberals have "owned" Hollywood for so long that they are stunned that an actress won't toe the line.

SS is forging a path for others in the entertainment industry to not be cowed into supporting whatever cause is popular this month.

Charabanc · 02/08/2025 10:08

And another one. Why are so many people on this thread judging someone for learning something new?

fair play - sorry x

Sally690 · 02/08/2025 16:59

I can't get upset over the play on words between genes and jeans.

I thought the issue was that the camera in one add goes down to her cleavage and stops there and then she says something like 'eyes back up here'. I assumed it was because it was just a bit dated and ick.

Guess not. I think she's beautiful though.

Snorlaxo · 02/08/2025 17:59

I meant that AE and SS have tricked Democrats into doing the marketing for them by talking about the campaign and creating awareness.
I can’t think of a British equivalent but some brands like the notoriety of people saying “should be banned” or discussing it on SM. For example the Robinson squash one where the child is sent home from school for bad behaviour and the mother and child laugh about it over a glass of squash at home. I’ve seen more than one person suggest it’s anti-school/anti-teacher/pro permissive parenting.

Thulpelly · 02/08/2025 18:31

LadyCankleOfGrantham · 02/08/2025 07:57

She explains what genes are then the voiceover says she has great jeans because it’s a play on words.

If you think it has racist undertones or talks about eugenics you’re teaching so far you’ll pull a muscle in your arm.

So she doesn’t talk a it good genes at all

Obviously jeans/genes is the pun?

I don’t know what to say.. it’s literally the tagline of the ad? We just interpret it differently, clearly.

Thulpelly · 02/08/2025 19:18

I think you can put this ad in context of today’s America. Maybe it doesn’t hit the same way for british gen xers/boomers/elder millennials 😂

It doesn’t personally offend me even but the reason for the controversy is obvious… surely…
