4.24am, sitting in chairs. No sleep. No bed available yet. It's been their busiest Monday in weeks. Sore bum from sitting but fewer patients so I can sit with my leg up on another chair and someone brought me a pillow for my back.

They are also charging my phone because I am the patient who has waited the longest and I brought a plug and cable. I almost certainly won't be having surgery today (Tuesday). So I'm likely to be here till Friday or longer. I'll miss my flu jab appointment on Saturday if that's the case.

HildaTablet · 07/10/2025 09:35

@MyrtleLion this is terrible 😢

OrangeCrushes · 07/10/2025 10:44

@MyrtleLion I'm so sorry. Hang in there Flowers

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/10/2025 17:01

@MyrtleLion that sounds so uncomfortable. It's just not acceptable to expect someone who's not well to sit up for so long. It happens here, too.

Not much sleep here either, but obv more comfortable. DC finally fell asleep around 10p and me at midnight and awake around 6:30am. Had a pot of steel cut oats bubbling away by 7 and now kids have been fed and I'm on my 2nd latte. I've been doing a bit of home school with the kids the past month with a Kindergarten curriculum book with Havoc and various education vids on YT. It's just 30-60mins in the morning depending on how long the attention spans are. Baby follows along, too. 🥰 Then it's 2 days a week at the elementary school for both kids for a morning pre-school program that's parent participation. So, that's keeping me busy. 😅

It's sunny, but starting to get cloudy and rain is supposed to start tomorrow. My plan is to get the kids out for a nature walk, then Old Navy to pick up an order, book store for a gift for my mum, lunch at some point and put away laundry still hanging up in bathroom and on drying rack then pack up old baby clothes for donation.

Stay dry, Math.
You're on fire, Miss.
Welcome @OrangeCrushes

Ah so sorry about the turn of events @MyrtleLion- hope you get some relief soon!
you re doing a fab job @MissConductUS!
Hope you are ok @bizzeyand @Deathraystare

MyrtleLion · 08/10/2025 01:08

Thank you everyone. I had to wait 18 hours before I had a bed at 7am. I'm now on a ward for at least a week. I have a fancy negative pressure dressing, which drains the wound. It means it's harder for bacteria to get into the wound.

But it's going to be a long road of more than 6 weeks before it fully heals.

mathanxiety · 08/10/2025 01:43

You must be exhausted, Myrtle. I hope they're taking good care of you.

I made veggie and chicken soup for dinner tonight. It's nice to finally have the sort of weather that makes soups and stews a possibility.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/10/2025 02:11

@MyrtleLion what a relief you are finally in a bed. 🤗
I hope you can get some much needed rest and something decent to eat. I think you deserve cake/pie/ice cream and a nice meal. 💕

Had a full day with dc. Took them out to the Richmond Nature Preserve. We played at the playground, walked through a few trails, went into the main building and checked out the displays (the current exhibit is about wild mushrooms/fungus) and watched various birds. After that we went into Steveston to look at the fishing boats and have fish and chips for lunch at Pajo's. Lunch was so disappointing! $24 for 2 pieces salmon with chips that was warm, not hot, and very greasy. It was fine with the kids as they're not particularly discerning yet, but I wouldn't go back. I didn't complain as it was a late lunch and not worth making the kids wait for a replacement. After that it was off to a mall, bought my mum a book and tried on pj's for the dc and exchanged my online order. Also did a bit of a shop around Winners then we had all hit the wall and I'm now making dinner. Sautéing prawns, red bell peper and asparagus snd adding feta and pasta. Similar to last night's dinner. Fast.

Myrtle, an 18-year-old waiting for a bed, is unconscionable. I'm sorry your post op is so rough. Fingers crossed for no more setbacks.

Math, it is getting to be stew weather. We have a frost warning for Thursday night. I have a few plants I'll have to bring in.

