Looks so good! All the food on this thread has inspired me.

I made Lebanese pitta chips for the first time yesterday. I didn't like them, compared to the restaurant ones, but I thought at least I have it a go and it might be opening the flood gates to making more interesting things!

Welikebeingcosy · 09/08/2025 21:50

I made homemade air fryer chips with a huge pile of sauteed veg for my dinner just now. It's amazing how easy it can be to do healthy things when I release the pressure of it being a lovely attractive dinner.

Looks good Cosy!

Cherry choc chip pecan loaf tastes good and apple cinnamon buns look to have turned out as well.

Wonderful baking and dinners!
I had tuna salad on sourdough toast, not worth a photo (and I can't figure out how to post photos anyway).

DD and I spent the day getting her packed and ready for a visit to her granny, my DM. Her flight is tomorrow and she is as packed as she needs to be apart from last minute things like deodorant. She's a very decisive packer. She doesn't get that from me.

It's been very hot here for the last few days, and humid too. The locust cacophony in the evenings is deafening. The hummingbirds are still around, but I expect they will start packing their tiny little bags and heading south in the next few weeks.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/08/2025 03:42

Safe trip to your dd Math. I do love a good sourdough! I was probably the only one that didn't learn to make it during the pandemic. 😂 I should get cracking on that as a fall project. 🤔

Picked some cherry tomatoes in the garden tonight.

Ooh @Mumtobabyhavoc I am envious of this tomatoes. I meant to have a go at growing some this year. I was going to get a small greenhouse just to grow some but I got as far as getting some gro bags and some seedling trays, along with cress seeds for the boys to grow their names in cress, which is what i used to do with my own DC when they were young. Everything has been tidied away into one of our sheds. I must get them out before next summer. I think I have more buildings than plants in the back garden. I have 3 largish sheds, OH has his garden office and I have 4 storage containers too. When the boys were here we had a tent up and a small pool. We also have a table and seating for about 10 people. It's not a very big garden and we also hang laundry out to dry. Strangely enough it doesn't seem to be very crowded, even though it's a very modest size. It's south facing as well, so it gets the sun all day.

It's another warm day today, so salad and chicken for dinner I think. I finished putting together the boxes for my friends yesterday and I made labels with 'Inspirational' quotes on them. I got a couple of other things to put in them, gold under eye patches and shower steamers which smell gorgeous. We are out to lunch on Wednesday, at my behest (the first time I've suggested it!). I love surprising people. I'm a bit giddy thinking about it. I just remembered my mum calling me a 'giddy kipper'. I wonder if that is a northern UK saying? 🤔
@mathanxiety I first had tuna salad (and egg and chicken salad) when I lived it Canada in 1976. It was a revelation, we didn't have mayonnaise at home, just salad cream on very limp lettuce, cucumber, tomato and occasionally spring onions. I introduced it when I got home, along with devilled eggs and actual oil and vinegar salad dressing! In Canada we had salad every day as part of our dinner. It was brilliant. I brought back a measuring shaker for the dressing, along with several powdered flavourings, used to mix in the shaker. I thought we were so Cosmopolitan!
My son and his family have salad, with dressing, every day, in Portugal, which I love when I'm over there, and I always mean to carry it on when I get home, but never do.
My son sent me a couple of photos of my grandsons, drawing, yesterday. I think we have done one of those body switches, because I spent the afternoon playing on the Wii!
Hope everyone is keeping cool in this heatwave and all poorly people are on the mend.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/08/2025 19:08

Uman, I'm a bit of a novice gardener, but from my experience tomato plants are quite predatory, so give them space. I just have one and have cut it back savagely twice now. I thin it out ruthlessly as well. The branches get quite heavy so be prepared to stake them so they don't break off.
The spearmint is also growing wildly. I end up composting a lot of it as I can inly use so much. It's lovely chopped into salads and I put it in a jug of strong tea for ice tea and also for lemonade.

We all managed to sleep until 8:30am today. It was a late night though. I took Havoc to Playland from about 5:30pm-closing at 7, then back home for a snack and pick-up baby, then to a 50's themed diner/ hamburger stand for French fries, then to the airport park for a run around and to watch planes. We were home around 11pm. Even though I sprayed Off on us at the park before walking through the grass a mozzie found the back of my thigh and took a bite. There are lots of mosquitoes at that park, likely because of the nearby creeks. One stowed away in the car and I freaked out as it buzzed into my face when driving!

DD made her flight with no problems, and says she'll give me a whatsapp call around 11pm when she lands at the crack of dawn. She has to find and get aboard a coach from the airport to Dublin and then get on a local bus to take her out to DM's, while probably feeling very groggy and lugging her suitcase, neck pillow, and under the seat bag. Hopefully she'll find a vending machine and get herself a bottle of Coke. DM has promised to provide a hearty breakfast whenever she arrives.

