Went away for a few days with DH and the kids, to an apartment further south of us. It was pretty hot! 41c yesterday 🥵 happy to be back home in slightly cooler temps (low 30s). Now have to do all the crazy pre school starting shopping, as the teachers only send out the supplies list the week before school starts
got to catch up with work, and may have just signed up for a training course for work as well, plus I’m going away with my grandmother next week! Our niece who lives with us is moving out so been packing her up as well and will need to help her move later in the week. Feeling a little overwhelmed to say the least 😄
Pics are of the desert we drove through there and back

Math, I still see hummingbirds around here. It's odd yours have disappeared in August.

Havoc, you should write a children's book about all of the adventures you have with your little ones. You already have the illustrations.

Ella, you certainly have been busy. Lovely desert pictures. I think you win the prize for the hottest location of anyone on the thread.

My podcast feed has been greatly diminished by the bank holiday today in the UK. One podcast from the Economist I listen to had a story last week about a town in England that sponsors snail races as part of it's summer fete. I thought that was really good fun, and a perfect illustration as to why Brits are sometimes considered slightly eccentric.

I finally have a new turtle picture to share. I saw this fellow swimming well away from the area under construction. It's good to know that they're still in the reservoir.

We've come back from holidays and I've got Covid. Not looking forward to being up early tomorrow as I'm back in work. I'm mostly fine, and out of infection limits, but very tired still and very itchy spots which are making sleeping intermittent.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/08/2025 22:30

Very itchy spots sounds suspicious @MargaretThursday Are you sure not chicken pox or measles? Both can present differently in adults.
Miss, smiled at the book idea. Thank you for the turtle pic!
Ella, that heat is awful. How long did it take you to get used to it after moving? Lovely pics. 😍

I think I'm off to the beach... update later. 🙄

I've had both chicken pox, and measles and while we're at it shingles as well (and it's not where I get shingles)

It's not presenting like monkey pox either.

According to Google, a rash is an uncommon but not unheard of side effect of covid.

mathanxiety · 26/08/2025 03:04

Get well soon, MargaretThursday. Can you call in sick?

MissC our weather has taken a very pleasant and much cooler turn, with nighttime lows in the low 50s, so they may have departed. I'm going to refill the feeder all the same, and see what happens.
A gorgeous turtle photo - it looks like an underwater scene.

I've been sneezing since I got home from work and it's got to the point where I know it's not ragweed allergy. I'm going to head to bed early after a glass of Alka Seltzer cold relief. Currently watching a Britbox documentary on Winston Churchill during WW1.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/08/2025 04:05

Oh, God @MargaretThursday I didn't know about that one. I/we've had covid (and mostly badly) about 6 or 7 times now. It's such an unpredictable virus. I hope you feel better soon. 💐
Not you, too @mathanxiety 🤦‍♀️

Took Havoc to a favourite little beach in West Van, Dundarave this afternoon.

So sorry to hear about Covid and spots. I hope you feel better soon.

I went downstairs on Sunday and then outside yesterday to sit in the sun. It was my first change of scenery for 10 days - don’t worry, I have a bedroom, bathroom and living room with a big TV, so I’ve not been bored. Our neighbours joined us for drinks in the evening.

washed my hair today at the sink, which was not easy. I regularly used to wash my hair with a jug at a sink in my youth, but not being able to stand made it difficult and messy, but at me my hair doesn’t feel yucky.

Still waiting for a follow-up appointment to look at my wounds. Hopefully that will come through today.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/08/2025 01:11

I'm exhausted. Took baby to last day of scheduled activity this morning (40 min drive), home, fed dc, took mum w dc in tow to med appt (45 min drive), then to oncology to get meds, 30 mins in traffic to get mum's haircut, pharmacy for me and then mum to vax appt. And finally 45 min drive in traffic home. Old car, no a/c. 🥵
Got into the tub for a bath once home, bathed dc and then made myself and mum iced caramel lattes.
Will put dinner together shortly. Planning to take dc out this evening. 🤞

Well done Myrtle - hope your recovery continues.

Beautiful location and photos, havoc.

I've shaken off my cold and am feeling better, though my ribs hurt from sneezing.

DD spotted a hummingbird at the feeder, guzzling hooch as it turned out. I emptied the dregs, washed, and refilled it. I don't think they'll be here long as the nighttime temps are set to take a nosedive.

This is a three say weekend as Monday is Labor Day. I'm looking forward to the day off.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/08/2025 06:06

What kind of hummingbirds do you have Math? We have Anna's all year round here.
Myrtle, does it feel like it's healing? Any pain still? Too early to tell?

@bizzey , how are you doing? It's been a while.

Ended up staying home this evening. Kids were obviously over tired. And it has been so warm. Kids played, I played with them and watched some Netflix. We had ice cream.

I am having my dressing changed later this afternoon and hopefully will have the stitches out. If not, I’ll make an appointment to have them taken out next week.

I am able to stand up without crutches or pain, but I still need crutches to walk and I still need cocodamol a couple of times a day and to sleep. Progress is being made!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/08/2025 17:26

Myrtle, sounds like progress! ☺️

Even more progress because the stitches are dissolvable and will soon be gone. I have spare dressings for another week abd then I won't need them.

