Pie is dine, brownies, too. 😅
Dick just went into the oven. Stuffed with orange, onion, garlic, ginger and onion. Chinese 5 spice rubbed all over. Now boiling broth with ginger and onion that I will make gravy from. Decided to boil duck first for 30 mins as was still too cold.

I was a tad concerned about the turn your culinary adventures were taking until I read the end of your post there, havoc. Are you cooking everything ahead of Thanksgiving or will you have some cooking to do on the day?

DD and I went out to do grocery shopping last evening and realised it was Homecoming weekend when we got stuck in a traffic jam on the way home. It was a lovely evening and the kids attending the dance were clearly ready for some energetic dancing - most of the girls were in shortish dresses with sneakers, and the boys in suits. DD revealed hitherto unsuspected details of shenanigans she and her friends had engaged in during their school days and at various school social dances, and we both had a good chuckle.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/10/2025 04:49

Math, do you mean the dick that went into the oven?! 😵‍💫🤦‍♀️😂 That was a typo! I cooked a duck. 🦆

Or, did you miss the typo? i managed to get it all done today. No rest, mind you... I skipped the carrots, though. We had enough.

@Mumtobabyhavoc We went out to a restaurant and I once said that I could just eat some dick, by mistake! I was 18 and my family never let me forget it. It's still mentioned 52 years later 😳

@MyrtleLion I found that my skin, especially face, got really dry in hospital, and I used a vitamin E moisturising spritz, which was lovely. Actually, it was 12 years ago and I'm still using the same one. Well, it's obviously a different bottle but the same make!

@HildaTablet gorgeous photo. This is one taken at the Barbara Hepworth Gallery in Doncaster a few years ago but I loved the colours of the trees.

@NCDailyGame I hope this thread helps you. 💐 I don't feel as lonely when I'm reading what other people are doing, because I rarely go out now. This week's highlight is a visit to the hospital tomorrow for a blood test. Next week it's my flu vaccine!

@sproutsandparsnips I admire your running ability. I can only manage a walk using my walking frame, across the room, or to the car!

I'm having surgery again this afternoon to clean the wound and maybe again in three days. I also need a PICC line for IV and blood tests because my veins can't cope with the cannulas.

I don't know what I'm having for dinner yet and I may be too tired to eat. DH won't be coming today as I'll be very tired.

Umanresources · 13/10/2025 16:16

@mathanxiety I’ve heard of Homecoming, from television programmes, but I don’t know who or what is coming home. Does every town have one, or is it to do with schools or colleges?

@Mumtobabyhavoc what flavour is that pie? It looks gorgeous.

@MyrtleLion hope your surgery goes well and you get some decent sleep. I could have done with some good earplugs for my daughter, when we went on holiday and shared a room, apparently my snoring kept her awake most nights!

I have an Ocado delivery this evening. My sister in law is coming for a couple of days in 2 days time, to celebrate my birthday, which is next week. I’ve ordered some lovely special meals, salmon en croute, potato gratins, broccoli, scallops, sea food, calamari, duck and salads. I realise I’m very much a pescatarian! Ooh and crème caramel and chocolate eclairs for dessert.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/10/2025 16:54

I've just looked over at Havoc's birthday photo wall and felt tears, so I'm going to distract myself with a post. 😊

Dinner went well yesterday! I was on my feet cooking all day, but everything turned out. The only fail was my duck gravy was too salty. I over salted the water when I boiled the duck and that was the base of my gravy. My friend said she like it though - she's a good friend. 🥰

We all got to bed around 10pm and were up around 7. Kids have had breakfast of left over pancakes, I had the last piece of panettone and an iced latte and put a load of laundry on which has just finished.

It is a gorgeous morning with blue sky, but was windy and just 4c when I got up so I put the heat on for the first time.

Uman, do you tire easily? What about an electric chair or scooter?
Myrtle, best wishes for the next surgery.
Math, do you see all your kids often? I think you mentioned one ds lives over the Appalachians?

@Umanresources, home coming weekend is a college and university thing in the US. They try to get the alumni to come back to visit. It's usually done the same weekend as an athletic event like a football game.

Havoc, I like a salty gravy.

We're riding out a costal storm, and have had 2 inches of rain since midnight. It's a holiday today (Columbus Day), so most things are closed anyway.

We're getting a bit more color.

Surgery was delayed till 8pm then cancelled. No new date yet.

I had beef casserole. It wasn't terrible but having been starved all day it takes time to stop feeling hungry so I'm eating haribo.

sproutsandparsnips · 13/10/2025 21:01

Had a lovely walk yesterday. Gently along canal.
Beautiful looking food @mumtobabyhavoc
Thank you @umanresources- I am very slow.

@Mumtobabyhavoc I’m on a waiting list for hip replacements, but I have to lose weight first. My hips are very painful and it’s recently it’s been difficult to put any weight on my right leg. It takes me a while to climb the stairs at night. In fact one night last week it took me over an hour to climb 13 steps to go to bed. It usually takes me an average of about half an hour. We really must look into a stairlift, but I have been holding back for that.

@sproutsandparsnips gorgeous pictures, beautiful countryside.

sproutsandparsnips · 13/10/2025 22:53

Fingers crossed for surgery date @MyrtleLion

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/10/2025 23:06

Oh, shit @MyrtleLion ! I hate being hungry. 😟
I'm sorry you got bumped.
@Umanresources that sounds miserable. I'm sorry.
Lovely pics @sprouts! I see you spotted mushrooms. I think we have those brownish ones. I've never seen that white cone-shaped one though!

