I was reading a book that said that the most succesful people get up at 5am.

What do you think. What time do you get up at?

It’s competitive early rising which seems to have come out of America. It’s going to depend. Can you consistently go to sleep at 8/9pm without it impacting anyone ? If so then crack on. Wouldn’t work for me as I have kids who do extra curriculars and chores that need doing before bed.

By almost all metrics I could be considered ‘successful’
I never see 5am unless I’m on my way to catch a flight OR I’m still up following on from partying the night before (probably 2-3 times a year)
I think the book is rubbish.

Try reading the book - success is different for everyone. I have read the book, have been getting up at 5am for years for an hour to myself before my hectic day starts and use the time for life admin, a quiet coffee (or three to myself) and contemplation, some Pilates (because my old joints don’t work without it) and reflection. Sometimes I use the time to prepare dinner in advance, to pop to the shop for something I need for the day that have forgotten about, to sort some washing etc. I love my time alone doing whatever I want to do because so much of my life is dictated to by other people or things - and this in turn allows me to be successful in many areas of my life 😃

By "people", they usually mean "men" with this kind of time management bollocks.

The early bird gets the worm

But the second mouse gets the cheese.

Flumpflimpo · 24/07/2025 08:04

Well i tried it today!
I set my alarm for 5am. The alarm went off thos morning. While still half asleep, my hand hit snooze, and i went back to sleep and woke up at 7.

Ah well. Maybe i will try 6am tomorrow to train my body into an earlier start

If you wake up at 5 fresh and we'll rested by 5.30-6.00 you can think very assertively. If you wake up at 5 un rested and tired, forcing yourself to wake up at 5 because it is in a book you won't be able to other than grunt for a while.

Zanatdy · 24/07/2025 08:06

5am - but not out of choice, peri related I think. Not sure i’d class myself as majorly successful, but I don’t do badly.

Rainonwednesday · 24/07/2025 08:06

I wake between 6 and 6.30. I do not want to get up earlier as I’d have to go to bed earlier, as I go to bed early as it is.

Mistaking correlation for causation.

Margaret Thatcher used to sleep 4 hours per night. Does that mean if I start to sleep four hours I'm more likely to become Prime Minister? No, because I would be a sleep-deprived mess with no critical thinking skills.

It's not too far a stretch that people with less sleep needs naturally, can use those extra hours to gain a business advantage.

Margaret Thatcher ended up with Alzheimers. Lack of quality sleep is a risk factor.

WhatTheFridge · 24/07/2025 08:10

I’m 515am if that counts? Not sure about successful, but I’m far healthier and fitter than I was when I got up later (I use the extra couple of hours for a morning swim and long dog walk)

ThatCyanCat · 24/07/2025 08:10

JK Rowling is a self confessed night owl.

reyann · 24/07/2025 08:20

I guess it depends on what you spend your time doing at 5am and also if you are able to sleep early so that you wake up able to make the most of it? Otherwise it’s a waste of time.

MyAcornWood · 24/07/2025 08:27

Usually around 7:30, if the smalls are cooperating. This morning it was rather earlier as my 4mo has heard all about that sleep regression thing and has decided to give it a good go 😅
5am would never be my preference, clearly I am never destined for great things!

Doggymummar · 24/07/2025 08:30

I'm up at 5 in the summer. I'm unemployed as of next week. Not successful at all

Boxplots · 24/07/2025 08:31

5am but only because my sleep is terrible so im invariably awake anyway! If I have to be somewhere though I do like to get up and do some exercise before my morning shower and relax a bit before the mayhem of the day.

Larooba · 24/07/2025 08:32

Ds does this at uni. 5am start. He says he is sharper first thing in the morning, he does uni work before his first lecture which would be 9am at the earliest. He spends the evenings chilling with mates and gaming (plays e sports for the uni) because he says his brain has switched off so why do your important uni work when you are tired?

I am definitely a morning person and could do 5am.

yogpot · 24/07/2025 08:41

I get up at 5am frequently (insomnia, work. and now a toddler) and I can tell you all my ideas are shit, and I am not successful, and I look like a leather bag.

Newmumburnout · 24/07/2025 08:53

I read a different book that says the opposite. That the right amount of sleep and at the right time plays a big factor and health, brain function etc and that people who get up super early miss out on vital REM.🤷‍♀️

SirChenjins · 24/07/2025 08:57

I often wake up at 5am - but that's due to perimenopausal insomnia. I do have some pretty amazing ideas about what I'd do if I ruled the world - usually involving getting rid of anyone who's an idiot or who I don't like, or planning my retirement - but I can't say it's made me more successful. I lie in bed dozing until 6am when I get up for work.

noramoo · 24/07/2025 09:54

My 15 month old has clearly read this book 😜

Hotandbotheredflower · 24/07/2025 07:09

What time do these people go to bed. I currently go to bed 9-10pm and wake up 7am. I would have to be going to bed 7-8pm to wake up at 5am 😂

I go to bed at 10 to get up at 5. I like to go for a walk before work to clear my head - it makes me feel calmer but doesn't make me successful.

I’ve also just realised that Margaret Thatcher was 53 years old when she became PM.

I am the same age and due to menopause my sleep is horrendous, I wonder if this was actually the reason why Margaret Thatcher had so little sleep!!

PassingStranger · 24/07/2025 21:06

My friend is in bed for 10 to 10.30 and up every.morning at 5.

Toohot2trot · 25/07/2025 17:57

boddtm · 23/07/2025 21:56

5am. I can debunk that theory.

Same 😴

Toohot2trot · 25/07/2025 18:02

I get up at 5am every morning, go to my first job, get back home around 7am, have breakfast, get changed and go to work, If I was successful, I wouldnt have to work 2 jobs
