This was the view of the front yard at 6:00 AM this morning. Still waiting for the air con technician.

@Mumtobabyhavoc that is so beautiful!
@EllaDisenchantedthe cakes look so delicious! Are you in the UK? Or Israel?
@mathanxietyi have the Merlin app and I love checking out the birds!
We are having solar panels installed and the scaffolding has gone up today, much to DS1’s disgust as it’s right by his window!
Busy day tomorrow - I’ll take DS to his work experience then go for a run along the canal. Visit the library and take clothes to the charity shop - then food shopping and ring the holiday company about an issue with entering passport details……..
still thinking of you @Deathraystare

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/07/2025 23:12

Ella, I bet it was delicious and I'd love your recipe if you don't mind posting it. 😛
Miss, lucky that tree was at the end of your drive and not near your house. 🍀
Sprouts, the Cypress lookout is one of my favourite spots. 😍

Had dc out by 10am to a spray park. Stayed about 2 hours then home. Stopped at A&W as a treat on the way home. Burgers were meh and fries too salty. I'm not a huge fan of fast food, and we rarely partake, but for $17 I expected better. Havoc is napping and I'm about to as well. 🥱

Havoc, the tree that came down was about 100 yards down the road. It still pulled down our wires.

The HVAC bloke did show up Tuesday evening and got the compressor working again. A circuit board failed, presumably because of a power surge when the wires came down. He was able to bypass it but it needs to be replaced for safety reasons. They had to order the part and will be back tomorrow with it. I'm just please we have the air con back.

DS is taking the train to Baltimore tomorrow to meet one of his uni friends to see a baseball game and visit the city. I've been to Baltimore for conferences. It's a bit rough, but there are some nice parts.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/07/2025 01:08

Spent the afternoon with dc in the west end/English Bay/seawall and walking through the neighbourhood a bit. Someone has built a staircase to a section of the beach and planted s flower garden. Pics won't load, sadly.

Ugh, sooo lazy today. Was awake at 4:30am and not back asleep until 7. DC awake at 7:30. Managed a very short nap, but still need a lot more sleep. Quite warm here today at 25c. Temp to reach 29 by Monday, I think.
It's already 3 and just going to get out with the kids. Had a nice salad for lunch.
@Deathraystare everything okay?
@bizzey are you away yet?

I had a job interview yesterday that went very well and DH and I celebrated with prosecco.

I had an eye test earlier this week and was talking to the dispensing optician about DSD's eyesight. She was born extremely premature and gets an NHS voucher to help pay the costs of her glasses. It turns out that DSD may be officially sight-impaired, which would help her tremendously if she can be certified as such.

Last night we had a conversation with her and she showed me her prescription which shows very high myopia with astigmatism and a strong near addition. This indicates significant vision issues, even with glasses.

So I will take her to the opticians next week and discuss getting a referral to the low vision clinic (our local one is a regional centre of excellence). If she does get certified then she should automatically qualify for PIP, which will be a big help.

Today I am drinking tea in the garden in the lovely sunshine.

Lovely tea set, Myrtle. 😍
Hopeful news for dsd and fingers crossed for you.

Managed a decent sleep last night, although if I had been left alone I likely would've slept longer. But, Mummy, I have a poo., necessitates getting out of bed. 😵‍💫😂
Made pancakes for breakfast. Some with blueberries from the garden that we picked last night, some plain and some with choc chips. We also picked peas. Garden has been weeded, tidied and a few plants cut back quite a bit.

Another sticky day here, following a tremendously humid day yesterday, and thunderstorms rolling through for the last two nights.

I moved several pots around on my deck to avoid being deluged by runoff from the deck upstairs. More storms are expected tonight, as far as I know.

The humidity this morning was 80%, but I set out for the annual library sale undaunted, with my little granny shopping basket on wheels. I bought twenty books for $31 and a library tote bag for $1. I bumped into an old friend too, a very nice bonus.

Umanresources · 13/07/2025 04:11

Just cooled down in the garden to a very pleasant 30°. My grandsons have gone to spend the day and possibly sleepover with a couple of their friends. My DS and their Dad were friends from being small and keep in touch regularly. It's very quiet here now and I'm not enjoying the peace as much as I thought. I am going to miss them so much when they go back to Lisbon later this week.

