Posted 3 postcards while on holiday.
Thought we had been scammed by putting them in the wrong post box

They all turned up 2 days ago !

😅

The bus strike has been cancelled so I can go for my test on Thursday.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/09/2025 02:54

Ella, you've promoted me to poke around my garden and pick some of the tomatoes. I also promised some sage and spearmint for a neighbour.
Welcome back Bizzey. I hope you are ok. 🩷

Hello and a wave 👋 to everyone else. I've gotta put my phone down. Contacts are drying out. 🙄
Might take Havoc for a swim. Busy day: took mum to medical appt (with kids in tow) and dc to playground. Both kids are asleep. My mum has pointed out they'll be awake all night now having fallen asleep around 4 for Havoc and 6 for baby. I know I should wake them, but, honestly, the quiet is so welcome. Have been struggling with Havoc for a while.

DH drove me to our local restaurant by the river for our anniversary yesterday. The food and wine were excellent (as always), and I then slowly walked back the 300m to the house on crutches.

I had a couple of stops, and we had brought a cushion to prop up my leg so I leant on that on a windowsill a couple of times. It was probably too far to walk as I’m quite sore this morning, but it was nice to get out.

We then had a bottle of wine at home and DH managed to spill my glass over my clean white trousers. Fortunately my cleaning instructions were clear, and we keep kitchen roll in the living room, so I took them off, put kitchen roll under the stain inside the trousers, and DH went downstairs and sprayed a lot of Vanish on them. He will wash them later, but says they already look clean, no wine stains and he has sprayed them with Vanish again. Hats off to my best friend’s daughter for the tip.

MissConductUS · 03/09/2025 14:28

Welcome, @CharlotteCChapel, and thanks for sharing your public transportation news. A canceled strike sounds like very good news.

Havoc, those periods of quiet are indeed golden. Did you get Havoc out for a swim?

Myrtle, happy anniversary! It sounds like you had a lovely night out to celebrate, other than the wine spilled on your trousers. It's good that you're staying moving.

I feel pretty normal this morning, so hopefully I've seen the back end of this covid infection. I'm sure I'd still be poorly if I hadn't taken the Paxlovid.

The construction around the reservoir has moved to another area, and I've seen some turtles come back.

@Mumtobabyhavocthere is nothing better than quiet, especially when kids are young!
@HelenaJustinalovely to hear from you.
@MissConductUSglad you are feeling better. Paxlovid is not routinely available here unless very vulnerable. As a HCP I don’t actually know how to access it for my patients!
@bizzeyhope the stress eases off soon and good to hear from you!
Thinking of @Deathraystareand hoping the home situation is improving.
Back to school for DS2 - he’s on a mission to improve his grades and is talking to his teachers about getting the best marks he can. He is very determined to be fair. From a relaxing summer to full on school, gym, rugby training, homework and revision!
Meanwhile DS1 is very relaxed prior to going to uni whilst I have been out buying and scouring the house to get rid of essentials for him…….
He has a bit of work before he goes, but leading a rather leisurely life. In fairness he is doing all the household chores I’ve asked him to do- good practice!
DS2 and I are running a 10k in a couple of weeks and went for a run together, I think we are about the same pace, but I’m not really looking forward to it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/09/2025 22:26

Wildfire smoke has moved in quite a bit. 😢
I'm glad I had dc outside at the playground yesterday.
Havoc was asleep around 11:30 and Havoc by 12:30am. We were all up by 8am. Hoping to get them to bed much, much earlier tonight. No naps yet 🤷‍♀️ so they should be ready to crash after supper.

The peach pie I made last night turned out okay. Needs more sugar and the crust is a bit thick, but not tough. Not the prettiest, but not bad ovetall for winging it while simultaneously making dinner and dealing with kids running around.

PS

Sprouts, sounds like your dc are doing well. ☺️ Paxlovid isn't common here, either. As a HCP you might be interested in our protocol. I haven't done a 10k in ages, but in a previous life ran in the Sun Run a few times. Good luck to you. Just stick to your pace and enjoy it. ☺️

I've also been wondering about @Deathraystare
and hope she checks in.

Miss, what kinds of turtles do you have there? We have ones with white stripes on their necks. I don't know a thing about them and didn't even know we had turtles here! 🫣🤫🫢 Glad you are feeling better!!!! Were your taste or smell affected?
Didn't get swimming, but still mulling it over...🙄
especially since I don't want the kids running around outside now.

