Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

The only celeb I’ve met was Kat Slater from Eastenders… It was Disneyland and she was behind me in a queue. I was a child. I appreciate she was with her children, but she behaved as though I had COVID.
I was a teenager on a school trip to Disneyland. All I said was hello.

I had the complete opposite with her in a supermaket check out years back. I had a screaming baby and bored toddler while trying to pack my shopping and she was behind me in the queue and helped me pack my shopping !

I think the impressions we get from fleeting meetings with these people means absolutely
nothing. Many talented people are shy and can come across as cold or aloof. As for celebs who sign autographs for hours etc they may see this as a business move and may start cussing fans as soon as it is over. We can have no idea whatsoever what these people are like from chance encounters.

I do like hearing these stories however.

I’ve changed my view of Dame Judi Dench, since she was a bitch to me in my dream 🫣😉

I agree, but I do think that the way people deal with situations when they're under pressure tells you something about them.

I know that Joe Public can be a horror, so I sympathise with people who are ambushed by insensitive idiots brandishing pens. (If anyone can even explain to me what the point of an autograph is anyway, I'd be fascinated - it just seems meaningless to me, but hey...)

I remember seeing Judi Dench absolutey mobbed by kids and pushy adults all shoving pens at her. Lovely as she is (and by all accounts, she really is) she stopped, looked very stern and put on her Lady Bracknell voice and said "If you're going to behave like that I won't sign any of them!'.

And I don't blame her!

I'm probably going to dream of Bill Clinton now😉

I had a colleague who worked on a project with Clinton and said exactly the same - unbelievably charming and charismatic, does that thing of laser focussing on whoever he’s talking to and making them feel like the most important person in the room. She was a totally unflappable businesswoman, very professional and highly qualified in her field, but she was like a giddy teenager with mentionitis over ‘Bill’. 100% would have knobbed him given the opportunity 😂

I'm so glad to read this.
I have a longstanding crush on Billy Clinton and a long-standing envy of Monica Lewinsky. The man just radiates with charisma.

I once saw a quite well known actress at a farmer’s market with her family one Sunday. She was just strolling around and everyone got their cameras out and started taking pictures/photos, following her around. She seemed to take in her stride and just got on with her browsing. I would hate that. She is quite beautiful so perhaps she has been used to the attention since birth.

PopeJoan2 · 25/07/2025 10:28

I saw Sienna Miller out once. I don’t know how nice she is but she was exquisitely beautiful. Years ago I met Tamsin Outhwaite - she was incredibly beautiful too. Especially when she smiled, which was often. She was really lovely. Especially to the youngsters I had with me. She gave the impression of enjoying being famous but also being down to earth and friendly. I hope she hadn’t changed.

What an absolute legend that woman is. The show she did with Maggie Smith, Joan Bakewell and Eileen Atkins all sat round a table gabbing and happily bitching at one another is well worth a watch.

Sienna Miller does seem like something of a freak of nature! 🤩🤩🤩💗

I agree! Judi Dench finds farts extremely amusing and always has a story involving them!

I think she’s very special - a supremely talented person who is also an amazing human being.

I loved this it was repeated when Maggie Smith died so i watched it again. They are all such "luvvies" total legends all of them.

I've tried to observe Judi Dench's interactions with all kinds of people (on the telly, obvs) and she is mesmerising. She immediately establishes a rapport with people of all backgrounds and ages, and has them giggling with her. She basically treats everyone the same, isn't put off by 'important' people, has a very childish, lavatorial sense of humour and a completely open mind. I just wish I was like that!

Then, in an instant, she'll switch (say, on Graham Norton) and recite a Shakespearian sonnet and you won't hear a pin drop.

My mum met Queen Camilla and thought she was rude

Can you say more? I'm interested because I know a few people who've met her and even worked with her, and they all think she's lovely - very down to earth and treats everyone the same. She's basically a shy, private woman who's now in the public eye massively, so not an easy role.
I'd be really interested, though, to hear what she did or said that was rude! (I'm just an old gossip...)

Oh Flumpflimpo...please explain! I want to know!

It's very teasing to put something like that without explaining.

Not Joan Bakewell, Joan Plowright, a very fine actor and also Laurence Olivier's widow. They were all Dames, weren't they? Terrific watching!

I love the way she says, “How rude!” with a twinkle in her eye when someone teases her…and then comes the filthy laugh.

I think she’s wonderful.

Yes, it’s called There’s Nothing Like a Dame and it’s a hoot.
i wouldn’t pick a quarrel with any of them mind Grin

I wonder how Dame Judi feels about Jay Blades now. They did a very sweet tv show together before his fall from grace and seemed to really touch each other.

Someone mentioned Michael Rosen. He's great! I've met him a few times at education events and he's so ordinary and yet genius and genuinely friendly and interested in talking to people. Exactly how he seems on his Word of Mouth programme on radio 4.

Thank god for small mercies. I love Michael Rosen.

Yes sorry your right.
I was so intent on not mistaking Eileen Atkins with Harriet Walter (something I do all the time) that I got the wrong Joan 🤦.

I know someone who did a stint in royal protection whilst in the military, who said exactly the same, about fifteen years ago so well before the Meghan saga started up. He used to swear at the mention of Harry’s name 😆 On the other hand he absolutely revered Princess Diana and wouldn’t hear a word said against her.

Edited

Who, your friend or Harry?
