Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

You sound like his ex 😂

Nope. Just had the misfortune of sitting next to him on a flight home from London. It all started when we were last to board, almost late and he realised he no longer had a row of seats to himself.

I came across him with his wife in Burlington Arcade in Mayfair last year. I was with my seven and five year old who were excited to see the oompah loompah from the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. He was very grumpy and declined to say hello.

How mean of him. It’s all very well for people to say he is off duty but if I met colleagues in the street, I would still say hello and smile.

Plus, I paid an invoice of his and he never offered to pay me back despite having £millions.

Not impressed.

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. Meeting a colleague in the street is one person, that you already know. Quick chat, get back to your day.

if every stranger on the street wanted to say hello, chat about your work, same conversation every time, then take a selfie, you’d have had enough by the third person. Once you start you could be stuck there hours with a queue of people wanting to stop and say hello. No chance of getting to primark to pick up that pair of socks you need 🤣

Not every stranger wants to say hello to Mr Grant.

Plus, he has made a lot of dosh from his films and if he then ignores his fans, especially children, it’s poor form.

We were on holiday in the same hotel as David Beckham when he was training with the England Team. No paparazzi but I never saw him refuse a single photograph and he was lovely with children. On our last day, a youngster asked him for his shirt and he took it off and gave it her.

What did he do?
Is that why he always plays a baddie?

Yes - Prunella Scales. Sat opposite her at a friend's wedding and next to her husband Jeremy West. Both utterly uninterested in me or any other civilian. Moaned to each other about the food, looked down her nose at anyone trying to start conversation, but lit up as soon as another famous actor appeared.

I will have to google her husband’s name but it wasn’t Jeremy

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 10/01/2026 09:09

Timothy West

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 10/01/2026 09:18

There’s a quote that goes something like “ Be nice to those you meet on your way up as you never know who you might need on your way down”.

It would be interesting to one how long ago the pps experience of the Wests was, wouldn't it? Particularly given how long Prunella had significant dementia for.

passed him in street and he made a derogatory sign and said something nasty which I didn't catch.. only an arsehole does that to complete strangers! probably thinks he's God's gift to women 🙄 pillock

Agreed. Prunella Scales was married to Timothy West.

And tbh, I'm not sure why you'd hold two actors to any higher standards than anyone else. Maybe the food was awful. Maybe they were like a disproportionate number of Mners, who apparently hate weddings and making chitchat with strangers at them.

Squirrel60 · 10/01/2026 15:56

I've read over the years that Wendy Richard was an old cow that nobody liked, and she was difficult to work with!

As well as playing a shop girl in AYBS, she was an actual shop girl and was sacked multiple times from her jobs because she was a nasty bit of work to the customers!

WeakenFromWith · 18/01/2026 21:16

Amanda Owen, The Yorkshire Shepherdess.

Awful, demanding woman.

I heard Wendy Richard on acDesert Island Discs rerun this week end, and she came across as extremely prickly.

Weddings are hellish when you're seated next to strangers. Well, I hate it, and I am simply adorable. All 'how do you know Susan/Jeffrey?' 'what do you do for a living?' 'I like your handbag'. We both know my handbag is a piece of shit, I don't do anything interesting, and my DH works with Susan in a job too dull to discuss and doesn't really know why we were invited. I bet old Pru and Tim had more than their fair share of enforced socialising with people they were never going to see again.