Am a bit worn out managing the kids and doing some medical admin for my mum. Still need to go out to garden, too.

Ooh @Mumtobabyhavoc that peach pie looks delicious. I’ve never had pie, but I’ve had peach crumble. I’m craving that now, hot pie or crumble with ice cream!
My OH made dinner tonight; bolognaise sauce, with shells, so good (he follows my recipe 😋). No room for dessert though.
My DD got back from Lisbon today. She stayed at my son’s apartment with som3 friends. Son and family were on holiday in the Azores. We have been so upset to see the crashed funicular in Lisbon. We have been on that form of transport quite a few times.
My grandson video called me a couple of times while they were away. The first time was to show me the restaurant where they had just eaten and then to take me outside to show me the beach. It was very dark, so I couldn’t see much, so he just told me what they had been doing and plans for the next day. He then called me another day to show me the hotel room and the balcony. I had a lovely view of the sea and the swimming pool, so he chatted away to me there.
@MyrtleLion well done to your husband for getting the stain out. I buy Napisan, which is brilliant for removing stains as well. I’m allergic to lots of soap powders and Napisan is non-biological which is better for my sensitive skin. It brings up my tea towels beautifully white, getting rid of tomato sauce and turmeric/curry stains.
@sproutsandparsnips how do you feel about your DS going to uni? I was fine until it was time for us to leave him and go home. I burst into tears and cried all the way home. I had visions of him sitting on his bed all alone, but he’d made friends with another student in the next room almost as soon as we had left. When my daughter was going, I cried all the way there and then all night in the hotel we stayed at, then all the way home.
@MissConductUS hope your Covid is receding now. It’s still around then.
Hope @Deathraystare comes back soon to update us.
I’ve been busy making bookmarks to add to people’s Christmas presents this year. I’m trying to tailor them to their hobbies and interests and I’m doing some watercolour paintings on them.

mathanxiety · 04/09/2025 03:21

That's a lovely idea for Christmas presents, Uman. As usual around the beginning of September I'm horrified that we are getting so close to Christmas.

It's a little on the chilly side tonight. I moved two of my deck plants away from an exposed corner of my deck and closer to the wall of the building. Tomorrow I'll move them back.

DD decided to make muffins so I'll no doubt wake to a sink full of baking accoutrements in the morning.

Getting my boxer puppy in 14 days after my pet loss

MissConductUS · 04/09/2025 15:40

Welcome, @itsonlyjoan, and thanks for joining us to share your news. Congratulations on the imminent arrival of your new puppy! But I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your previous pet, who I presume was also a boxer.

Sprouts, our rx'ing guidelines for Paxlovid are similar to the Canadian ones Havoc linked to. Indications are over 65 years old or a clinically relevant comorbidity. It works a treat and the only side effect I noticed was a dry mouth. How exciting that your DS is heading off to uni. Our son went first, then a year later our daughter left for uni and we had three years as empty nesters.

Math, when our DS makes anything in the kitchen it looks like a bomb went off when he's done. The concept of cleaning as you go has not taken hold yet.

Miss, how are you confirming Covid? I'm curious because the tests seem inaccurate now for new strains, not to mention harder to find. They were previously available for free at pharmacies (last year as well).

Miss, how are you confirming Covid? I'm curious because the tests seem inaccurate now for new strains, not to mention harder to find. They were previously available for free at pharmacies (last year as well).

If you have a home test that was manufactured recently it should work fine. The current variant is called Status, which is part of the omicron variant family.

www.today.com/health/coronavirus/stratus-covid-variant-symptoms-rcna224723

Last year the government was mailing out free tests for a short period of time, but no more. The tests are available at any pharmacy. I just ordered some new ones on Amazon. They're about 14 USD for a two test kit.

Given that my symptoms were consistent with covid and I've had it before, my doctor didn't have an issue rx'ing Paxlovid based on a positive home test.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/09/2025 20:26

Miss, your GP sounds very pro-active. I've found that testing is so hit and miss when it's obv been Covid. The timing of the test is crucial, but even then you can be very sick with very little virus and not get a positive. (Fwiw I think this has contributed to Covid skepticism)
Glad you got Paxlovid and that it helped.

I hope you feel better soon, Miss.

DH was told by the pharmacy that they won’t sell him any more cocodamol because I’ve been taking it too long. This is what happens when I was sent home without proper pain relief.

