Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Is there anyone from oxford that isnt a posh twat though.

I just went to a group that was full of people from oxford. Christ they were all posh twats.

Well me and all my friends. Emma was raised posh and privileged, I was not but from the same area. Met in friendship circles.. she just speaks to people like they are inferior

What was she like growing up?

Clearly smart but would talk to people like she was better than them, no matter who it was. Always sneering at something. She was no innocent angel that's for sure

@Mummyneedsacoffee i wonder if we were at the same conventions - were you going back in the early 2000’s? Sean Harry I think was the name of the guy who organised a lot of them. Clare was really lovely - I remember she was cuddling my eldest son as he was only about 6 weeks old at a convention she was at and she was telling us she’d look after him whilst we went and got all of the autographs lol.

Tom didn’t stand out either way to me, but Adam Busch was the sweetest guy ever - the autograph he signed smudged a tiny bit and even though I said it was fine, he jumped up and went to the desk where you paid and grabbed me a new photo then sighed with a different pen, adding “2nd time lucky” to it.

omg how have I only just remember Jonathan Woodward - he heard my husband comment it was my birthday and signed it happy birthday and drew me birthday cakes! He was so nice!

I miss those conventions…

Yes! Defo the same ones then!

Starfury. Met so many wonderful people!!

I haven't either, but Ruth Jones is lovely and she seems to like him so he must have something positive about him.

Yes that’s always puzzling isn’t it? Julie Walter’s is universally popular and she adored Victoria Wood, who seems to have been a bit stand-offish. And I’m sad to hear that Vic Reeves is not very nice - Bob M seems well-liked.

All these people can be nice to colleagues and fellow celebrities, I guess!

Pudmyboy · 23/07/2025 21:23

Chris Packham is an absolute sex pest @Pebbles16 wow I am surprised at this as I thought his autism meant he was uncomfortable around people, from watching his documentary!

Kate Adie was nice when I met her would have been around 2000 I think. She’d actually got a stall at a v posh annual car boot style event for her village in Rutland. Those who lived in the village put a table out and sold their unwanted tat, it ran for years and there was always excellent stuff on offer. I’d seen a framed print I wanted on her stall and DH as usual had wandered off and I’d got no cash. She seemed familiar to me and I thought she must be someone I’d worked with, I was gabbling away to her thinking I’d remember where I knew her from at any minute and she was nodding and smiling away at me. Anyway, found DH got some cash went back and bought a print from her for £15 which she thanked me for and assured me it was a good buy. It’s still on my wall. To my shame it was DH who pointed out it was Kate Adie as I walked away, chuffed to bits with my bargain print. I still had no idea.

Princess Anne was absolutely fab when I met her. She was lovely to my 8 year old DD - really engaged and took her seriously. My DM spent a morning with her for a royal visit and lunch and said she was a dream - knew everything about the project, knew the people involved, remembered people she’d met a couple of year previously. DM said on her own she was really friendly and chatty and they had a moment roaring with laughter over a private joke. Nothing bad to say about her - that day she made absolutely everyone she encountered feel special.

Another shoutout for P Anne from me. I met her through work and she was totally down to earth, really well informed and very chatty with everyone. She just gets on with it and works hard.

See, I'm not in the least bit surprised that Steve Coogan was like that. I've always got a bad vibe from him.
The few famous people I've met have pretty much been as you'd expect (example: John Humphrys is grouchy, rude, deliberately argumentative for no reason).

Yeah. Humphreys not a nice man IME ,but not entirely a surprise!

Coffeeishot · 23/07/2025 21:59

I met Princess Anne when i was a late teenager, i have a disability and i was involved with riding for the disabled (she was patron)and i had to do a demo.representing our club, anyway she was really lovely and she chatted for a while, i suppose because it was horsey she was interested, but I really liked her.

Am I the only person on MN who has never met a famous person? I've seen a few in the distance and I've known a couple of people before they were famous but I've never spoken to anyone with active celebrity status, not even z-list.

Same here! Apart from the famous people in bands that I've seen over the years (and I don't think that counts!) I've never actually met,or spoken to,or got near to a famous person. Apart from Paul Daniels, many years ago,who I glimpsed getting into his posh car outside McDonald's in Uxbridge. 😂

My daughter was an embroidery designer for some of her outfits and met her several times. She said she was lovely, very humble and happy to chat to everyone.

I've never met him, but I really liked David Mitchell until I read his autobiography. Very superior and up himself.

Agreed: I always read these kind of threads with one eye closed just in case anybody says anything bad about Michael Palin, because I think that would break my heart.

Met him and Terry Jones when I was a teenager (and they were at the height of Python fame) . They absolutely charmed me and my mate - ah, sweet memory that ☺️

I find him slightly creepy and self obsessed.

I live on Rutland, where is this posh car boot? They have one on the showground every Saturday in the summer but it's not posh so it can't be that one.

It used to be in Exton on the whitsun bank holiday weekend but it hasn’t run for years. Used to love going, very pretty village. If it’s back on give me shout, I’m in.

I know someone who did a stint in royal protection whilst in the military, who said exactly the same, about fifteen years ago so well before the Meghan saga started up. He used to swear at the mention of Harry’s name 😆 On the other hand he absolutely revered Princess Diana and wouldn’t hear a word said against her.
