Sorry to hear you had a stressful week, Bizzey. Where are you off to?

HVAC tech has finished what he needed to do with the condenser outside and is now in the basement replacing the circuit board in the air handler. Fingers crossed he's successful, it's rather uncomfortable here, and I am so tired of trying to sleep in a hot bedroom.

bizzey · 15/07/2025 22:05

@MissConductUS ...I am off to Venice!

Been a 30 year wish list /bucket list !!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/07/2025 00:17

Was wondering about you @bizzey 🙂
Have a great trip with your boys. ☺️

Miss, it's 30c here and humidex says feels like 36c. Indeed! 🥵
Took dc to dental appt today for a check-up. It was baby's first. Both did great. ☺️

Took them swimming yesterday individually. So it was 2x for me. We all slept quite heavily as a result. It was also a nice way to beat the heat.

Went to the optician but they won't refer DSD to the Low Vision Clinic because she doesn't meet their requirements. When I asked more they said she doesn't have a bad visual field but then they agreed she hasn't actually had a visual field test because she hasn't complained- well if she can't see anything she won't know to complain! And they won't test her till her next appointment in two years.

I am seeking another solution.

We then had soft drinks and cake at the café on the market and I started a new book nook. I have to wait for batteries to arrive before I can go any further because the lamp wires will be stuck down at step two and they need testing first. And of course I don't have the right batteries to test them.

Off to the coast tomorrow for a drive and lunch.

MissConductUS · 17/07/2025 15:52

Myrtle, that's frustrating about your DSD's experience with the optician. Can you have her tested privately?

The air con saga continues. The condenser was running, then shutting off for 5-10 minutes, then starting up again. The technician came out yesterday and added two pounds of refrigerant, which got it going continuously again. This morning, it was short cycling again, so it seems like we have a refrigerant leak. That can be cheap or very expensive to repair, depending on where the leak is. The unit is eight years old. If the coil needs to be replaced, that's very expensive and it may make more sense to replace the whole thing.

I looked out on the deck last night after dinner as it was getting dark and spotted this creature. It's a Black Rat Snake, which are not venomous. He left shortly after I took his picture. He must have slithered up the posts that support the deck. I'd guess he was about five feet long.

Jeesuuuuussssss that snake! Holy Hannah! 😬

It's still hot here. No ac, but decent tower fans in all the rooms. I keep doors closed to rooms not in use and curtains closed in those rooms as well. It's not toooo bad...

DC are alternating meltdowns atm. Argument over an empty Perrier bottle. Both want to hold it. (Don't ask. There isn't a reason beyond, "because." ) Havoc has largely recovered, baby is screaming, "Open it" at me. It has now been taken away from both. 😵‍💫
I'm on my 2nd latte. Have warmed an extra half of bagel which I'm eating with cream cheese. It tastes stale, though. Baby just bit my leg. Nice. 🙄

Missconduct I’d be evacuating until further notice 😱😱😱😱 horrifying!

havoc I can relate 🤦‍♀️ not fun!

Myrtle - that sounds like a ‘computer says no’ jobs worth nightmare 😭

bizzey - enjoy! DH and I went a few years ago because he won a competition for a free flight. Wasn’t so ‘free’ by the time we got a flight for me and an air b n b but we thoroughly enjoyed it :)

I ticked off something from my wish list too - a bit of an odd one, but I took the kids to IKEA for an outing (too hot to go outdoors much atm), and the food court there is kosher, so I got to try the ikea Swedish meatballs 😆 I had one, but preferred the shnitzels. I’ve always wanted to do that. One day I’ll get to the kosher macdonalds, to try a happy meal, although I don’t really like burgers so it’s a bit of a waste.

hoping to go visit my grandmother for a few days next week in between day camps- last time we went to visit her, the kids didn’t go anywhere as the Iran war started the night we got there, and it was crazy, so I’m hoping to get to the beach with them and see friends in the area this time! She lives near the sea. Will work in shifts with DH, but it’s still nice to get away 🏝️

Our outside aviary is up!
Ds is happy. We need to move the budgies in over the next couple of days. Ds can't wait!

