Am I the only one. Having trouble with my phone's keyboard. If I have to type an s I get that German letter coming up and every time I have to put in my phone number or a numerical code I get tiny numbers. I think it is called superscript?? Also I keep getting numbers instead of numbers! I can easily change the keyboard over to numbers should I need to do why does it insist on doing it for me???

Deathraystare · 07/09/2025 17:40

Numbers. Instead of letters (duh).

MissConductUS · 07/09/2025 18:27

So good to see you again, Deathray, and I'm glad you have found some additional support. The keyboard issue sounds like you've somehow changed the language setting on the phone.

Havoc, that does sound like irritation from the wildfire smoke. I had something similar earlier this summer when we had a lot of smoke coming in from Canada.

Things are pretty quiet here. I can't get my head around the fact that I'm just a few weeks away from retirement. I've signed up as a volunteer at our local SPCA and have an online orientation scheduled with them in early October.

We had a visit from the turkeys this morning. There were quite a few more on the other side of the stone wall.

Air quality has improved here a lot now after the short rain late yesterday afternoon and a bit of wind now. It's still humid now, though. I've got the windows open snd the fans on in each room. I've just done another sinus rinse. I've put Havoc down for a nap and a massive tantrum is occurring. Baby has put on last year's Christmas pj's saying, "I need them, mummy." 🤷‍♀️🩷

I have two Amazon packages to open and would like to do a bit of wall repair and painting in the kitchen. We shall see.

Love the turkeys @MissConductUS !
@Mumtobabyhavoc that must be a bit stressful to have them so close.
First weekend of the season this weekend, a one point loss and 60 portions of curry cooked……

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/09/2025 21:54

Sprouts, it looks like the closet fire is about 60-90 mins away at Cultus Lake. Cultus is a major summer recreation destination here. Info us that it started from a presumed lightening strike Aug 30, is at almost 800 ha in size and out of control. I'm not concerned it would burn all the way here, but the smoke if the wind shifts again is intolerable. Fires get worse every year here now and it's been about 10 years that I can recall we've had major yearly issues.

Schools are all back and sports have started in the local high school. The first home varsity football game was last Friday night. It was lovely to hear the cheers and the band, though traffic was a mess.

Deathray sending good wishes for your housing situation. I really hope you'll hear good news soon.
The gym offerings sound attractive, and I'm glad people there have been helpful. Your yoga experience echoes my own with pilates many years ago. I did not sign up for a second course.

havoc I hope the fire will be contained. The smoke can't be good for anyone and it's a huge shame to see destruction of the natural environment. Even though vegetation will return, it takes a while, and meanwhile there can be landslides, and animal life is badly affected.

Lovely turkey photos, MissC. It will definitely feel odd not to head out to work when your retirement begins, if the experience of several of my friends is anything to go by. One of them started small with a limited volunteering role and now runs three local organisations. She's never home. Possibly not the direction you want to go...

myrtle very glad to hear you have better pain relief. I don't know how you made it this far without enough.

myrtle very glad to hear you have better pain relief. I don't know how you made it this far without enough.

I can't tolerate paracetamol as it doesn't work for me (or about 80% of the population, goodness knows why anyone takes it). So when I was a child with a headache or stomach ache I didn't take anything and got used to the pain. My parents didn't give me aspirin or ibuprofen, which are highly effective for me.

As a result I can tolerate quite a lot of pain, but I was waking a lot in the night. I think I had an attitude that I could bear it for a bit then I could think about it. A bit like the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt bearing something for 10 seconds then doing it again for another 10 seconds.

The big difference has been my ability to sleep for longer periods, so I'm grateful I have decent pain relief now.

sproutsandparsnips · 08/09/2025 21:25

Sorry @Deathraystare i forgot to say - good to hear from you and I really hope this is a positive step in the right direction.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/09/2025 01:43

I'm nursing baby in the bedroom and Havoc just opened the door to tell me, Mummy, grandma is eating all the watermelon and it's supposed to be for all of us.
🙄 (there were two cubes left on the plate)
I reassured Havoc there is more in the fridge. 🏆

Ordered Havoc's birthday cake from Whole Foods. Bought a piece of a new cake there, chocolate with fig jam and butter cream. It was very good, but a bit rich.

