Great news @MyrtleLion 🫶

I spoke too soon. I have to see the outpatient team in the morning and though I could go home and come back, it is a logistical nightmare. I will stay tonight, see the team and then go home.

Umanresources · 23/10/2025 16:13

I hope you can soon get home @MyrtleLion . There is nothing like your own bed! I’m sure that helps with healing. Plus no shouty ladies.
@mathanxiety we had sausage and mash last night as well. Our sausages are from an online butcher and are the best I’ve ever tasted. I do stock up on them in the freezer. My Portuguese family love them too. Sometimes we have toad in the hole instead of mash.
Hopefully your sleeping pattern will have got better @Mumtobabyhavoc. I seem to sleep in 3 hour blocks. When I wake up I have to go to the loo, of course, which is a bit of a struggle.
It was my birthday last Tuesday and I had a fantastic day. Amongst other things my sister in law made me a beautiful quilt for my bed, my daughter got me a bird feeder with a camera, I got a new iPad and a fabulous wicker hamper filled with goodies and I’ll be able to use the empty basket for some art supplies. I’m so lucky.

@Umanresources happy belated birthday! 🩷
what a beautiful quilt and sentiment from your SiL. ❤️
i also love the idea of a camera with a bird feeder. ☺️
Poor sleep is hard to take, isn't it? 😵‍💫
So, I had to Google Toad in the Hole. Had heard of it, though. We don't have that dish over here - at least I've never heard anyone mention making it or having it as a family dish growing up. I read it is often served with onion gravy. Do you make that, too? That's another uncommon thing here, but I've seen it mentioned on various threads here on MN. 😂 I guessing pork sausages are typical?

It's 11c and rainy here. I've put the heat on. We're all fighting mild colds, sneezing/stuffy noses mostly, except baby who had a fever of 38.2c at 6:30am. So, gave some Tylenol and nursed back to sleep. Am doing the nursing til 2/self-weaning so am also hoping the antibodies I pass along will help.

Have had an iced latte and some chai spiced loaf. Also did push-ups and planks. 😁

Oh dear myrtle, that’s frustrating 😖
happy birthday uman! What a gorgeous quilt!
my eldest turned 16 today. I feel I aged quite a lot since yesterday 😄
it was hot here today and walking home uphill in the heat was not fun (32c). I’m desperate to get my cozy jumpers out but it will be pointless for a while yet.
Our Shabbat guest cancelled, which is a shame, bit it means I’ve got a quiet weekend ahead of me, and can get away with doing very little cooking.

Umanresources · 23/10/2025 17:40

@Mumtobabyhavoc Thank you for my birthday wishes. I seem to be getting

We do indeed have onion gravy, when we remember to start caramelising the onions in time, otherwise just beef gravy and the sausages are pork. The smaller Yorkshire puddings are traditionally served with roast beef, but we don’t have beef much, so we have them with sausages or any of our roast meals.

I got my daughter to take a pic of the rainbow about 5 minutes ago, but now it’s vanished!

My OH and I had our flu injections on Wednesday, the only side effect I am suffering at the moment is a huge and painful red lump in my arm.

I finally got home at 5.30pm today. But I'm much happier now I'm at home.

I have bags of drugs, so I must remember I still have the infection but it's now being managed at home.

Glad you are home Myryle 🤗
lovely rainbow pic and yummy food pics Uman 😋
yes, too hot for an uphill walk Ella 🥵

Fantastic news @MyrtleLion
@bizzeywhat is the difference between centigrade and Celsius?……
Welcome @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHERand thanks for sharing your woolly news. I do love octopuses.
Hope all fully recovered soon @Mumtobabyhavoc
@Umanresourceswe had sausage and mash last night as well! Never really had toad in the hole.
Just been to DS2’s parents’ evening. Missed 2 appointments because one set of parents were with a teacher for 25 minutes…..
DS’s team were due to play a team on Sunday who cancelled. Coaches got a replacement fixture but turns out the team is the best in South wales (possibly all wales) but no one will play them for fear of being crushed. They rarely get to play a full game as it’s always called early due to them winning by 50 points. When they realised this the coaches agreed would not be beneficial for us to play them and the boys will have a training session as we have a lot of new players.

mathanxiety · 24/10/2025 02:12

Belated birthday wishes, Uman.

Myrtle , so glad you're finally home.

How funny that so many of us were enjoying the same meal.

Another chilly and very windy day today, but I was better dressed. I still felt like a mug of cocoa when I came home from work.

MissConductUS · 24/10/2025 14:54

Happy birthday, Uman, and Ella, happy birthday to your eldest. 16 is a good age - independent, but not quite ready to flee the nest.

Apologies for being missing for a few days. I've found that in retirement, I spend far less time in front of a computer, so less idle posting or scrolling on MN. I've also been working on cleaning/decluttering our garage. Today was bulk pickup day by the town, and they took away 16 large bin bags of stuff I cleaned out. The garage looks much better now.

