Labour isn't working - Thread 5

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working!

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Morning all. It's supposed to be a scorcher of a day but I have woke up to Stephen King levels of mist, just waiting for the monsters.

50,000 small boat crossings is such a trope of Labour incompetence. Where's this gang-smashing elite team to protect the borders?

EasternStandard · 12/08/2025 08:48

Did anyone see that social media nonsense with four or so men taken in a van, jump shot to barbed wire and threatening you will not stay

Geez it took me longer to type that out than the impact of what was released. Everyone has seen straight through the ‘ground breaking’ ‘deal’.

Was that the one where they tried to ape the Trumpian ICE clips?

No, tell us more please. I saw the insta stuff last week with Starmer calling them illegal etc.

@ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera hope the mist lifts for you. Sounds eerie.

I just noticed a couple of men with blue bags being shown to a room, and barbed wire with the line taken from Howard over a decade ago (Aus PM).

‘If you arrive illegally you won’t get in’. Well that’s nonsense and the 1000 or so who have arrived since he declared it knows it’s kaput.

It was on the Telegraph app but probably long gone. Might be on Starmer’s IG but that’s a step too far for me 😬

I’ll see if it’s anywhere

Good. I hope they've got a big spade 😁.

I wish Kemi B would do more probing and attacking on education. She could run a mile with it, such an open goal. I have genuinely found out more from you twisty, despite me keeping up with the news re politics etc. I'm convinced that many parents are completely unaware of what Labour are doing in this area.

Me too but the latest poll showed that education doesn't even make Top 10 of voter concerns 😞 That's why.
I can't understand why, as a country, we don't care about education. It completely baffles me

Arrearing50 · 12/08/2025 09:14

I suspect it’s because it was in fact going quite well for many under the tories (not kids with SEN) - looking at the stats. They’ll be complaining more in a few years!

EasternStandard · 12/08/2025 09:22

It’s strange to see posts still rallying for Labour on here.

They need to go and make their own thread and accept that not everyone shares the same political views as them.

It's like I said on that other thread, it's almost cult like.

I'm surrounded by lefties, yet none of them support, or even like this government. It is a strange phenomenon on MN. They're getting angrier too.

For anyone wanting to sign, there is another petition calling for an immediate general election. Starmer is so low in the opinion polls so there is no way he will call one until he absolutely has to. But I think it’s good to let this shambles of a government know how much people are disappointed by them

Yes they are, much angrier and aggressive. Like the one yesterday who was reporting people left right and centre for absolutely nothing other than disagreeing with them.

TheNuthatch · 12/08/2025 09:28

Hell will freeze over before Starmer would call a GE. The only thing he truly cares about is power.

I think they want their left-wing echo chamber back.

I’m not surprised. I’d be embarrassed to admit to voting Labour.

One of my very liberal young adult dc recently asked me "Mum, were the last Labour government* *this bad?"

I found it quite poignant. Of course I answered "no".

I knew it would be bad. But I’m staggered at how bad it’s got so quickly.

That’s amazing. I suppose one silver lining, the only one, is that we won’t have to hear people rhapsodise over the earlier Labour gov. People will know the reality of the current one.

Absentmindedsmile · 12/08/2025 10:03

‘elite’

A word that can never be used to describe anything or anyone to do with this Labour government.

GasPanic · 12/08/2025 10:20

I'm trying to think what they have achieved. So far it just seems a mess.

i) Taxation. Record increases but they still screwed up as the audits are saying they are not going to meet the targets so leading to even higher taxation.

ii) Welfare. Screwed up the changes and had to roll back significant ones. Leading to a mess that ended up with the chancellor crying in parliament.

iii) Winter Fuel. Now they are trying to mitigate this and roll it back.

iv) Internet. Spectacularly useless changes which expose people to data fraud while allowing anyone who wants to circumvent easily with a VPN. Admittedly some of this was carry over policy from the Tories, but they had the change to review it.

v) 16 year olds the vote. Just basically gerrymandering.

vi) Stop the boats. Ripped up the Tory policys and implemented equally ineffectual ones of their own and achieved nothing in the process.

vii) House building. Have got nowhere near the targets they need so far and are pissing people off by giving build over permission to stuff like allotments.

viii) Chagos Islands. Now apparntly we are going to have to pay some massive multiple more than was originally estimated, in a time when we are screwed for cash.

ix) Overseas aid. They are taking a massive slice out of that to pay for weapons.

x) Over 70s sight tests. Sounds good on paper. but when you look at the stats poor eyesight is attributed to hardly any deaths. A lost opportunity to implement real policy that makes a difference, but a good extension to the culture wars against the elderly.

There is probably more stuff I have missed out. But they have been utterly rubbish. I'm not even going to go into their handling of the Israel situation.

One good thing. They have managed to negotiate a preferential trade deal with Trump. Which is probably more due to the fact Trump likes the UK rather than any great negotiating skills. Even this is not without controversey as it annoys a lot of their supporters quite a bit that the UK has actually got a better deal than the EU after Brexit.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 12/08/2025 10:21

It's definitely spikier out there and an unwillingness to talk about the issue at hand when it comes to the sheer ineptitude of this Labour government, preferring instead to accuse those who disagree of being a bot/Russian/ Farage/ far right/ a C2 or a DE - it's a lot broader now than Tory HQ at least 😁