Ordered the chocolate Oreo cake, which Havoc had last year and wanted again. I remember it as a bit on the sweet side, but it's not my birthday. 🙂
Had a lovely simple early dinner of rotisserie chicken on sourdough, watermelon and cherry tomatoes. Then made some penne for the kids and tossed it in butter. Not gourmet, but they love it.

Took dc to Horseshoe Bay to play at the playground and watch the ferries last night. Also saw the gorgeous waning gibbous moon which was low and close last night.

Lovely pics, Havoc. Mountain views are always inspiring.

I'm having a lovely work from home day. My replacement at work has hinted that I don't need to be in the office all of the time. That's fair, she's been in place for a bit over a month now, and it is a bit awkward for both of us to be there when something comes up.

I've just done a two mile walk around the neighborhood and had some fruit, yogurt and a ciabatta roll for lunch.

The turkeys were back yesterday.

Stunning scenery, havoc. I missed the spectacular moon we've had.

Looks like you're having a spell of nice late summer weather, MissC. We are downright hot here again, but with pleasant night time temps.

Pleased to report the hummingbirds haven't left yet.

Deathraystare · 12/09/2025 10:39

Lpvely pictures.

Re The moon is it a Hunters Moon? There was anot

@Mumtobabyhavoc her word in my brain but it is not there now! Oh! Harvest Moon? Probably neither!!.

@Mumtobabyhavoc
Horseshoe bay sounds lovely.

@MissConductUS

Glad to see the turkeys back.

Deathraystare · 12/09/2025 10:42

@MyrtleLion

When I was very young and suffered from Stills disease (Juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis) I was given aspirin in a huge bottle and they had coloured the pills red!!! Obvs mum doled them out to me so I did not think they were sweeties!!

Deathraystare · 12/09/2025 10:46

Hi @sproutsandparsnips

I had to cancel a meeting with a charity that deals with homelessness yesterday but am goiing next Thursday, I hope the trains are running otherwise it will take me 3 buses to get to Islington!!!

sproutsandparsnips · 13/09/2025 20:46

Good luck @Deathraystare!
DS and I are running a 10k (our first and possibly my last!) tomorrow. The weather forecast is for heavy rain, so I am quite worried. Not sure how it will feel.

I'm guessing you are at the start line or thereabouts. Have a good run! 🏃‍♀️

Good luck with your housing meeting, @Deathraystare.

sprouts, I'm impressed with your 10k. That's six miles. 3-4 miles was always my limit when I was running. Walking is more my speed these days.

I got my flu jab on Friday. I skipped the covid booster, of course, just having had covid. I should be swimming in antibodies at this point. I may get one in January.

I applied on line for my Social Security retirement benefits. I have to mail in some information as well. With a bit of luck I'll get my first payment in November.

sproutsandparsnips · 14/09/2025 20:36

Thank you @Mumtobabyhavoc@MissConductUS
All went well. The rain was torrential but held off until the last few minutes. Happy we completed, ran the whole way and didn’t finish last - 3715th and 3716th out of 3908! Quite stiff and sore now though!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/09/2025 22:43

Did a quick harvest in the garden in the rain. ☔️
Glad you had a good run @sproutsandparsnips 🤗
Have got dough proofing. Making pesto pizza for dinner.

Good luck @Deathraystare with your meeting, hope things start to change for the better for you.

@Mumtobabyhavoc Horseshoe bay looks gorgeous. So do those cakes. I don’t have a sweet tooth but I could make an exception for them!

@sproutsandparsnips well done on your run. I’m very impressed. I’m just about able to stumble from one side of the room to the other, with my walker.

@MissConductUS I got my invitation to get my flu jab from the doctor’s surgery, I just have to make an appointment. My OH and I usually go to the local pharmacy, but they are only doing them from October.

My DS-I-L has been staying at her daughter’s house for a week, which is about a 40 minute drive from us. Yesterday she brought her granddaughter here, we’ve not seen her for a couple of years, so it was lovely seeing them. However it took 3 hours as there were road works most of the way.

mathanxiety · 15/09/2025 04:34

Sending good wishes, Deathraystare.

We had a warm weekend here. One of my DDs was in town for a wedding, and it was great to see her. We ordered lunch from a local Chinese restaurant. I'm definitely going to try to recreate the delicious cucumber salad.