We've had a wonderful time, playing games and chatting, going to the park and making lovely memories. Yesterday was spent in the garden having water fights. I'm hoping we get the pool out tomorrow because it's going to be another scorcher. Then we are going to have a barbecue.
I've been sitting in the garden all afternoon, under the parasol and drawing, while my DD has been reading and doing crossword puzzles. We've played a couple of games as well and my OH made us a lovely salad with scallops, followed by cheesecake. I feel very spoiled.

EllaDisenchanted · 13/07/2025 13:47

Thanks ☺️ @sproutsandparsnips I’m in Israel.
@Mumtobabyhavoc ill send it by pm bc it’s from a cookbook :) it’s an American Jewish cookbook so it’s in cups. Am I right you’re based in Canada? There’s differences in cup sizes between the UK and USA, so just check whatever you’ve got works!
I made a similar looking salad this week for my cousins engagement party, with homemade croutons 😋 from the same cookbook
@MyrtleLion that looks so relaxing 😎

Today is a fast day on the Jewish calendar and it coincides with my son’s English birthday, so he has requested his fave supper of lasagne to break the fast on and a birthday cake. My lasagne is a very labour intensive dish, with multiple sauces (bechamel 😋) (no meat), and I’ve been cooking it all afternoon while fasting. Think I’m going to get someone else to make the cake 🎂 I’ve had enough of the smells from the kitchen!

Good luck with job @MyrtleLion 🙏

MissConductUS · 13/07/2025 17:12

Myrtle, good luck with the job. How old is your DSD? Do you have to be an adult to get PIP?

Uman, it's been peaceful here too, especially with DS away for the weekend.

Ella, it must be torture to have to cook while fasting. I hope you found someone else to make the cake.

Math, it's been unpleasantly hot and humid here too.

The story of the air con repair took a turn towards disaster on Friday. The AC was working, but they still needed to replace a circuit board in the compressor. They were able to get it working last week by bypassing that board's function, which is to shut down the compressor if the level of refrigerant was too low or too high.

The bloke (not the same one who got us working last week) shows up late Friday afternoon with the replacement board. There's a problem. While replacing it, he somehow managed to send a current of electricity to another circuit board in the air handler in the house. This is the part that operates the fan that blows the cold air into the house. The current destroyed that board. If the air handler isn't working, we have no air con, and they can't even order a replacement for it until tomorrow (Monday). So we've had no central air con all weekend. It's been getting up to about 32 degrees C in the afternoons, so a bit uncomfortable.

They were very apologetic, but other than suggesting that we buy some window air con units, had nothing to suggest. Almost all of our windows are casement style, with the panes that swing out, and won't take any kind of AC unit. We have two in the family room that slide horizontally. DH was able to buy a portable AC unit Friday night that would work with one of those windows. It's the kind that sit on the floor, on wheels, with a hose that come out the back and discharges the hot air through a panel that you fit into the window. It's doing a decent job of keeping the family room and kitchen cool, but the bedrooms are at the other end of the house. It's better than nothing. DS knows nothing about any of this. I have to pick him up at the train station later when he lets me know what train he'll be on.

DH will be on the phone tomorrow with the HVAC company first thing Monday to sort out the rest of this. I suspect that Tuesday or Wednesday is the earliest we can expect the air con to be fully fixed.

Oh, last but not least, I found some kind of animal droppings on our second story deck. I suspect it's a racoon that has climbed up to steal the tomatoes I have growing there. I may have to get rid of them.

Oh my gosh Miss, what a nightmare!!my great grandmother would hang wet muslin cloth in the windows, which would cool the room down. A little time but might work for your bedroom?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/07/2025 20:55

I took the kids to the Carnival del Sol yesterday. I'd never been and had wanted to go the past two years, but it was always too hot and dc very young for the heat. I brought a golf umbrella that I jerry rigged to the stroller to give us shade to sit under for breaks and had snacks with cold packs to keep the food cold and put behind baby for a few mins here and there and on the back of Havoc's neck to bring relief. Luckily a breeze picked up, but with all the food trucks/grills etc it was still hot. We went to Granville Island after for the splash park and some treats. I bought donuts from Lee's, some for a neighbour who did a kind thing for me a couple weeks ago amd lemons so I can make lemonade (before I remembered I need a new pitcher). 🤦‍♀️ I was inspired to make my own after paying $11 for one at the festival for Havoc. Honestly, that's outrageous. Similarly, they're $10 at Playland. 😵‍💫 on the walk back to the car we saw some artists painting a mural on a building and advertising an art festival. Oh, besides the increased security now in place at festivals since the attack at the Lapu Lapu festival this one had a security person patting people down and using a metal detector.

