5am start

I was reading a book that said that the most succesful people get up at 5am.

What do you think. What time do you get up at?

I do get my best ideas at 5:00 am!

The best idea at that time is to resume sleeping and be completely refreshed ready for work at 7:30 am.

Hotandbotheredflower · 24/07/2025 07:09

What time do these people go to bed. I currently go to bed 9-10pm and wake up 7am. I would have to be going to bed 7-8pm to wake up at 5am 😂

The early bird gets the worm

A few years ago I got into the habit of getting up at 5am for a while...the flipside of it was being asleep by 10pm, which was fine by me but would bother some people. I also slept with bedroom curtains open (lived somewhere not overlooked) and it was summer, so I think the light helped get me into the rhythm.

I am definitely someone who has more focus in the mornings, generally that's the best time for me to get stuff done, absolutely useless in the afternoons.

Absolutely this. I get up at 5am to walk the dog before work, it hasn’t made me the slightest bit more successful.

I wouldn't be able to function if I got up at 5am! I can barely function if I get up at 6am

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 24/07/2025 07:10

I get up at 5am in the school holidays in order to get 2 hours work in, empty the dishwasher and fold some laundry before the kids get up.
It's 7am and I am knackered.

Mikart · 24/07/2025 07:19

I get up at 5am. I can get a lot done! But am in bed before 9.

TheAmusedQuail · 24/07/2025 07:20

I do have my best and most productive time of the day within 3 or 4 hours of waking up. But as someone that works online, I get up at 5.45am and start work at 6am and I'm DEFINITELY not at my best at 6am. I'd say I'm sharpish by 7.30 (after working for an hour and a half LOL).

I wake up at 5.30am and usually go to bed around 11pm. I'm not sure most people need 9-10 hours of sleep like you're getting.

whowhatwhen · 24/07/2025 07:21

I get up at 5 because otherwise I don't have any time for me or all the other shit that needs doing. I work out, walk the dog, do some yoga, mindfulness, tidy, make packed lunches etc - it does help me set up for the day, by the time I start work I'm as zen as I can be and have done something for me.

It gives me more headspace and I feel more balanced and less rushed and I'm deffo better off at balancing work and life as a result of it.

I’m definitely not having any creative ideas, that’s for sure. It does take a toll, for me at least, but I am not someone who can function on 4 hours sleep a night.

Also the people I meet walking their dogs at that time are lovely but none would be considered successful in the sense you probably mean. So 5am start, in and of itself, does not appear to be life changing.

burgundybirdie · 24/07/2025 07:24

I'm up between 4 and 5am every day. All I've achieved from it is being exhausted all the time and having a near constant headache, wouldn't recommend.

Tooty78 · 23/07/2025 22:10

In the summer it's the best time of day for dressing gown gardening!

Definitely this! Although I don’t get the lawn mower out, the grass cuttings ruin my slippers.

DisruptiveCumin · 24/07/2025 07:27

If someone gets up at 5am it only means they go to bed at about 9pm, which isn't possible for many of us due to our jobs and schedules of the world around us. As an early riser myself I really like getting up early, working out or reading when it's still quiet, sometimes I might go for a walk with my camera to take a couple of morning photos and make cute smartshow 3d videos with them, etc. Early hours just have their own peace. However, this might not be a sustainable lifestyle for someone who works late hours and having a good sleep schedule is way more important than getting up at 5am because someone told you it's a definition of success. Starting your day at some particular time doesn't equal success, but starting your day well rested surely does.

99bottlesofkombucha · 24/07/2025 07:28

Nope. I’m a night owl and we can be successful too :)

Hedonism · 24/07/2025 07:29

How are we defining "successful" here?

WaltzingWaters · 24/07/2025 07:32

Far too early. 7am for me (or very slightly earlier if toddler is up earlier). 6-6:15 twice a week when I go swimming. 5am is middle of the night still.

pollyglot · 24/07/2025 07:32

Always been a lark. Bed at 9, up at 5. I love being up before dawn, or in the early morning light. It's then that I sit down to write, three hours with two cups of tea and a coffee. Very productive time, clear thinking, words come so easily.

CoralOP · 24/07/2025 07:33

I believe the logic behind it is building discipline rather than something magical happening at 5am.
If you say you're getting up at 5am (which is hard for a lot of people ) and you do it then you are keeping promises to yourself and building the discipline you need to take into other areas of your life.

I don't sleep well so I've gave up trying to wake up early if I don't have to.

Cavello · 24/07/2025 07:36

John Grisham famously said that when he was working as a lawyer he would get up at 5am to do some writing for his first book A Time To Kill before the working day began.

A combination of bringing up kids and peri-menopause means I am often up around 5am, the only thing I'm successful at is drinking 2 cups of coffee whilst scrolling the Internet. That being said I do enjoy sitting next to the open window listening to the birds and smelling the fresh air with a quiet house.

Go for it OP and come back and let us know how you get on.

Strumpetpumpet · 24/07/2025 07:37

Well I’m normally up by then but that’s because I suffer from insomnia and don’t usually get more than 4-5 hours a night. I am permanently exhausted and get a lot of headaches. I wouldn’t recommend it!

WalkingWavy · 24/07/2025 07:44

I get up at 5am. Personally I’ve always naturally been a morning person, I usually always wake up before my alarm and I spring out of bed. I don’t think it makes me a better/more successful person. Sometimes I envy people who can stay up late. However I wouldn’t change it, I usually get out and do my exercise first thing or potter about tidying and getting ready for the day. Personally I think it’s the best part of the day and I wouldn’t change it. But I’m not self righteous about it, I do think it’s innate to either be a morning person or a night owl. Neither is better, just what suits you

herbalteabag · 24/07/2025 07:48

I often get up at 6 and that's bad enough. Definitely don't get any ideas, just walk around in a hazy fog for an hour or two.
I'd get up at about 8.30 every day if I had the choice.

Me too.

gracewitt · 24/07/2025 07:51

Noooo! If 5am is going to be a good time for you to get up you'd have already worked this out for yourself. Its more important to have a regular pattern for sleep.