The rector of my church went to England last July and did the Pilgrims' Way walk from Winchester Cathedral to Canterbury Cathedral. It's about 180 miles. Last Sunday, she did a presentation after services of the pictures she took of the cathedrals, the landscapes she walked through, and the lovely people she met. She also encountered lots of sheep, who often blocked the walking paths. Southern England is lovely.

MyrtleLion · 24/10/2025 20:26

Safely home but very tired. I think 18 days without proper sleep will do that.

I'm going to Stratford upon Avon tomorrow to see the Royal Shakespeare Company do Measure for Messure. We will stay over and have dinner at a nice hotel too.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/10/2025 21:14

Thanks for the update Miss. i applaud your productivity. 🤗

Have a great time Myrtle. Can't wait to hear all about it. ☺️

I'm with you re hot chocolate Math. 😋

It's a rainy day here and was blustery, but I just noticed the trees are now completely still. I've got bed sheets in the dryer now. I was just thinking how much I like sitting indoors with some soft light when it is all grey and stormy outside. I'm going to attempt to watch Good Night, And Good Luck (the play with George Clooney) again.

Thinking of you @Deathraystare and hoping you are okay. 🫶
You, too @bizzey And missing your quirky musings. 🩷

I spent the evening finally watching Bake Off (it airs here on Netflix on Fridays) and making my usual Friday night list of chores to get done and errands to run at the weekend. It's definitely time to sort through the freezer.

The World Series started tonight (Toronto Blue Jays v LA Dodgers) but the series will have at least four games so I chose the Bake Off instead.

I'm hoping to make it to the farmer's market tomorrow as it's almost over for the season. Last year I bought some small gourds there that made nice Hallowe'en-ish decorations.

Myrtle - hope your getaway will be fun and that your recovery will be speedy.

MissC that's an impressive total for the junk removal.

Umanresources · 25/10/2025 21:19

@MissConductUS We have some wonderful places in the North of our country too, the Lake District, the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales to name a few. My OH and his family are from the south and my family are from the North. We don’t have a rivalry though, we all get on so well and enjoy seeing different places around the country.

@MyrtleLion enjoy your Stratford visit. I’ve only been to the RSC once and it was to see Romeo and Juliet; it was early in our dating relationship and it was incredibly romantic. It was a very hot evening and during the interval we went outside and were crowded with other playgoers, when it started to pour. By the time we got back in we were drenched and the second half of the play was quite steamy (the audience that is) and a bit smelly because of wet clothing and hair.

@mathanxiety We watch Bake-off too. It’s one of those feel good programmes where people actually help each other when things are going wrong.

@Mumtobabyhavoc Did you manage to watch your play? I’ve been watching Hotel Costiera, set on the Amalfi coast, stunning scenery, it’s a crime show, with an underlying mystery story of a missing person. The actors are impossibly good looking.

I’ve felt quite down today and a bit of a failure. I’ve been struggling with climbing the stairs and I’ve finally decided that I need to get a stairlift. It makes me feel so old and decrepit, especially as no one in my family had to get one. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to bed earlier. I put it off till I can’t keep my eyes open any longer.

MissConductUS · 27/10/2025 14:38

Uman, I'd love to visit the northern area of England someday, as well as the south. Get the stairlift. You'll feel much more empowered in your home.

Math, there's not much interest in the world series here since the Yankees didn't quite make it in.

DS is planning to move into his new apartment in mid-November, so we took him furniture shopping yesterday. Our favorite furniture store is about a 40-minute drive north of us, but it's mostly through a rural area with a lovely view of the mountains. Math, I think you have the same chain in Chicago - Bob's Discount Furniture. They don't do sales or discounts; it's an everyday low price model. We got him a bedroom set, a new mattress, and a sofa. Some other things we can move from home for him, and he'll doubtless add some things after he moves in.

I think we're at peak foliage colors now. I thought it was funny the way the cat scrunched into the corner of the love seat (also from Bob's).

The play was marvellous, despite an accident on the M6 making us a few minutes late. We then had an early dinner and I slept.

I saw the consultant today and he's very clear that it's a nasty infection I'm battling, with some very heavy duty antibiotics for the next three months. I may not feel well again until it's over.

I slept most of the day and hope to sleep more over the next few days. Unfortunately I'm not allowed any supplements, including iron and Vitamin D, despite mild anaemia, and I've had to come off my HRT as well, so I do feel very grotty.

