Thank you for that, it made interesting reading! Unfortunately, I'd be hesitant about using ultrasonics or chilli pepper and garlic to deter a fox, if indeed it is a fox - I wouldn't want to upset my cats. I was taken by this possible solution, though. I must have a word with my husband, perhaps he'd oblige?

"Male Urine
This one is a little unusual, but it is very effective! If you’re comfortable resorting to this method, it will definitely pay off! Essentially, foxes mark their territory with their own urine. Male urine disrupts the trail of fox urine.
Once the fox’s scent has been masked, they will feel more vulnerable and leave your garden altogether. This is a free, effective, if not a bit strange way to get rid of foxes without killing them. Although, it may leave you feeling a bit queasy!"

Wonder what the neighbours would think?

EllaDisenchanted · 30/06/2025 21:22

Havoc that sounds dreadful! 🫂
Acat… I think you have to get him to do it for research purposes 😜

I’ve had my daughter’s nursery graduation this evening. Can’t believe my baby is going to school in a few months! Her contemporaries in the UK are going into year 2 in sept, but I’m still not ready 😭
we have had a not so calm evening as I saw a cockroach in the lounge 😨😨😨 cannot locate the cockroach killing spray, and no neighbours had a flamethrower, so one of my big boys trapped it under a mixing bowl. Waiting for DH to get home and deal with it 😨😨😨

MyrtleLion · 30/06/2025 23:11

Given that havoc was throwing up as well, I think you must have had food poisoning.

It’s been really hot today - 32 degrees - so I’ve had the fan on and the French windows open, knitting and watching TV. I’m trying new stitching patterns with a lot of success, but the last one went wrong in the last three rows so I must be tired.

Watching Olivia Rodrigo’s Glastonbury set while browsing MN. She is very talented.

Umanresources · 30/06/2025 23:39

Hope you are well on the mend Havoc. It’s never fun throwing up.

My cleaners came this morning at 9 and worked till 1.30. They were so good and my windows are sparkling, the woodwork is gleaming and they have tidied things away beautifully. I now need to go through the cupboards and find things.

My birthday grandson video called me twice today. We are both getting excited with only 2 sleeps to go. He’s asked if he can call me again tomorrow. I love the fact that he wants to chat so much to me. I suppose there will come a time when he doesn’t want to chat to granny, so I’m making the most of it now.

Ella, I catch bugs the same way! 😭 I trap them with a very large clear cup then slide a piece of construction paper under, carefully pick it all up and dump it outside.

@Umanresources Congrats to your daughter!

It's Canada Day here. 🇨🇦
DC are running around, in and out of the kitchen, with an empty milk container pretending to pour milk on each other. I'm drinking a latte. (Surprise) 🙄 And making oatmeal with steel cut oats.

Uman, congratulations to your daughter on her very long run!

Ella, congratulations to your daughter on her nursery graduation!

Havoc, happy Canada Day!

We're back to the hot weather here, and the heat wave in Europe is in the news.

The turtles are keeping cool and warm at the same time.

They've selected my replacement and it's not my first choice, and passed over someone who works for me now. She's on holiday until next week and doesn't know that she's not going to get the job. I'm not looking forward to her getting that news, but it wasn't up to me in the end.

For some reason, those turtle pictures are clearing the software check. I'll try posting just one here.

Umanresources · 02/07/2025 05:55

Am wide awake and it's 5.45 am now. I've been awake for over an hour because I had a bad dream. I was in a cafe with friends and was going to have a piece of cherry cake, there were two pieces left and the person in front of me bought both. She explained she needed both to make her mother of the bride outfit. No one thought this strange. I went without cake and joined my friends but we had to leave shortly after as there was going to be an earthquake. We were very panicky, then I woke up after running (ha, as if I could) down several flights of stairs.

Now I think I'm too excited to go back to sleep, because my family will be here later this morning. Their flight leaves in just over an hour and I'm tracking it already!

I hope everyone has a good day today as well!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/07/2025 06:58

Definitely an odd dream, Uman. 🧐

I'm watching Happy Feet with a very awake Havoc. 🤷‍♀️
Baby has been asleep since around 7:30pm after falling and biting lip badly. 😭
I had the kids out this afternoon to take in festivities at Kits beach. It was fairly hot and there were lots of people bbq-ing, picnicking and hanging out. We were at the Showboat Stage which had kids' entertainment and cupcakes. I didn't think to get pics of the crowds, but by the time we were leaving it was packed.
Havoc has just fallen asleep! 🤗

havoc glad you're feeling better. Sorry about baby's cut lip. Lovely photos, and belated Happy Canada Day!

MissC we've only run the big AC unit in the sitting room window,, closed off the kitchen and bathroom, and managed to keep cool that way, or coolish (78-80 degrees is fine for us).I still dread the bill though.

I took DD to Union Station to catch a train for an eight hour trip to see a friend for the holiday weekend. We left early and it was a good thing because the streets in the environs of the station are being dug up, meaning we needed to take a slower route. It took me ages to get home again thanks to many detours and closed bridges. As they say, we have two seasons here, Winter and Road Construction.

