I was reading a book that said that the most succesful people get up at 5am.

What do you think. What time do you get up at?

My 2 year old wakes me up at 5:15am every morning. I can confirm my best ideas do not come at this time. Usually i am half asleep drinking a cup of tea trying to delay a game of hide and seek.

Bellie710 · 25/07/2025 19:22

I get up around 5/5.15 start work at 6.30. Not sure I would consider myself succesful though!

CowboyFromHell · 25/07/2025 19:24

I get a bit annoyed at these people who think being a morning person is inherently better and more likely to lead to success than being a night owl.

I’m most definitely more productive and creative later in the day - getting up at 5am to try and do things would be counterproductive for me. At work I notice there’s morning people who start off really strong and then peter off as the day progresses. I’m very much the opposite- it takes me a while to get going and I get more productive as the day goes on. Most days 4-6/7pm is my best time for getting things done.

Kjpt140v · 25/07/2025 19:51

Who wants to be a success.

fetchacloth · 25/07/2025 19:53

I'm a night owl and not by choice really 🙃. In my last job I had to be in before 8am which meant getting up at 6am 😩 jeez I couldn't do that now, 6am is the middle of the night to me. This meant that I had to be in bed by 11pm : wide awake 😐 . Then I'm not truly awake until about 10am.
After more than 40 years of working, I've calculated that my most productive hours are between 11am and 7pm, so that's what I'm aiming for in my next job. Yeah well, nice try 😏 but there must be other people out there similar to me, no?
Unfortunately there isn't much you can do to alter your natural body clock but for the record I do ensure I'm up between 7.30am and 8am each day 😎

ThatRoseBear · 25/07/2025 20:11

I have to get up at 5.30 for work Monday to Friday not by choice. Problem is that now my body clock thinks 7.30 is a lie in and on the weekend I physically can't sleep in!

capybaraforlife · 25/07/2025 20:15

My DH gets up at 445 yes 445. Gets straight into the pool to swim and is at his desk by 6 am. Does a load of work and leaves the house around 8-830. He runs his own business and it's the only time he gets to work on the business.

I'm up at 530 as I have a demanding job and need to leave the house at 7 to get DD to school.

It's a long day and I'm in bed by 9 pm each night but there is something magical about a beach run early morning....

Flumpflimpo · 23/07/2025 21:56

Haha . The book said that people get their best ideas at 5am

All I get at 5 am is existential dread.

Blipette · 25/07/2025 20:21

When am working am up at 2am 🥱

PurpleYarnivore · 25/07/2025 20:23

I set my alarm for 5 ( but after years I’m awake before it goes off ) I am a morning person and also I get some peace before I have to wake the kids at 7 when it’s then full on , I get lots done on my iPad while enjoying a couple of mugs of tea , my favourite time of the day. I am in bed at 9 tho .

I wouldn’t say I’m successful tho , it’s just the way I function as a morning person .

BookwormDadUK · 25/07/2025 20:28

I've been doing that - I tend to work 7-3 so I can spend time with my daughter. I've found it much easier to get going than when I'd get up later. My wife - exact opposite, she needs the longest possible lie followed by the swiftest wake-to-breakfast imaginable. I reckon we've all got our sweet spot and the 5am club came about because a few rich folk thought they were geniuses.

pollymere · 25/07/2025 21:05

Usually about 10am. I rarely go to bed before midnight however and the majority of my job is afternoon and evening.

Wheresthebuttons · 25/07/2025 21:11

I have to leave home at 5am to get to the airport for a flight next week, and totally dreading such an early start! I'm usually up by 8am on work in the office days, 8.45am when I work from home.

I'll see if I have any brilliant ideas in the taxi at 5am, but I'll probably be drooling a bit and panicking that I forgot to bring my passport with me.

HappiestSleeping · 25/07/2025 21:28

@Flumpflimpo here is an interesting thought for you. I am a scuba diver, and would get up at stupid o-clock in order to catch the tides.

I met my wife at the scuba club. Marrying her makes me the most successful man I know.

I know it depends on how one defines success, but that is it for me.

Backtoschoolblues · 25/07/2025 21:28

I think you need a reason for getting up at 5am. Educational/ inspirational podcast, exercise, plan and prep all meals for the day. I'm not sure just getting up at 5am makes you successful. There's a book. 5am Club I think it is. I might get up at 5am and read it. At the very least I will be successful at finishing a book.

SaywhatIthink · 25/07/2025 21:42

9.30am is an early start for me.
Normal time to role out of bed is around 10am sometimes later much later.

Makingmusicinmy50s · 25/07/2025 22:16

On my work days my alarm goes off at 5am, I turn the TV on in bed and watch the BBC news for half an hour before getting up. I use the hour and a half before leaving the house at 7, for putting a wash on, choose something from the freezer to leave out dinner, feed and groom the cats, general tidy up if not done the night before, shower, make up, iron work clothes, or in the summer, do some gardening. I must say it does feel good doing 'stuff' before going to work. But, on non work days I can happily sleep until 10 am, and even then, on a cold winter rainy day, I might stay in bed watching a film until noon. I love my bed! Not successful by the way. 😬

Brightasarainbow · 23/07/2025 22:12

Mistaking correlation for causation.

Margaret Thatcher used to sleep 4 hours per night. Does that mean if I start to sleep four hours I'm more likely to become Prime Minister? No, because I would be a sleep-deprived mess with no critical thinking skills.

It's not too far a stretch that people with less sleep needs naturally, can use those extra hours to gain a business advantage.

No but if someone slept four hours a night like MT it might cause someone to make stupid decisions loke she did!

themagicnumberthree · 26/07/2025 11:15

I'd rather get things like the housework done, clothes and bags ready before bed so morning me wakes up to a tidier house and has less to do. I couldn't do this if I was going to bed at 9pm

TrtseHkpr · 26/07/2025 12:22

I get up just after 5am, I'm completely brain dead at that time and have no thoughts apart from making it to the end of my working day 🤣

mamaduckbone · 26/07/2025 12:26

When the dcs were little I was regularly up at 5am on account of being rudely woken up by them. I can categorically say I was not more inspired and brilliant as a result. Give me an 8am start any day, and I'll be brilliant at about 11pm. Love the idea of being an early riser, but I just feel like a corpse.

Cherryicecreamx · 26/07/2025 12:31

I did try the 5am thing. I read a book also and kept seeing it being flaunted about. My entire social life became non existent. I felt I was falling asleep at dinner time and if anyone invited me out it had to be a no otherwise it would mess up my precious 5am routine.
All I discovered was what I would do in the evening/ at night, I would be doing in the early hours instead. It didn't seem worth it when I felt I was missing out on things to go to bed extra early.

Veryvulture · 26/07/2025 12:57

I get up at 6/7am, my alarm is set for 7 but I’m usually awake sometime after 6!
Went through a spell of getting up at 5, it is lovely to go outside and the world is so quiet, sun rising, that part I love, but I am way more productive and in a better head space with more sleep.

FullOfMomsense · 26/07/2025 14:12

5am, bread dough rising and yoga commencing. It is life changing. I'm busy, if I wake early I have more me time