DS has signed a lease for his own flat, so the day has finally come when he'll be moving out. He takes possession on November 1st, but I expect he'll be back and forth for a while. He needs everything - furniture, dishes, a television set, etc. We'll help him with the costs. We bought him a new bed last year, which we'd like him to leave so that we can have his room as a guest room and he can stay over if he comes to visit on the weekends. His new place is about 45 minutes away, so not terribly far. We'll miss him, but he's almost 26 and has been living with us since he graduated from university in 2022, so it's quite understandable that he wants his own place. Once he has a floor plan and measurements, we'll take him furniture shopping.

The fall colors are just starting to come out. It was such a dry late summer, I'm afraid we'll lose the leaves early this year.

I was out walking this afternoon when I looked down and spotted this creature. It's one of the same frog species that we often see on our deck, which can change color to blend in with the surface it's on. He's doing a fine job of blending into the asphalt road surface.

Miss, that frog blends right in!
Myrtle, how has today been? Anything decent to eat?

Miss good luck with the move, that's a big change for you all! We had DH's niece living with us for the last couple of years, she moved out to start national service in September, although she came back home to us for the high holy days and Sukkot (with 1-2 friends each time), and has an open invitation for Shabbat (Sabbath). Certainly a change.
We are part way through the Sukkot festival now; it's an odd day because outside of Israel they observe 2 days of 'yom tov' at the start of Sukkot, where they are all offline, and it's kind of like Shabbat, but in Israel you only do one day like that. So I am online, and took the kids out cycling in a local park, but our family outside of Israel are out of contact until nightfall wherever they are.
Havoc It was pretty hot here today, although it is predicted to rain tomorrow. Quite excited for rain 🙂

MyrtleLion · 09/10/2025 13:33

The food isn't terrible but isn't what I normally eat. My DH brings in omelettes so I have my usual breakfast. The coffee is great but one tiny cup at 8am then maybe another if I ask later.

I'm probably having surgery tomorrow and then staying for IV antibiotics for at least a week, probably longer.

I’m so pleased you got a bed at last. I had one of those dressings when I had sepsis. They are absolutely brilliant, and really do help with healing.

HildaTablet · 09/10/2025 15:22

Here’s hoping you get through it quickly and out the other side with good healing, @MyrtleLion 🤞🤞

DH hasn’t been well recently and had an MRI a couple of days ago (private, because the NHS one, though scheduled, wasn’t for another month and he really needed the results quickly). Fortunately, it was good news so we’re agreed it was worth the extra money (it’s nothing life-threatening but something painful and would have needed prompt treatment if there had been a problem).

We’ve just come back from having coffee and the leaf colours in the park are beautiful. We’ve been told it’s likely to be a bumper year for foliage here too. I took a quick shot but this doesn’t really do justice to the colours, and it’s a bit dull today.

Myrtle, the simple comforts of home are priceless, aren't they? Is home far away? Is you dh able to stay for a visit? Are you getting decent sleep?
Hilda, gorgeous pic. I was admiring some lovely red leaves on some trees here just the other day.

Rainy day here and 11c.

Edited baby's post. 🤦‍♀️

Had dc at school this morning, got home and made lunch, now having a latte and a generous slice of panettone. Kids are a bit squirrelly, so have separated them with Havoc in bed for a nap. 🤞

Oh I do love the autumn colours!
Is it call Fall in the Americas because the leaves fall?
just about to head off for a run, will try and go where the most trees are to admire the colours.
Glad you have a bed @MyrtleLion
Once more admiring your energy @Mumtobabyhavoc
Loving that toad @MissConductUS

MyrtleLion · 11/10/2025 17:05

I have a bed and I'm here until at least next Friday.

I had an operation yesterday to clean out the wound and close some of it and I'm now on two different types of IV antibiotics. They took swabs and will grow cultures so that they can target the infection with the correct antibiotics. It will take up to a week for them to grow. Hopefully I'll be home the week of the 20 October, but it may be longer than that.

I miss my tea most of all. I drink black cardamom tea and I make it in a small one person teapot that sits on a teacup. Unfortunately I can't make drinks and I don't want to risk breaking the pot. The tea and coffee comes in paper cups so making my tea in a paper cup won't taste the same. Fortunately the coffee is actually excellent. I was expecting instant coffee and boiling water but it's a good filter coffee. Though I get one cup at breakfast and one at lunch. I can ask for more but they are very busy.