As soon as I got home I got stuck into hanging a mini blind on the glass part of my kitchen door. The LL cut down a weed tree that used to shade my kitchen nicely on summer afternoons, hence the need for the blind. I then decided to tackle something that has annoyed me for the eleven years I've been in the apartment, a mystery white cable stapled to the skirting boards and painted over in parts. It goes up and over doors too. Thanks to Reddit, I identified it as a 'coaxial cable' for cable tv (remember that?) and figured it was no longer needed. I found the place it was plugged in - on an exterior wall, so perhaps someone had once set up a dish or antenna there - and unscrewed it, then pulled out all the staples attaching it to the woodwork. Most of it is now in the bins at the alley. I still have a little portion to go that's behind a bookcase, but it will do tomorrow after my bone density scan in the morning.

Locusts have hatched and started to make their presence known. Daylilies are also blooming all over town. There's almost no traffic on the streets and the downtown area is a ghost town - people decamp en masse to the woods and lakes here for the Fourth.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/07/2025 07:47

Math, thanks. It was so awful and unbelievable at the same time. (And a bit frightening!)
Baby seems ok, but is aware of the "owie" which is pointed to as is chin which has now healed, but I can see the scar will be apparent. 😢
Interesting about your cable story. I've got cable outlets in all the rooms and boxed the cables up just in case. 🙄😂
Are you doing anything special for the 4th?
Did you say, Locusts? How biblical! 😬

Havoc bug spray was found, we sprayed under the bowl, and DS 13 removed it. I'm debating chucking the mixing bowl. Seems so wasteful but it's scratched plastic, and i'm worried about cockroach germs, and the spray getting in the scratches. (I'm grossed out mainly!). <hugs> for baby havoc.

uman I cleaned my windows last week too! we figured out they can be lifted out the frames to get them out, so I finally cleaned all the dust and sand off the other side. They slide, so it's impossible to get the other side without either taking them out or getting a window cleaner.

math I have a box of mystery cables that are kept 'just in case'. I have actually once or twice found something useful in the box, but probably not enough to justify for keeping for years. Where do they come from?? Do they reproduce themselves in secret??

I've done more cooking and baking this week and tried out some more recipes, yesterday was garlic knots. DS15 also made dinner (cottage pie) this week under my supervision. Figured it's a good time to start teaching him some cooking skills over the holidays. Came out delicious and he was very pleased with himself :)

At least the turtles are behaving themselves! I have not been in my friend's garden agan because I think the ninja pigeon will still be there! We can only use the garden at the weekend (to lline dry washing and do general gardening stuff) as the workmen overhead seem to chuck stuff in the garden and. we do not have hard hats!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/07/2025 18:23

Ella, def toss the bowl! 😱 plastic + poison.
I remember cockroaches in Australia. Have seen them in Las Vegas, too. But, locusts??? Even cicadas creep me out and I saw tonnes of those in Greece.
I woke up to find a bug I'd never seen on my bathroom floor last week. Six legs, I think, crawling, a bit on the large side, think half the length of your thumb, orange with a bit of black body and sort of translucent.
Swearing, I had to get my glasses, large tall cup and went back to trap it. Then a sheet of construction paper which I slid sliwly under the cup, picked it up carefully and dumped over the side of the deck. I've been known to just drop everything and leave it until safe to retrieve which is often several days later.

Anyone else read the 4-weeks without a bed change by DH thread? 😭

Welcome, @OrangeCrushes, and thanks for sharing your snacks and drinks news.

Ella, get rid of the bowl.

I'm taking a few hours of annual leave today and have tomorrow off for Independence Day.

EllaDisenchanted · 03/07/2025 18:59

Havoc you are very brave - I make everyone else trap the scary bugs 🐜
We have lots of crickets and little cute lizards, and these massive ants. I mean I hear the crickets, rarely see them.

Ella I had a big basket of cables, cords, and mystery tech accessories up to this time last year, when I emptied it all out, hoovered up the dust, and realised nobody had used anything from the basket for a decade. I saved a few items I recognised and took the rest to the alley, where the scrap metal woman scooped it all up. The basket now holds family photos.

I stuffed steel wool (to keep mice away) into the holes in two walls that were left when I yanked the cable cord out. Someone clearly had cable service in one of the bedrooms many years ago.

I touched up the paint on the woodwork yesterday afternoon, and dabbed paint into the tiny holes made by the staples that had attached the cable cord to the woodwork.

Today I went out to Mass (my parish has one on the Fourth of July and also on Thanksgiving on top of regular daily mass and Sundays and holy days). The opening hymn was set to the tune of Finlandia, and today's gospel was the always topical Beatitudes - particularly topical these days. Most of the congregation opted for blue attire.

Got home in a downpour and dodged / hopped out and moved orange traffic cones to return to my parking spot - the local parade route runs past the front of my building so they block off all the streets leading to the route two blocks east and west.

The parade was undoubtedly what George Washington would have envisioned 249 years ago ; ) - local State Senate representative and Congressional member (both Democrats), high school drum corps (they are excellent), boy and girl scout troops, high school drill team, local clubs including vintage and antique car enthusiasts, local gay and lesbian + alliance, various local service organisations, emergency services, Friends of the local libraries marching with a big banner advertising the upcoming sale and tossing rolled up tote bags into the soaked crowd and more, plenty of floats. There was a big turnout despite the rain. I went down to the big front porch to take a few photos and found two families I didn't know sheltering there and enjoying breakfast picnics. One had a box of bakery donuts and one had home made blueberry muffins, which they shared. Delcious!

havoc glad the cut has healed. It's possible the scar won't be too noticeable as time goes on.