MissConductUS · 17/07/2025 19:01

Welcome, @MargaretThursday, and thanks for sharing you aviary news. If you don't have it already, download the Merlin app to learn more about your feathered friends.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/07/2025 19:40

Update: Havoc is quietly watching a kids program on tv. I'm nursing a content baby who is tucking feet up under my shirt making it too hot. I completed an insurance admin task getting info to my broker and I'm waiting for a 2nd load of laundry to finish. Plan is to take kids to the beach and/or playground with spray park. Also need to install a new smoke detector.

Welcome, @MargaretThursday, and thanks for sharing you aviary news. If you don't have it already, download the Merlin app to learn more about your feathered friends.

Thank you for the welcome. We have moved 4 surprised budgies into the inner part of the aviary overnight, where they seem to have settled. I'll let them into the outside in the morning. They've got some mullet (described as "crack for budgies" and some honey sticks so should be happy.

I have a nice photo of ds in the outside aviary having not realised the door latches from outside until he tried to get out. 😂

I have a scratched arm from catching them (not from them, they're mostly very gentle, but they know exactly where to hide in the living room to be awkward to catch).

MyrtleLion · 17/07/2025 21:52

She's an NHS patient, but specsavers are already private. I am going to Asda for my new glasses next week, so I'll ask them if they will do a visual field test.

If not, I will take her to an independent optician who isn't part of a chain. I hope Asda will be happy to test her - and I'm happy to pay any fee.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/07/2025 04:07

God, I'm tired. Couldn't sleep last night and was awake until 3:30am. Woke up just after 7, before 7:30 alarm and started getting ready. Baby had activity across town at 9. Was considering skipping it as my mum had a medical appt at 11 I was taking her to. Managed to get to both. Home, lunch the crashed at 3 and slept til 5:30.
It's 8pm and I'm yawning. 🥱

havoc an argument about an empty bottle and a bite on the leg - that brings me back. We are expecting temps that will feel like 36C next week. The last couple of days have been pleasant here.

MargaretThursday an outdoor aviary sounds delightful.

MissC sorry your AC woes are continuing. That is one horrible looking snake you saw on your deck. I've never seen a snake here and long may that remain the case.

bizzey have fun!

I have an eye appointment tomorrow morning. The ophthalmologist had been pestering me for weeks to book my annual exam, and I finally caved. I don't think I need new glasses, but who knows. The ophthalmologist's office is in walking distance, which is very handy.

One of my DDs is in town this weekend for a hen do. We'll see her for a long stretch (possibly hung over) on Sunday afternoon.

We had chicken fajitas and refried black beans, with tomatoes and iceberg lettuce for dinner. It's the first night in quite a while that the kitchen was cool enough to cook in. It's been a busy week and I'm glad it's Friday.

MyrtleLion · 19/07/2025 10:53

Our lunch with the neighbours has been cancelled due to thunderstorms. I habe to get my nails done for the last time before surgery in August. I'll be heading to that London for lunch with a friend and networking drinks on Wednesday.

MargaretThursday · 19/07/2025 16:25

It's been wet here (the budgies are divided whether to be excited by the funny water falling round the cage or horrified) but now feels thundery. I've been working this morning, and am going to a friend's bring and share birthday this evening.

Ds can't decide whether to sit in the aviary and admire or watch from outside.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/07/2025 18:24

Just watching a doc on silent screen star Mary Pickford. Had no idea she started United Artists with her dh Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin. And, more importantly, had no idea she was from Toronto, as Gladys Smith. 🇨🇦
Have got cinnamon pancakes with sliced banana, strawberries and maple syrup. And a latte, of course.
Temp has mercifully come down. It's cloudy and breezy at 16c atm. Looks like it will be cooler like this for a few days.

Math, enjoy time (nursing?😂) your dd after stagette.
Thursday, where are you located? How many birds do you have? The 4 you mentioned?
Myrtle, it is so difficult most of the time to get assistance for any type of special needs, isn't it? Our dear former thread friend Penguinsa shared difficulties she had getting needed help for her ds (with asd, I think).

@Deathraystare keeping you in my thoughts and hoping things are in the up for you. 💛

I've got sheets and mattress cover in the dryer now and and going to strip another bed and get moving to take dc out. Drove up to SFU last night to take them to the observatory, but they were sound asleep by the time we got there and I didn't have the heart to wake them. 😇😇 So, I turned around and drove hime stopping for gas on the way as price had dropped to $1.43/L and tank was on 1/4 full.

