I'm going to the fish and chips shop. What will you have?

So much choice today but I'll keep it simple and traditional: fish, chips, scraps, salt and vinegar. There's two shops I frequent - never known if it's cod or haddock.

This thread really shows where everyone is from 😂

We usually get a fish supper, single battered sausage, single battered white pudding, mushy peas (a bit rogue in Scotland!), a curry sauce and a coleslaw. And share between us. With a full fat coke or, even better, a pint of lager! Kids like scampi and chips. I'm from a mostly English family and when we we visit English family, scraps and pies are the best bit 👌🏻

donaldtrumponlyhasonedancemove · 04/07/2025 22:46

Anything as long as it comes with Edinburgh chippy sauce

WillimNot · 04/07/2025 22:49

Medium cod and chips please, salt and vinegar (preferably onion)
Cheers!

Although if you're in a Scottish chippy I'd love a battered haggis please with chips instead

One Christmas one of the local chippies was advertising battered mince pies. 😂

Quite a few round us did that it was really nice to be fair

My chippy does battered mushrooms, battered pineapple, battered haggis & battered Mars bars. Can you guess which country I'm yet? 😏 (no scaps though & rhe chips aren't a patch on my childhood chippy)

Ours does battered mars bar, twix and oreos

Scottish chippers definitely along with white pudding and red pudding.
White pudding supper is really filling.

Red pudding is usually just in the east though. My Dundee born and bred ex was rather upset when visiting my family in Glasgow and the chippy owner looked at him like he had two heads when he asked for a red pudding. 🤣

alexalisten · 04/07/2025 23:06

One of our local chip shops does battered pizza 🍕 😋

Tarkan · 04/07/2025 23:06

If you ever find a battered Crunchie then that’s a hell of an experience. The honeycomb goes molten then solidifies on your teeth when you bite it. 😁

TheTecknician · 04/07/2025 23:07

I don't suppose there are that many foods that can't be battered and deep fried. Big field mushrooms, bacon chops, chicken kiev, hash browns and so on.

I’m from Glasgow but live in Angus now, definitely something I’ve only seen over here and as I say the chippy we went to had never even heard of it. So many people think it’s just a sausage when it’s not either, at least most people know what black and white puddings are!

Funny how there are little regional differences like that. A good friend of mine was brought up in Lothian so we always have a salt and vinegar versus salt and sauce disagreement as to what’s best. 🤣

Shivvy1 · 05/07/2025 00:32

Battered chicken fillet burger with bacon, grated cheese, mayo, lettuce and red onion and chips with plenty of salt and vinegar and brown sauce 😋

Kimwestonhelpless · 05/07/2025 00:41

The chipper will be closed by now 🤣🤣

CookingFatCat · 05/07/2025 00:56

Just the best scallop ever fried please ‘

Masala fish in naan, mushy peas and a potato scallop from our closest chip shop. Orange chips if I head across the city.

Envy There was a chip shop near me with an Indian British fusion menu and they did amazing things like a mixed box of masala fish pieces, samosas, chips, salad and raita that was the best thing ever but sadly they closed down Sad

Chippy near me has just started offering this.

Scallop, a few chips and a bit of curry sauce or mushy peas. I saw the triple, or quadruple if you count the batter, and thought of MN.

When did curry sauce become a thing with f&c? I know it's popular but I wouldn't want to try it. My Mum used to have mushy peas and tomato ketchup, which I also couldn't abide. And I'm not being a food snob, I've just got more traditional tastes.

My 'go to' chippies are The Little Fisherman and Gay Lane Fisheries.

Very approx around the late ‘80’s/early 90’s (though it could have been a lot earlier in big cities), Chinese takeaways started to appear. I suspect they soon realised that “little Englander” might have a family where one “didn’t like Chinese”, so they offered fish and chips at the bottom of the menu. Ditto Indian takeaways.

I imagine a few would order chips, instead of rice/noodles. That’s my theory, anyway.

Westfacing · 05/07/2025 06:57

That battered scallop does not look like a scallop as in shellfish, I think it's potato?
