Sydney Sweeney

I keep seeing posts on my SM about Sydney and the controversy behind her advertisement for some jeans. I’ve seen multiple posts about it being controversial but I can’t understand why, she’s got a low cut top on but I wouldn’t consider it low enough to cause the attention it’s getting. Please can someone tell me what I have missed?

If it is something really obvious and I’m being an idiot I promise I’m not being goady, I genuinely can’t figure it out.

OP posts:

No she doesn’t. Have you not seen the ad?

There is a voiceover at the end that says ‘sydney sweeney has great jeans’

after she’s spoken about genes passing down from parents

is this not the ad we’re talking about?

Mistyglade · 02/08/2025 02:00

Who actually said it? One person on Twitter probably. Its offence taken for the sake of it, like they have to find their daily dose and somehow it’s news.

I've just watched the advert, what are you talking about? She does have great jeans/genes. So because she's white it's wrong?

BusterGonad · 02/08/2025 02:06

beelegal · 31/07/2025 21:20

She hasn’t got pink or blue hair and she is not trans and she is not obese. That’s why she is controversial.

Yes, you've nailed it. She's not fat, she's not trans and she's a white woman so obviously we must get upset about it and say it isn't fair.

You’ve never heard of eugenics before?!

I was about to say have you been living under a rock ??

Crinkleybottomburger · 02/08/2025 02:52

I saw an interview where the guest said Sydney Sweeney’s initials are even wrong. Thankfully the interviewer called them out stating the reference to the SS is reaching and taking it too far.

Beeinalily · 02/08/2025 03:04

Oh my God, it's a pun. A joke. What the hell is happening to people?

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 02/08/2025 07:17

I think it’s because she’s white…we live in such weird times

MayaPinion · 02/08/2025 07:34

Tiredofme · 31/07/2025 22:58

I'd never heard of her so googled to see what she looks like.
I don't find her beautiful at all actually . A very unattractive mouth and quite weird looking.
I've not seen the advert but I do object to being " told" someone one is beautiful . It truly is in the eye of the beholder.
I think the genes/ jeans really does come over as promoting racial superiority.

Nobody cares what you think about her looks. Why would they?

OP, I’m a pretty woke lefty, and a psychologist to boot so I have some understanding of eugenics as part of my education, and I don’t get that angle at all. They could just as easily have put Beyoncé, or Priyanka Chopra, or literally any other attractive woman in that advert and nobody would have batted an eyelid (and they still could if they wanted to). As a PP has mentioned earlier, attractive women have been used to sell clothes for decades.

Tiredofme · 02/08/2025 07:47

@MayaPinion

There were plenty of other people commenting on her looks on this thread.
Are you going to be similarly rude to them and tell them nobody cares about their opinion?

SilenceOfTheTimTams · 02/08/2025 07:54

The sad truth is that the internet has allowed weirdos and fools to speak loudly. In the past we wouldn’t have heard from these people because they’re so inconsequential and their ‘issues’ are so trivial or contrived.

Woke concern is often just attention seeking bullshit. This Sydney Sweeney trousers thing is a good example.

She explains what genes are then the voiceover says she has great jeans because it’s a play on words.

If you think it has racist undertones or talks about eugenics you’re teaching so far you’ll pull a muscle in your arm.

So she doesn’t talk a it good genes at all

LadyCankleOfGrantham · 02/08/2025 07:59

PurpleChrayn · 01/08/2025 09:44

People are saying it’s Nazi. Which is ironic because there are people espousing ACTUAL Nazi ideologies that nobody seems too pressed about, such as telling Jews we need to wear yellow stars again and resurrecting old blood libels.

Well exactly. I’m finding on social media the same people whining about this are the same people using antisemitic tropes towards Israel. But yeah, a 27yo girl in a jeans as is the problem here

LadyCankleOfGrantham · 02/08/2025 08:02

Charabanc · 01/08/2025 18:14

Do try not to be insulting when someone is learning something new.

I honestly hate it when people pearl clutch because someone didn’t know something.

We only know things because someone told us. Nobody here was born knowing what eugenics are, hardly OP’s fault if nobody ever told her!

EachandEveryone · 02/08/2025 08:04

I’ve seen her in real life in the theatre sat in front of me. She’s one of the main characters in Euphoria so I did recognise her. She’s gorgeous in real life and tiny as they all are. Was just going about her business no one recognised her.

LadyCankleOfGrantham · 02/08/2025 08:08

@Thulpelly wouldn’t ir actually be racist to exclude a woman because shes white? Is there something wrong with being white?

summerskyblue · 02/08/2025 08:09

I thought the whole 'controversy' was bonkers.

There really are people who go through life looking for reasons to be offended.

In the end, the campaign and the product is just getting more attention than it would have had so the company must be pleased with the professionally offended taking them on.

I think there is so much more to be offended about in America at the moment than some silly advert...

Daffodilsarefading · 02/08/2025 08:10

I too think it’s a mountain out of a mole hill.
Makes a change from seeing the Kardashians or like posters have said, a blue haired, heavily tattooed trans person advertising women’s clothes.
Previously I had never heard of either SS or AE. I bet AE are delighted with the outrage.

PreciousTatas · 02/08/2025 08:12

What foolishness.

I think I have great genes too, does that mean I am endorsing eugenics or secretly hate all non black people?

No. It is just a beautiful young girl advertising jeans.

ILostMySharkPants · 02/08/2025 08:19

In the current climate in USA I’m sceptical that AE didn’t know exactly what they were doing. Knew that they’d face a reaction like this.

However in terms of marketing it’s been a great success - how many jeans ads make it all over the internet like these have?
I’d never heard of American Eagle before.

Arraminta · 02/08/2025 09:24

Teenytwo · 31/07/2025 21:17

I think I might have to blame baby brain because even with the explanations I don’t feel any wiser about it. She is beautiful, why is that controversial?

It's because we are no longer meant to laud, what used to be considered, conventional beauty e.g. healthy physique, facial symmetry, clear skin, good hair etc.

Arraminta · 02/08/2025 09:30

Lovely13 · 01/08/2025 21:11

Tis the dying larp of DEI thought speech. She’s pretty and white. How dare she be so! Haven’t bought denim in years or heard of the brand. But I am now tempted…

I'm buying some to help boost AE profits in the hope they will start running similar advertising campaigns.

Genes/jeans

Literal Nazis

Really?

And another one. Why are so many people on this thread judging someone for learning something new?