@Mumtobabyhavoc My darling boys have gone back to Lisbon and taken my DD with them. She will be back on Tuesday though. Gosh it’s quiet now. We had a lovely few days, playing outside with lots of water games, while it was hot, then art school when the weather was a bit drizzly. We watched a couple of Harry Potter films and played games on the Wii. Thank goodness granny can compete at the same level as the boys. We did lots of chatting as well. The elder one made me very tearful when he said, “Granny, you are not just my granny, but you are my friend as well.” What a little love. The younger one was designing houses where we could all live together. It included a pool, with a pool house, a cricket pitch, library, art room, playroom, Lego room, 6 bedrooms and bathrooms, cinema room as well as living rooms and kitchen.

I introduced them to the Monkees, which used to be my favourite group. The TV programme is being shown on a replay channel and I was recording it every day, although I have the complete boxed set of DVDs which my DD bought for me a couple of years ago. We started watching them in the evening and the boys really enjoyed them. I could hear the younger one singing the theme song while he was drawing a picture, so funny.

@bizzey have a lovely holiday.

@EllaDisenchanted those cakes look delicious. I can’t bake at all now. My cooking isn’t up to much now either.

@mathanxiety i have the Merlin app and I tend to use it in the early hours through the bathroom window. This last week, along with the usual little birds, there was a buzzard recorded and a woodpecker. I’ve never heard or seen either of these before.

@Deathraystare how is your job and house hunting going? I’ve been thinking of you a lot. I hope you are OK. 💐❤️

I had my second shingles vaccination on Thursday and my arm is swollen, hot and sore at the moment. I hope it’s going to settle down soon. I don’t remember the first one being so painful.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/07/2025 00:54

Uman I'm so glad you had such a nice visit! What a lovely comment from your gs. 💛💛💛

I ended up cleaning all day. I steam-mopped floors, area rugs, baseboards then switched pads and steamed mattresses and couches. Made up 2nd bed and put laundry in and hung to dry. Have now got white towels on hot with bleach. Had a late lunch/early dinner of quinoa salad with prawns (Costco). Havoc is now napping, fell asleep after amazing histrionics that lasted about a half hour. Planning on viewing the fireworks tonight, so will let Havoc sleep another hour.

Have you looked into 'cool' blankets? Not sure if they will be any good but I have seen adverts for them.

Deathraystare · 21/07/2025 07:59

Hade book club at a friend's on Saturday (normally a Sunday ). One of my friends has just got over a heart attack so it was lovely to see her up and about! We had Aperol spritzers which was lovely. I had quite a few and got very sweaty!

Saturday was very rainy where I was and I had to go out shopping. Typical me I forgot the one thing I needed so had to go out again! My friend lives in a basement flat so as I went down the stairs, my skirt was sweeping the stairs! I got soaked and of course I did not see the 'lake' across the road when I dashed across but the holes in my trainers felt it!!

Bloody annoying that the sun kept coming out and our host said we could maybe sit in the garden later and of course we never could because the rain kept coming . Yes I know I whinge about the sun...

Sorry for any typos but I broke my glasses and am borrowing readers from my friend and can hardly see anything!

Fingers crossed I will be able to finish filling in the council form (for a home) now I have gathered the mahoosive amount of paperwork needed!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/07/2025 08:24

Death, it's so nice that you've popped in here!🤗
I hope you can get a suitable place to live soon. 🤞

It was a lazy Sunday for us here. I took dc up Burnaby mountain to run around and to watch the sunset this evening. We went for froyo after - $$$ 😲 It was $13 or so for two servings without toppings.
Last night we watched the fireworks, it was night 1/3.

https://hondacelebrationoflight.com

Pics of the mountain won't load, so I'm adding a pic of a surprisingly delicious piece of pie I had for dessert the last two nights (Costco). It's blueberry cheese pie. It's cheesecake on the bottom, blueberry pie filling on top, in a pie crust with crumbled piecrust on top. I looked at it every time I shopped the past month, or so, and finally bought it to try as part of a "buy different things" shop to relieve boredom. Plus, it was fricken hot and I didn't really cook for a few days. We had rotisserie chicken, tempura prawns, quinoa salad, corn on the cob and this amazing pie for a few nights.

Yummy food as normal!

At our bookclub (where we did not discuss our recent reads as not all of us have finished them, but we have decided to tackle Thomas Hardy next time!(, we had a lovely gooseberry crumble cake a friend baked that was a Waitrose recipe. It was lovely, especially with ice cream!
