I'm going to the fish and chips shop. What will you have?

So much choice today but I'll keep it simple and traditional: fish, chips, scraps, salt and vinegar. There's two shops I frequent - never known if it's cod or haddock.

Sorry, chippy sauce as served only on the east coast of Scotland. It’s a bit like brown sauce with extra vinegar. Incredibly hard to describe and people either love it or hate it.
its definitely more common than a deep fried Mars bar, which is mainly just a tourist thing.

Fish supper, salt and sauce. Embra chippy sauce.

Yes. I discovered this when I moved to 'Embra'. Nothing like it!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 04/07/2025 21:41

White pudding supper with chippy sauce

When did curry sauce become a thing with f&c? I know it's popular but I wouldn't want to try it. My Mum used to have mushy peas and tomato ketchup, which I also couldn't abide. And I'm not being a food snob, I've just got more traditional tastes.

My 'go to' chippies are The Little Fisherman and Gay Lane Fisheries.

I know the Gay Lane Fisheries and curry sauce has been a thing in fish and chip shops in the area for at least 40 years.

I'll have fish (no need to ask, its haddock), chips and curry sauce.

I hope none of those wanting just chips are vegetarian as the OPs chippy uses beef dripping.

Brightmoonlight · 04/07/2025 21:43

I must look out for cans of Dandelion and Burdock, Only seen large bottles in Supermarkets.
But can gets batter bits. Midlands

BCBird · 04/07/2025 21:44

One Christmas one of the local chippies was advertising battered mince pies. 😂

LimeLime · 04/07/2025 21:51

Haddock supper, salt, and loads of chippy sauce. Cannae beat chippy sauce.

Funnywonder · 04/07/2025 21:52

Cod and chips. Plenty of salt and vinegar. I’ll eat about handful of chips and a few of bites of fish out of the batter. Not because I’m cutting back (hell no, I’m a greedy bastard) but because oily food just doesn’t like me. My stomach turns into a bloody washing machine. Can’t remember the last time I had proper fish and chips from the chippy.

Might be a northern thing ?
We' are also partial to gravy with our chips
And actually personally I like gravy with my fish and chips I like it soaking into the batter I realise this doesn't sound nice to some people, but I like it.

hexsnidgett · 04/07/2025 21:56

Chips and beans please. Make sure the chips are fried in vegetable oil.
Cheese and onion pukka pie if they have it.

I seem to be showing my ignorance of local delicacies tonight.
Where do you live to get mustard on F&C please?
Soured cream? Is this Scotland as well?

Just joking.

Masala fish in naan, mushy peas and a potato scallop from our closest chip shop. Orange chips if I head across the city.

TheTecknician · 04/07/2025 22:05

I wonder if deep fried battered black pudding or black pudding fritters are sold anywhere? I've never seen them - this is just my imagination at work.

If it was the local chippy just fish and chips. If I was in Lancashire I'd have steak pudding, chips and gravy. If I was in Wigan I'd have rag pudding, chips and gravy.

Never had rag pudding before last week.. my god it's lovely..

Omg I’d die for a rag pudding my nana used to make them but never got chance to get her recipe

They definitely are! Both black and white pudding suppers are a thing here 😋

fireplaceembers · 04/07/2025 22:11

Battered sausage, chips, scraps and Irish curry sauce separate please. And a can of full sugar Coke

RaraRachael · 04/07/2025 22:20

Fish supper (haddock) and 2 pickled onions.

NE Scotland - we also have a red pudding, mock chop and king rib but I've never sampled any of those delights.

LemonRedwood · 04/07/2025 22:21

Can't believe there's only 3 of us so far for scampi & chips.

I'll ring ahead so they can get the scampi on

mamaduckbone · 04/07/2025 22:26

Scottish chippers definitely along with white pudding and red pudding.
White pudding supper is really filling.

Olivesforteatonighty · 04/07/2025 22:30

Large haddock, small chips and mushy peas please.

Kimwestonhelpless · 04/07/2025 22:34

@RaraRachael I've not had a mock chop supper in over 40 years, they're a strange beastie and hate to think what's in them.

Johnbrown · 04/07/2025 22:35