I watered the grass as a promised rainstorm never materialised and the grass looks the worse for wear thanks to the heat.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/08/2025 06:26

Math, glad your dd arrived safely. How lovely of your dmum to welcome her with breakfast. 🩷

Was awake at 7:30am and out the door at 8:30am taking Havoc across town, a 40 min drive, to activity. 😰
Definitely not my favourite way to start my day.
Managed half a cup of tea and a few bites of a cinnamon bun before rushing out.
Did Costco shop on the way home. 😨
It was already busy at 11am.
Drove down the aisleway toward a parking spot, old guy wanders out, stands in the middle of the roadway, turns to look at, presumably, his wife, so I lightly honk the car horn. Politely, I thought. Well. The attitude I got in return. Guy throws up his hands and yells, What? at me. He sauntered off, but stood waiting, staring at me, while I parked and got out of my car. He yelled at me again and only turned and walked away when he saw me getting Havoc out of the car. Jeezus. Was he wanting a fight? 😮 I can get pretty mouthy myself, but not when I'm in the wrong. 😇
Anyway....
Had rotisserie chicken in a croissant for lunch with some berries and grapes, an iced caramel latte and then 🥁 a piece of tuxedo cake. 😋 All is good now. 😅

@Mumtobabyhavoc Honestly, some people. How rude! Your lunch looks lovely, so that’s a win for you.

i did my online shopping from Costco yesterday. I only needed toilet paper, but you have to buy a minimum of 2 lots and there are 40 rolls in each lot, so 80 altogether. I realised the last lot I ordered lasted us 6 months. We have to store the majority in one of the garden sheds, where they take up loads of space. I also ordered some small dishes for salads as suddenly a couple of our lovely wooden bowls have split. I have had them for over 25 years so it’s time to say goodbye.
Last night I managed to smash one of my lovely wine glasses that my daughter bought me for Mother’s Day. I had to get my OH to come in and clean the floor for me, as I had bare feet and it just smashed everywhere, luckily I’d drunk the wine, so it was empty. My OH swept round me, vacuumed and then mopped. This was at 11 at night. This morning I managed to break one of the shelves on my bookcase in my bedroom. I’m not steady on my feet and need to hold onto something with both hands. I hadn’t realised how hard I was leaning on the shelf. Thank goodness the bed was there to save me.
I’ve had a day of chilling, reading and frisbee golf on the Wii. DD made hot dog sausages, with tomato sauce and pasta for dinner. We watched My kitchen Rules: Australia and were in awe of the fabulous meals people produce. We tend to stick to the same tried and tested meals. Roast chicken yesterday. Chicken soup tomorrow with the stock made from chicken bones. Possibly chicken curry as well. We do like our chicken, thank goodness.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/08/2025 00:42

Oh Uman. I'm sorry about the glass, but I'm glad you didn't cut yourself. Perhaps some strategically placed railings/handrails would help?

I took Havoc to a local wading pool while baby napped. Just popped back home to get baby and go back for the last hour. 🥵

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/08/2025 06:08

Made it to the pool again with Havoc and baby! It was great as not busy at all. After that went to White Spot for Pirate Packs in the drive-in (old fashioned car service), then to wash and vacuum the car and since it was such a gorgeous night, and just enough time, drove up Burnaby Mtn to catch the sunset. Got home, bathed the kids, had a bath myself and am ready for bed.

Oh @Umanresources I hope you're OK!

Surgery is today, 4pm. But I've been nil by mouth since midnight and last finished eating at 6.30pm.

I'd have brought my knitting if I'd known!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/08/2025 11:19

Oh, that's so difficult @MyrtleLion but it will be over soon enough and you'll begin healing. Are you out of town for surgery, or just far from home?

I can't sleep. A bit too preoccupied with my thoughts.

OP posts:
EllaDisenchanted · 12/08/2025 13:53

@MyrtleLion that’s not fun! How are you getting on?
@Umanresources what a shame about the glass! I hate when something sentimental breaks 😕
@Mumtobabyhavoc hopefully you’ve managed to nod off

we had a power cut in a wide area of the city early this morning, caused by a construction crew. It’s a heatwave (39c) and we had no aircon/some buildings didn’t have water 🥵
I normally have stocks of bottled water in our safe room, so initially I wasn’t bothered, but turns out one of the kids has been helping himself to bottled water so we were very low 🥴. DH replenished now.

my apartment got power back on relatively quickly by about 10am but my neighbours down the road are still without power.
I made shakshuka for breakfast and nibbled on some sticky toffee pudding I made for Shabbat. Healthy eating went out the window with the pudding 😄

ds15 was supposed to go on a youth group camping trip for a few days, but all camps have been cancelled on health grounds because of the heatwave (they sleep outdoors or in tents if they bother to put them up and just hike for days). Shame for him but I’d rather he was safe

Uman, sorry to hear about the broken wine glass. Can you order a replacement? I have some lovely dishes from Dansk, but the pattern has been out of production for ages, so every time I one gets broken or chipped, it's a crisis.