Umanresources · 27/10/2025 23:48

Poor you Myrtle, antibiotics really can make you feel grotty (great descriptive word), but I hope you feel the benefit soon. Sleep is the best way to heal if you can manage it. It’s a good chance now to take it easy and catch your breath. My daughter found some lovely painting by numbers sets, which helped her with mindfulness activities. She has one on the go at the moment which is taken from a photograph of my grandsons. 💐

The photos are gorgeous Miss. I love the russet colours of autumn. You would be made very welcome in the North. We are a friendly bunch up north! 💐

We’ve had 3 quotes now for the stairlift and I have a clear favourite so far. The salesman loved our stairs which are curved, but unfortunately add quite a bit to the price. The first salesman also made the mistake of thinking that my partner was my son. I am older than him and I think my illness has taken its toll on me. He now introduces himself as my partner when he opens the door to the salesmen to save any embarrassment. I do find it quite funny though.

@Mumtobabyhavoc hope everyone is well. You’ve been missed. ❤️

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/10/2025 23:23

Still under the weather, Uman. Glad you are making progress re stairlift! ☺️

Raining and 10c here. Kids asleep, napping. I made these and a pot of tea if anyone wants to pop by. ☺️

Gorgeous colours, MissC. We're experiencing quite a mild, dry, and not very windy spell here, so the trees are really splendid, especially the sugar maples. Yes, we have Bob's here, and in fact I think one of my couches came from there (via DS). I hope your DS will settle in comfortably.

Sleep.as much as you can, Myrtle and conserve your energy. I hope the antibiotics will work.

Uman - a stairlift would give you energy for other activities you enjoy, and keep the stairs from draining you.

havoc hope you'll be back to full health soon.

The roadwork continues around here, with a great deal of heavy machinery, the smell of hot asphalt, and I occasionally turn a corner only to find the street is torn up or full of road rollers and men in hi viz.

Hump day tomorrow!! Yay!

sproutsandparsnips · 31/10/2025 20:59

Looks lovely @Mumtobabyhavoc! Your cooking/baking is second to none!
Hope you can decide on a stairlift @Umanresourcesand the installation goes without hitch.
@MyrtleLionoh gosh hope you start to improve soon.
Lovely colours @MissConductUS
What is hump day @mathanxiety?
Also hoping @Deathraystareand @bizzeyare ok

mathanxiety · 01/11/2025 04:19

Hump day is the middle day of the work week, sprouts. It's all uphill to Wednesday, and the gentle slide to the weekend begins when you throw on your coat and sprint to the exit at the end of Wednesday afternoon.

Hallowe'en has come once again. We get very few callers where we live (busy street), and I usually leave a bowl of lollipops on the front steps for whoever wants them as I don't fancy going down to the vestibule all evening. DD and I ventured out walking about 5pm to see how it was going on the side streets. It was a lovely evening, no wind or rain, and the town was heaving with excited trick or treaters, parents, and dogs. One enterprising family had set up a lemonade and hot cocoa stand to benefit a local animal shelter. They were doing brisk business. I retrieved my empty bowl when we got home.

Umanresources · 01/11/2025 15:52

Those buns look delicious @Mumtobabyhavoc . We were watching ‘Bake-off: an extra slice’, which is a comedy programme with the last baker to have left the tent and comedians/fans with a baking expert on a panel. They show disaster bakes or stunning ones and read out baking mishaps. There was one this week about someone who had made a cheesecake, which had pink bits in it. When asked what the pink bits were, she replied, “Ham”, she had picked up the wrong cheese, but decided to use it anyway. They never said what it tasted like though 😂
@sproutsandparsnips I have chosen the stairlift I want. It’s not the cheapest or the most expensive, just right in the middle and I was also offered £500 off the price they had quoted. I’ve not told them yet, but I’m hopeful of the price coming down a bit more.
@mathanxiety We’ve never had trick or treaters here, but every year my OH puts sweets into a bowl by the door, then the following days he eats some, as he walks past them.
On Sunday, there is a new television series about to begin. It’s called Game of Wool: Britain’s Best Knitter. Participants have to make individual and team items, clothing, jewellery and household items. It’s hosted by Olympic diver Tom Daley, who is a well-known knitter. I did see one of the items was a knitted deck chair, which looked very stretchy! I’m looking forward to this, lovely easy Sunday evening viewing.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/11/2025 16:34

Good morning everyone. 🙂
It was a nice Halloween here last night, but surprisingly not that busy where we were. Some of the houses we visited went all out with decorations (pic) and we carved a new pumpkin family as last week's went into the compost already. The kids had a good time, little one got scare a few times by the decorations (some were that well done) and people were even dressed ip to give out candy, some in their front yards and some at the door. It was all really nice. I took the dc out for dessert after then home for baths, something proper to eat and then we sorted candy. I took away the items I won't let them eat (chocking hazards, really sticky or hard to bite), but gave them some Hallowe'en candy I had bought (things like plain milk choc Dairy Milk, Aero) so they weren't losing out and I let each have a bag of chips. We watched Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin and a few more Peanuts cartoons then went to bed very late. It was all pretty good and I think we're on our way to some nice traditions.