MargaretThursday · 30/08/2025 18:33

I have added plants to my garden pond (and one garden snail that sneaked in with them).

MissConductUS · 30/08/2025 20:17

Hi all. I came down with a stonking case of covid last week. I felt poorly on Wednesday, had a awful nights sleep, then tested positive Thursday morning. I did a telemedicine visit with one of the docs at the medical practice I use, and she gave me an rx for Paxlovid. I think it's working, as I am starting to feel somewhat human again today. I went to check my temp Thursday morning and my tympanic thermometer had stopped working, and it was less than a year old. I upgraded to a Braun, which Amazon delivered Friday. I've alternated between a slight fever and no fever.

Today is one month from my retirement date. When I planned it last February, it seemed so far away and now it's almost here. I do feel more relaxed. My blood pressure has been going down too. My work is planning a retirement dinner for me on 26 Sept at a posh local inn, so that should be fun. I've hardly eaten anything since Wednesday, but I should have my appetite back by then.

Monday is Labor Day here, so I don't have to be back to work until Tuesday

My mother's day petunias still look nice, but the rest of the flowers on the deck are looking a bit tired.

Baby just woke up from a nap and was on my lap nursing. Havoc sat down beside us, stroked baby's hair and said, Mummy, I love my baby. Baby, I'll always protect you. 🥹

Sorry about the covid, MissC. I have heard it's doing the rounds. Get as much rest as possible.

Myrtle that sounds very positive. I hope the path to recovery stays clear.

havoc we get Ruby Throated hummingbirds here, and they are strictly seasonal. You don't usually see the ruby throat as they are so iridescent, but they have them all the same. The Anna's look very striking.

Had a very restful day today and a little cat sitting in the afternoon. DD is out with a friend and I think I'll make a fried egg sandwich for a small evening bite to eat, and maybe use up a head of romaine lettuce (aka cos) in a caesaresque salad. I planted the stumps of two other lettuces out on my deck earlier in the week, and they have started sending up leaves.

HelenaJustina · 01/09/2025 21:04

Not had a chance to catch up with the full thread. Sorry! Just a quick note to say hope everyone is okay. Busy summer here and now we’re back round to September again, which will be no quieter! Will try to be more regular this season

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/09/2025 05:57

Nice to see you pop in @HelenaJustina 🥰
Busy summer here in Vancouver, too. 😵‍💫
Math, those hummingbirds are gorgeous! 😍
Hope everyone under the weather is on the up soon. 🩷

Spent the afternoon at the Richmond Country Farm Sunflower festival. It was the same place I took the dc to last fall for the pumpkin patch. There were so many other beautiful flowers in addition to the sunflowers as well as grapes, apples and blueberries. We went to their market before going home and I bought some gorgeous Okanagan peaches for pie and red carrots and ginger for broth I intend to make tomorrow.

Strangely, the pics of the sunflowers won't load, so I've subbed in pics of the butter tarts I also bought at the market and one with a bite out if it in the car. 😂😀
For the uninitiated, butter tarts are famously Canadian treats and the addition of raisins is hotly debated. They are very similar to the American pecan pie filling without the pecans. I'm attaching a Wikipedia link about them, but the part about the addition of nuts is wrong. I have never heard of that. It would not be a butter tart with nuts. Raisins are perfectly acceptable. The end. 😁

Good morning all (or evening/night!). Sorry to hear you have Covid @MissConductUS , that’s rubbish :(
Glad to hear you’re on the mend, and you too @MyrtleLion !
@Mumtobabyhavoc I’m in awe of how much you do with such little kids, I’m tired just listening to you!
my kids have started school yesterday, and my baby started big school. Because she’s in the youngest class and my next one up is in the top class of primary school, they both had a few lines to say in the opening ceremony/assembly (I don’t know the exact translation). Anyway dd was so shy, I had to get up in the front with her, but she managed ! They were both very cute 🥰
they’re on early finish times this week, which is a little inconvenient as I’m going away for a few days this week, and DH is working overtime at the moment, but I’m glad they’re back. Been a very long summer!

EllaDisenchanted · 02/09/2025 06:46

@mathanxiety its my dream to one day grow veg and eat it, but sadly im very very bad at looking after plants 😄

Welikebeingcosy · 02/09/2025 14:59

I haven't posted for a while. I got caught up in someone else's life disaster and was supporting them through it and now they're out the other side but the stress of it all, made me have to cut contact with them. But at least I've got space for me again
I went to grease the immersive musical last week with an old uni friend and it was amazing, but been wiped out ever since. I think it was my mind saying 'we don't usually do things for our self, this is a strange adjustment'. I'm trying to push myself to do a few other non mum/carer role things, but haven't managed it yet. Taking DD to a play cafe soon and hoping to cook a nice wholesome dinner when we get back. The weather has turned here and I'm loving it, as it means I can cosy up at home and do things I like doing indoors.

Hi 👋👋👋..
Been reading the thread..and actually thought I had been replying!
I think I was just think of what I want to say 😃😅.

Anyhow all good here .
Very stressful times at the moment for various reasons.

I had to go out today and I had to wear my ankle boots. As I didn't think my very expensive, supper comfortable, wonderful, 💕💕 , don't know I have feet ... trainers would cope with the deluge of rain we have been having !

It just seems to come out of nowhere 😃!