The food isn't bad, but all the vegetables are boiled to death. Breakfast is at 7.45, lunch at noon and dinner at 5pm.

I'm woken up to have drugs or disconnect drugs or by other patients and their call bells, but I've just bought some Loop Dream earplugs which will hopefully block out most sound.

It is very overwhelming and not very private. My DH comes most days as he's 45 minutes drive away and he brings in the omelettes we normally have for breakfast as they only offer cereal and toast. That is helping enormously.

I have plenty to distract me with my iPad that I can watch TV on, and I listen to audiobooks and I knit. They have free WiFi.

So I don't want to be here and it's a huge setback having such a deep infection, but I'm trying to make the best of it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/10/2025 19:23

Good morning everyone. ☔️🌧️ 12c

Sprouts, I was curious, too! 🤓 Google AI says:

Autumn is called "fall" because it is a shortening of the 16th-century English phrase "fall of the leaf," referring to leaves falling from trees in the season. This was a poetic and descriptive alternative to the more formal term "autumn," which comes from the Latin word "autumnus". There are a few essays with further details, but that should suffice. 😂
How was your run? I used to run a lot, but haven't since dc. I now have knee pain which I need to address. 😕

Myrtle, it might sound a bit crazy, but it helps to imagine you are on vacation with the luxury of sleeping in and lounging all day. Do ask for extra coffee! The nurses will oblige when they have a minute. If there is a special chocolate or biscuit you like ask your dh to bring it for you. Get a small travel size of hand cream, face cream, what ever you like as well. I also recommend an eye mask to block light. Pop your ear buds in and listen to waves crashing on the beach. Just some thoughts. I know it's not the best. I'm glad you had the surgery, though! 🩷🩷🩷
When my mum was in hospital (several weeks after one surgery) we'd joke with the nurses: Sorry, we're still waiting for our Champagne; Sorry, I ordered the beef Wellington; and Our compliments to the Chef! it was nice to have a laugh, at least (especially since it was touch and go for her). 😊

@Mumtobabyhavoci enjoy my running but I do have some niggling knee pains. This means I only run twice a week now as need to recover but this morning I saw lots of pretty berries and leaves which made my soul happy!
@MyrtleLionchin up, sending best wishes……

mathanxiety · 11/10/2025 23:26

Myrtle I hope they'll be able to get you back on your feet asap. It's nice that the coffee is decent - one thing to be thankful for at least.

I'm having a lazy Saturday afternoon after lugging in most of my plants from the deck and setting them up in my south facing windows, and giving the kitchen a thorough once over. I'm planning to watch Apollo 13 on Netflix tonight after doing the weekly shop.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/10/2025 23:31

It's such a good feeling, isn't it Sprouts. Cold morning runs were my favourite. I did a few up north in -20c that were exhilarating and I loved going for a run when traveling/holidaying. Running in the desert in Las Vegas was fun. Although, I kept my eye out for snakes, spiders and scorpions...😵‍💫

Just sharing a slice of panettone and an apple with Havoc. Baby is napping. Large load of towels and the bathtub mat washed and bleached. Have got Stuart 2 on. Rain has stopped.

OP posts:
MyrtleLion · 12/10/2025 09:14

The pump that takes away the gunk is running on empty because there isn't any gunk to come out. This is a good sign and the doctor was smiling so progress is being made.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/10/2025 19:15

Myrtle, that's moving in the right direction! I wish I coyld bring you dinner today!

Breakfast was choc chip pancakes with maple syrup and strawberries, orange juice snd coffee. Have got dc parked watching a 2nd movie.

Just making the dressing now. Chopped up a baguette, tossed with evoo, salt and garlic powder then popped into the oven to brown. Chopped some red onion and cooked down in butter. Added chopped apple and a handful of cranberries to bowl with croutons and onion/butter mix. Will add a bit of Chinese 5 spice and salt again if needed. Will go into casserole dish to bake. Once the duck is cooked I will drizzle over some of the drippings then heat again for serving.