Havoc, tomato plants do spread aggressively. That's one reason why I grown mine in containers.

Myrtle, good luck with your surgery!

Ella, I'm glad power outages in hot weather aren't unique to New York. Good that you got yours back on quickly.

Now that I'm out of my office and in a cubical, it's much harder for me to post on MN, which is a bother.

I apologize for the lack of wildlife photos recently, but I have these three. Every morning I wake up to tiny tree frogs clinging to the kitchen windows. This one I've illuminated with a flashlight to get him to show up in the photo. He's about an inch in size, possibly a bit more

The picture at the reservoir is a heron. I saw it dive underwater hunting for fish, then it emerged15-20 seconds later and I took the picture as it came out of the water. Finally, I found this wild animal on the sofa this morning. I gave it belly rubs before leaving for work.

Miss, absolutely love that frog pic! I also love that they cling to your window, likely to greet you! 🐸
Uman, it's 11am here, but you should be done surgery by now unless it was delayed. Hoping it went well! 🩷
Ella, what does your safe room consist of? Is it bomb-resistant? I looked at property in Israel some time ago and I recall features like that.

Yeah, pretty much tagged everyone to say, Hi. ☺️

Hot day here again. Supposed to be at least 30c, not heat dome hot, though, thank God, but hot enough.
Steam cleaned kitchen floor and living room area rug last night, did a load of clothes and hung up, then put a load of towels on to wash and put them into the dryer before bed. Stayed awake thinking, scrolling, tossing and turning until 4am or so then up at about 8 with dc. Cleaned the bathroom. Washing bedding now then will take dc out to an outdoor pool or spray park. Havoc has a bit of pink on cheeks from yesterday. Will be diligent with sunscreen today.

Thank you for your good wishes. The operation was at 1pm in the end, about 15 miles from home. It took 3 hours and I’m now at home and more mobile than expected.

HildaTablet · 12/08/2025 23:30

Glad your op went well, @MyrtleLion. Good news that you can move more than expected.

Thanks for the shout-out @Mumtobabyhavoc. I’m still here. It’s been a hot one for us too, temps up around 30 and predicted to continue that way for the next few days. I’m not good in heat so I lurk inside feeling wiped out. Tomorrow I’ve got to go food-shopping and to the library, though.

When it gets a bit cooler in the evening I've been harvesting our greengage crop, which is good this year. It’s an old tree and very spindly; it needs cutting down, really, but I keep hesitating because the fruit is so delicious. They don’t keep well so I tend to cook them into a compote then freeze for later. It’s good on ice-cream or yogurt.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/08/2025 00:00

Oh well done @MyrtleLion ! So pleased to hear it. 👏
@HildaTablet I'm not great in the heat anymore. I no longer try for a tan so I'm covered up plus spf50 on exposed skin. I'm obsessed with making sure I get the back of my hands as well. Years of outdoor sports has taken a toll. Nice to see you pop in. Where are you again?

I took dc to an outdoor wading pool this afternoon (covered and sprayed as above). It was a bit busy at first with a group of summer camp kids in the 8-10y range, but quite pleasant when they left and it was just a handful of wee ones. Having a snack now and an ice tea then will take Havoc to activity. Dreading getting all sweaty again having just showered. 🥵

OP posts:
Umanresources · 13/08/2025 01:09

@MyrtleLion so pleased things are going well. I hope you will be more mobile soon.

@Mumtobabyhavoc I’m actually fine, after my little slip. I do have grab rails everywhere, but there is just a small space in the bedroom between the bed and the door, which has no room for a rail. I do have a rail at the side of my bed, which I was horrified to find that I needed. I do sometimes fall asleep holding onto it! Last night we had trauma because my DD had a large spider in her room. My OH was needed to get it, but it disappeared. I went into the bathroom later and it was in there. I ambled as fast as I could into the hall and phoned my OH, who had gone back into his office. That flipping monster ran past me into my bedroom. Poor A had to try and find it - no luck, so I spent half an hour in the bathroom, trying to pluck up the courage to go to bed.

@MissConductUS i have managed to order a couple more glasses, thank goodness.

My Costco order came today and the salad dishes are gorgeous. I’m so pleased with them. They came in handy tonight when we had salad with “picky bits”. It’s still really warm here. Tomorrow I’m off for lunch with some former work colleagues, so looking forward to that.

mathanxiety · 13/08/2025 04:14

Wishing you a speedy and uncomplicated recovery, Myrtle.

Hope you'll get some decent sleep tonight, havoc.

Lovely photos, MissC.

The storms finally struck last night, followed by an extremely humid and hot day, and just as I left work I was caught in a cloudburst. There is flooding all over the region and plenty of fallen trees. The basement of my buildicloud burst.

DD has figured out the public transport and is enjoying her trip.