Have just spent the past few hours enjoying the gorgeous, but chilly, weather. We did a big walk through the trees, around a soccer field and up and down some hills then a good bit of time at the playground. Kids didn't want to leave and I was starving and it was, "Buy Mummy I haven't played on this/that yet...." So there was lots of delay. Then baby crashed in the car as soon as I started driving. 😂 I made Havoc a banana milkshake (just a super ripe banana, bit of milk and vanilla froyo) and am just cuddling with both now. 🥰
Need to get moving and make something eat, though.

In my area, homecoming is a big high school event, very exciting for freshmen and sophomores because unlike senior prom, they can attend.

The local HS has its homecoming weekend at the end of a (school) 'spirit week' where accomplishments of current students/ teams/ clubs and alumni are recognized. There's a featured alum who receives an award at an assembly and gives a speech that is meant to be inspiring and engaging. Various musical and dance ensembles, the glee club, etc, perform at the assembly, along with cheerleaders and drill team. Generally speaking, the local HS homecoming weekend is held on one of the last home games for the (American) football team, though some schools prioritise basketball. A few decades ago there used to be a parade for homecoming here, but that tradition has been lost. The dance is a big thing, with the football game held on Friday night and the dance on Saturday night. There's sometimes a theme to the dance/ decor.

It may be that it's more of a southern and midwestern thing for high schools to have a big homecoming weekend.

Umanresources · 14/10/2025 06:48

@mathanxiety it all sounds very exciting and totally foreign to me. We have nothing like that at all. It's only the past few years that we have had proms. It has become quite the thing now, with parents hiring limos for their children to travel to school where they are meeting, before going on to another venue.
We've watched the sitcom The Middle, which is where we got most of our information about school and college life from.

MyrtleLion · 14/10/2025 14:29

Good news. They know which infection it is and in the best case scenario I will be here another week to 10 days, with 12 weeks' antibiotics.

There are other factors including being able to close the wound at the next surgery. If they can't close then I'll need more surgery and a few more weeks here.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/10/2025 16:33

Myrtle, good news, but Jeeezus. 😵‍💫 How are you feeling today? Sleep? Pain? Spirits?

It's sunny and 4c here at 8:39am. Having a slow start, but going to get dc to school. 🤞

OP posts:
MyrtleLion · 14/10/2025 18:56

It's hard to sleep because it's a busy ward. Observations, IV drugs, physiotherapists, rounds and visitors.

I sleep when I can because I'm woken every 6 hours for IV antibiotics which means waking again an hour later when it's finished.

I have very good pain relief and it's when I ask for it rather than every six hours. I will notice pain and ask, and mostly it's been more than six hours so I get it straight away.

My spirits have varied. I think they were very worried at first and they have now begun to relax more. They weren't telling me a lot and they didn't know what the plan was because they didn't know what the infection was. So now we have more of a plan and hopefully we can stick to it and I feel a lot better as a result.

Also my DH showed up today which was lovely. He doesn't come on days when I'm due to have an operation and I always feel better for seeing him.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/10/2025 21:07

Myrtle, it makes sense your dh doesn't visit on surgery days as you could be delayed going in/out and you'd be asleep or so groggy, plus all the checks on you by staff.
Glad you saw him today. 😊

Had the kids at school this morning. They played after lunch running up/down the hall 🙄 and then I saw baby decided to lie down on the floor, so I knew it was nap time. Changed diaper, parked Havoc in front of tv watching Sesame Street and am now cuddling baby who has just fallen asleep. 😇

Umanresources · 15/10/2025 12:19

@myrtle hope you are feeling less pain today. Must be a bad infection if they are not kicking you out of hospital soon. I'm glad you manage to get some sleep when you can. A woman in the bed opposite to mine used to sit the wrong way round at the foot of her bed, and watch her television which was on a swivel, so it shone into the room. She watched most of the night and it kept us awake. So selfish. Ignored the nurses when they asked her to turn it round. One day she had an operation and had a hole in her neck. She told the nurses that she was going outside for a cigarette with her partner who was there. They said she was supposed to stay in bed for at least 3 hours after the op and even got the surgeon to come and speak to her. She just kept arguing with them and they said they couldn't stop her but strongly advised her not to go. She went! Just so selfish. I think everyone on the ward had raised blood pressure after this.

@Mumtobabyhavoc How lovely that your two can tire themselves out like that. My daughter bought me a digital picture frame which has hundreds of photos and videos on it. I, and others, add to it regularly. I put lots of my children on it, when they were young and babies. The display changes every 30 seconds and it's wonderful to be reminded of them as children. It seems so long ago, but also like yesterday. Technology can be wonderful.
My sister in law is on her way here at the moment so I'm looking forward to that. We have such a fun time when she is here. It's non stop laughing. Unfortunately she's only here for a couple of days, but she's coming back in December. She helps me with some cleaning jobs that I can't manage. She loves decluttering, which is fine by me and a lot of the time she will rehouse my cast off art and craft items, which is fine by me. Love her to bits!

MyrtleLion · 15/10/2025 14:36

The operation will be on Friday. All being well, I hope to go home at the end of next week.

EllaDisenchanted · 15/10/2025 17:10

We’ve just finished the period of all the high holidays. I’m so so done with cooking for a while 😬 pasta and baked potatoes it is for everyone for the foreseeable 😄 Kids went back to school today 🎉 I’m ready for routine
DH went to the UK to visit to his family today as well so I’m going to family for Shabbat.
Tentative ceasefire here, and a lot of relief that the living hostages are home ❤️ I’ve managed to convince my youngest that she can sleep in her own room tonight because there won’t be any sirens. I suspect I’ll find her in my room in a few hours anyway 🤦‍♀️