DSD is 32. I think you do have to be an adult to claim because it's an in-work benefit, but she moved in with us from her mother's home in Spain when she was 24.

It's a shame her mother moved to Spain when DSD was 7, because she had support in school and would no doubt have been supported into work or semi-independent living as she grew older.

She can't claim housing benefit because she lives with us and as family we are not allowed to charge her rent. That in itself doesn't matter as we can afford our housing costs without it, and we charge her a nominal amount as her contribution to the household, but it means she has no idea about money and the cost of heating, WiFi, power, water etc. If anything happened to us, I think she would struggle to pay bills and manage money.

mathanxiety · 14/07/2025 01:58

I went out to Mass this morning and noticed a huge mushroom had sprouted overnight in the lawn. Came back from Mass an hour later and there was a junior version about three inches tall a few feet away from the big one.

I sat out on my deck in the afternoon sipping fizzy water, finished one of the books I bought yesterday, and got started on another. Had warm broccoli salad for lunch and a pulled pork sandwich for dinner. The locusts are in good voice tonight and the hummingbird feeder is like a hummingbird Grand Central Station.

Bad news about your AC, MissC. I hope the repair company does its utmost to get you up and running again and sends a competent employee next time.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/07/2025 20:40

Your afternoon sounds wonderful, Math.

Past couple of days my contacts have been driving me crazy. Itchy, not sitting right, blurry. Wondering if they're dirty and I forgot to change to a new pair. Ugh. Thank god I've got my eye appt this month. Then it hit me: maybe I have them switched? Took them out and switched them and sure enough they feel better and I can see better. I must have switched them inadvertently for cleaning a few nights ago.

You had a lovely day, Math. Now I'm craving pulled pork and can't think of anyplace near here that serves it. You really need a proper BBQ restaurant for pulled pork.

Havoc, I had no idea that contact lenses were specific to the right or left eye. Everyday a school day on MN.

The HVAC company has ordered the board for the air handler and plan on coming out tomorrow to install it. It turned out that we installed the furnace in 2017 and it's covered under a ten year warranty. The lack of AC is getting very old at this point.

We're under a severe thunderstorm watch and have had a lot of thunder, lightening and rain in the last few hours. It has cooled things off a bit.

sproutsandparsnips · 14/07/2025 23:12

@Mumtobabyhavocthats annoying! I have dailies now after years of on and off issues with monthlies, no problems now.
@MissConductUShope the air con fixed now. We don’t generally have aircon in domestic houses here but we did buy a portable air con unit for DS’s attic room which gets unbearably hot in warm weather. It has been worth the money this weekend! I have to keep finding excuses to go up there. Fresher today thank goodness. The muslin cloth sounds very practical @EllaDisenchanted
Glad you’re having a lovely time with family @Umanresources!

Had a lovely weekend for our silver anniversary - BBQ with friends and family Saturday and out for lunch Sunday with family.
work today was a slog though finished over an hour late……

Miss, different prescription for each eye. I switched left, which is also toric, to right. 🤦‍♀️

The HVAC bloke got here about 20 minutes ago. It's almost 4:00 PM, so I hope he's prepared to stay until it's fixed. The shop sent the circuit board up with a separate driver as it just got in. As annoyed as I am, they do seem to be making an effort to get us fixed as soon as possible. It's pretty hot today, 33C currently.

We got almost two inches of rain yesterday. Some towns in the area got eight inches of rain and there was widespread flooding. The good news is that the front garden and plants on the deck are holding up well. While waiting for the HVAC tech I picked some wild raspberries from the bushes next to the driveway.
