Labour isn't working - Thread 5

TheNuthatch · 29/07/2025 14:33

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working!

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It was about this article for those who didn't see it. Another thread where posters excused the perps because 'white men rape too'.

Nigel Farage is set to announce another Conservative defection at 11am.
Any guesses who it might be?

Thank you @TheNuthatch. Yes, before I open the link I can make a decent stab of both the content and the response on MN that followed. It will be interesting to see who has defected.

Sounds like a name if it’s circulating, maybe I missed the pre run up before.

Some heavy deleting going on on here.

I'm keeping my powder dry for the sake of this thread, but you know my views from the rape gangs threads.

I haven't read or heard any rumours about the defector. No clue who it is.
Imagine the froth if it's Boris 😂

If it's Boris he should emerge out of a fridge, through a smoke machine to receive a turquoise rosette from Farage. We need something to lighten the mood 😁

Haha that would be amusing and get people going.

Yeah, the walls have eyes and all that. It's a sad state of affairs.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 04/08/2025 11:32

So PCC, Rupert Matthews. Honestly, I'll have to put my hand up and say I don't know much about him but 'an apocalyptic wasteland of lawless Britain,' absolutely describes my most local town. I'll only go under duress, during the day and never with the kids - our Labour led council is throwing our council tax at it to renew the place but I don't care how pretty it might become if it feels like I'm one misstep away from being mugged.

TheNuthatch · 04/08/2025 11:40

I have no idea who Rupert Matthews is, but Colin Sutton and Vanessa Frake are excellent appointments imo. Both highly credible and respected.
Interesting to see Reform go on law and order. There is definitely a space there for them as both main parties have failed on that front. It's also easy to tie in to immigration etc so I think it will work well for them.

Yes to your comment re councils phantom. We often get lovely award winning floral displays at roundabouts 🙄. Helpful.

EasternStandard · 04/08/2025 11:48

I hadn’t heard of them but good if they start getting sensible people.

Crime is up in London, particularly the stuff that impacts our daily lives. I’d like better than what Labour are offering us rn.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 04/08/2025 11:50

Yes, good to see experienced appointments, certainly established enough that they won't have to rewrite their cv's if they fall under scrutiny 😁

TheNuthatch · 04/08/2025 11:51

Can you hear the stampede of Labour supporters rushing to discredit Rupert Matthews? 😂

The fear is palpable. It must be exhausting.

Perhaps they are crossing their fingers in hopes that he gifted all his mates a handbag though expenses?

Vanessa Frake is deluded if she thinks men should be allowed in women's prisons on a 'case by case' basis. That is a complete vote loser for any woman who knows that sex is binary, immutable, and it matters.
Reform must do better than this on women's rights (though Labour are worse).

I’m sure they’re on it 😂

Labour are losing a lot of ground this summer aren’t they, even if they think they can fix things the delay is damaging them.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 04/08/2025 11:53

Oh no, that is disappointing.

Oh really? I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up. I hope she's changed her views as it won't tally with Reform voters.

It’s not about foreigners it’s about the fact so many migrants are coming in we don’t know who they are and this is what’s fanning the flames of racism when you have uneducated undocumented men what do you think will happen

The point I was making upthread about the comments re “foreigners” that I overheard is that this is becoming more than just anger about illegal immigrants. It is fuelling racism and xenophobia.

Yes I think that's true.
Just my opinion, but I think Labour are pushing more people in that direction by labelling anyone with concerns as far-right bandwagon jumpers, racists etc. It's infuriating. My main concern is an increased risk of VAWG.

I work with loads of foreign born colleagues, and we have employed many foreign born people over the years. It's very common in my industry. They all share my concerns too. In fact I would go further and say that my foreign born colleagues are even more annoyed at those who take the piss and abuse the system.

Anyway, trying to keep my powder dry.

I agree @TheNuthatch - I’ve had similar experiences too from colleagues, 700k people coming in when we have huge waiting lists, crumbling schools and no homes or good jobs for young people, if you dispassionately look at the numbers and graphs you can see why there is emotion around this.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 04/08/2025 12:37

Narratives about migrants have aways been weird, on the one hand they are the hard working, dedicated example to the natives about how to be aspirational or, they are spongers and deadbeats.

Both rely on reductive, stereotypical statements that achieves a particular ideological aim.

Neither should silence the reality of the mathematical problem of how to absorb the millions new migrants who have arrived over the last five years and will, year by year, become eligible for indefinite leave to remain and a host of benefits that can follow for those who are lower earners

And it absolutely should not silence a discussion about those migrant who come here and pose an increased threat of criminality and violence.

And I believe, it is that silencing and a refusal to take the bull by the horns, that is fuelling discord.

Arrearing50 · 04/08/2025 12:59

Agree - not to mention that current pattern of low global economic growth is increasing the returns to taking the risk to try and move to richer countries…this issue isn’t going away.