I will create a request tomorrow morning with my GP and hopefully they will prescribe something - maybe stronger than 8mg codeine.

Physiotherapy appointment on Tuesday.

sueelleker · 04/09/2025 22:22

You can get two strengths on prescription; 15mg/500mg and 30mg/500mg/

I should have been given a supply of 30/500 as I was prescribed following breaking my ankle, but I was given a tiny supply of morphine to take 2.5ml. Even the patient information leaflet said the minimum dose was 5-10ml.

What’s more, I can’t take ibuprofen or aspirin, which would reduce the swelling, so I have pain from that as well as the placing of three screws in my ankle to fuse the joint.

It has been a difficult experience.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/09/2025 02:47

I hope you get some relief Myrtle.

We have had a lot of wildfire smoke, so I've kept the kids inside the last few days. They were getting squirrelly, so, thinking outside the box, I took them to the airport (YVR) two nights ago. It cost me $30 in parking fees 😤but the kids had a lot of fun running around and exploring. It was evening, so not busy, or I wouldn't have done it. Also, saw the gorgeous red moon the past two nights again. We just got rain, so won't likely see the moon completely full and red again tonight.

Hi, Death! Nope. Haven't seen any posts from you in a while.

Oh dear @Mumtobabyhavoc I wonder what happened to it

Basically still sofa surfing but a bit of hope on the horizon I think. An organisation has put me in touch with another organisation who zdeal with landlords. The other organisation are in a church and dole out free meals. I went once and the food is lovely . They also hand you a takeaway of the same stuff for later. Although I realised this it it was brought home to me how hard some people's lives are. They also had an assortment of warm coats they were giving away. It is good to know these places exizßt. I. Reckoned they would all disappear with the savage cuts.

I am also allowed free membership of a gym and have mAde good use of it. I was so unfit. My first class was yoga. I thought it would be best but I do not like it. I was so stiff and by the time I got from lying down to sitting up they were three exercises ahead!

I don't know if I have had a mini stroke or just my balance is off. I cannot even star jump. Cannot seem to move my lags as well as my arms or get my legs up too high. I did rebounding yesterday on a small trampoline. I liked it bit it felt weird beingg off the grounds by a few inches. I did Zumba too but could only dad danc( I know things can only improve. I am going to physio soon.

I will have to go to Primark for some trainers soon as mine have more holes than swiss cheese! I did have. A look in a charity shop but they only had shoes with heels.

I am slowly reading through everyone's posts. I got in a right muddle at the library because although there are lights they do not show yo the keyboard and although I can touch type I still make mistakes but cannot correct as I can't see the curspr!

Thanks all for your kind thougtß

MyrtleLion · 07/09/2025 12:07

That sounds really positive, Deathray. I hope your support increases.

Your body is dealing with a lot of stress and sofa surfing is not conducive to feeling strong and natural in your own body. You can't stretch out or be really comfortable. If you have a GP, can you get a full body check up?

It's great that you're being more active and I wouldn't worry about not keeping up.

My GP prescribed 30/500 cocodamol without question, so I'm feeling much better.

Deathraystare · 07/09/2025 16:19

Thanks @MyrtleLion . Actually. Fthe ladies I see at the gym are very nice and have b3en encouraging and the people. Taking the classes give me alterative workouts. One of them suggested I do not come. Everyday as it would be too much and she showed me some gym equipment I could alternate. I prefer the dancer classes!. At the moment it is my left knee that is painful and my right arm hurts a bit but I used a cross trainer for the first time today so may have hurt it then I don't take any painkillers as I am only allowed paracetamol and anyway I take enough pills! I am glad you got your pills though. Obvs we only take them when we need them. We are not all junkies! I was supposed to be on Ozempic but rarely got it. That was for my diabetes type 2 but since the world and her pet dog takes it to lose a few pounds....

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/09/2025 17:25

Oh, Death. I'm so sorry you still don't have your own place. That must be terribly stressful. How did you lose your last place?
it's good you are getting out to be active, though. All you can do is your best for that which you have control over. Sending you positive vibes. 🩷

Have had a sore throat and irritated sinuses for a few days and it's worse today. I've been thinking it's due to the wildfire smoke, but it might also be a cold. I've been doing sinus rinses and drinking a lot of water.

Put together a simple breakfast of fruit (strawberries, grapes and figs), cheese (Swiss and Cheddar) and bagels with pb (pb&j on mine). Also had the ubiquitous iced cafe latte.
