Different variations of them if you need the base to be longer I should imagine .

MargaretThursday · 05/08/2025 19:36

The budgies are fine and enjoying themselves taunting any neighbourhood cats.

I seem to have twisted my ankle rather oddly. It feels like a sharp twist, and I can't put any weight on it, but I didn't do anything. I was walking on flat ground when it suddenly went. Now sure what to do now except hop. 😁

sueelleker · 05/08/2025 19:47

Have you torn a ligament?

Have you torn a ligament?

That was my thought too. If so, it's likely going to need surgical repair.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/08/2025 21:46

Margaret, that sounds painful. 😟
Hi, Sue!

Dropped off three boxes of items at baby charity then stopped at tire place, selected new tires and booked appt for tomorrow. On the way home stopped at fitness store and bought a weighted bar for squats and a new bungee to fix to door for various pulling exercises.
Have already used both. 😇

I don't think so. It's improved enough that I managed to limp upstairs anyway. 😀

I'm thinking of maybe trapped nerve. I'm in bed with my fingers crossed I wake up tomorrow totally fine. It normally works anyway.

MyrtleLion · 05/08/2025 23:38

You make a good point about walking on crutches while inebriated. I hadn’t considered that, Maybe I can persuade him to spend £20 a week on a wheelchair.

I won’t be stuck upstairs for two months! But I did find during lockdown that I didn’t mind not going out. What was difficult was not seeing further than across the street - we lived on a hill and we could only see the houses up from us and the trees below us that grew so tall we couldn’t see beyond them.

I discovered I needed to drive the car to get some long vision which meant I didn’t go stir crazy. I never got out of the car, just drove up the dual carriageway for 10 minutes then back.

We’ve moved since then and our windows see a lot further so I think it will be fine,

I tried a knee scooter when I first broke my leg, but it was a lot of weight on my knee and I couldn’t get the handlebars high enough. My surgeon also disapproved because the leg was meant to be elevated as much as possible. Thanks for thinking of solutions!

havoc the cookies lived up to their billing. The recipe is by a woman from Australia who has a bakery called Brooki (iirc).
DD weighed the dough balls carefully and refrigerated them before baking. They have brown sugar and milk chocolate chips and are enormous.

@MyrtleLion I hope you don't get too stir crazy. I go out very little now and i must admit to disliking crowds so much. I enjoyed going out to the art show, but disliked bring in the restaurant. Even though we sat in a corner with very few people around i think it was perhaps the noise level that worried me. I occasionally go out with friends to a restaurant, where we can reserve the same table, by the door and the staff know us.

My online shopping yielded a bonus the other day. As well as my own order, I also had someone else's delivered, so i got in touch with the company, along with a photo of my extra parcel. The company apologised, said I could keep it and offered to refund the cost of my order. I kept telling them I had my order, plus the extra one. After 3 emails and the same reply offering me money i accepted it! I have now ordered some gift boxes and will make up some parcels for my meal friends, with some of the items from the extra box, plus I'm going to share out some of the catering size dried oregano, which i ordered by mistake. We use a lot, but not that much. I must start to read the details on the discount site. I ordered some white and red wine stockpot. I didn't realise that there were sixteen packs of each, so they will go into the food boxes too.
I got a new Wii game from Ebay yesterday, it can be one player, teams or 1 v 4 players. Just right for Christmas when the family is over. I played a couple of the games to try it out yesterday. My OH watched me and we were howling laughing as I tried to replicate dance moves on the Wii, in Octopus Dance. 🐙 I also found out I am rubbish at driving a car round obstacles as well. The best thing is though, I am the champion of all the games so far 😀 I'm going to have another play this afternoon. I'm so glad I'm retired!
@Mumtobabyhavoc and @EllaDisenchanted . Those cinnamon buns do look delicious, but you know i don't like cinnamon. During lockdown I read a series of books by a Swedish author and she was always talking about coffee and cinnamon buns. Her characters very rarely had a meal, just snacked on those infernal buns, which were taken out of the freezer!
@Deathraystare have you got any closer to finding somewhere to live? I think about you quite a lot.
@Mathanxiety I love chocolate chip cookies. My favourite!
Off to make up my gift boxes.

Deathraystare · 06/08/2025 17:28

Hi @Umanresources .

Thanks. I have just this minute finished the form for the council and have to wait up to 60 days!!! for a reply!!!

Ho hum.

Hey don't knock those cinnamon buns!!

If there is suddenly a world shortage of dried oregano we know who to come to with our begging bowl!

I bought a huge container of oregano at the warehouse club a year ago and expect it will be here for decades to come. It was the about the same price as a small container from the supermarket, so no harm done.

I also have been baking cookies. My daughter gave me a book with 100 cookie recipes that I have been trying out. My last batch was oatmeal chocolate chip and they were lovely.

My post retirement replacement come onboard on Monday and I have been spending a lot of time getting her up to speed on various things. I even moved out of my office and into a cubical so that she wouldn't have to move later. My boss wanted a long transition period, so I'll be here supporting her until the end of September. I think a month would have been plenty. My subordinate who wanted the job seems to be taking it alright, but it's hard to tell. I think she'll do fine.

It hasn't been too hot lately, but we could really use some rain.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/08/2025 17:41

How are you feeling about retiring, Miss? I imaging it will be a bit weird, maybe like vacation at first? What are you planning on doing with your time?

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 07/08/2025 20:47

Havoc, it is starting to feel a little weird. I've been working since I graduated from university, other than a few years when I was a stay at home mom, which was just a different kind of working.

I think it will feel like a vacation at first. I can sleep late, do errands whenever I want, etc. What also felt weird was when I started scheduling medical and dental appointments after my retirement date and could take appointments in the middle of the day.

I've applied to volunteer and my local SPCA (animal rescue/welfare organization). I have some relevant experience and have been a donor to them for years, so hopefully they'll find something for me to do. I don't think our cats will like it when I come home smelling of other animals.

It is going to be a big transition. I've been lurking in the retirement forum on Reddit to get some tips.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/08/2025 22:04

Miss, volunteering is a good plan. It's SPCA here, too.
I hope the wildfire smoke has eased.

We got a bit of rain two nights ago and it was a windy, so temps have dropped. Supposed to be 13c tonight. I like it cooker, so this suits me.

I started a sticky toffee pudding thread and if anyone wants to join a STP party this weekend you are welcome. Make your favourite recipe and post pics. A bit of Christmas in August. 😋😋😋 Any excuse for STP, really.

@Mumtobabyhavoci like it cooler too. It’s a bit cooler here but next week forecast to be warmer. Hope all feeling better.
@MissConductUSit must be a big change for you, but it sounds like you are looking forward to it and have plans to keep busy and enjoy life!
@Deathraystareim keeping fingers crossed for you finding a place.
Good luck with the op @MyrtleLionlooks like all organised.
well done to DS @EllaDisenchantedthe buns look lovely!
@Umanresourcesi have been waiting for a parcel - courier said delivered and sent a pin and photo of someone else’s door. DS went round and she showed him the parcel (which was hers not mine) said she had had the same problem but hers obviously just arrived. I have contacted courier who say very sorry you’d better contact the company you bought from. No I just want you to find my parcel! I have contacted them though.
Been away on holiday with the family, was lovely on a cruise to Croatia and Slovenia..
also been away with 2 friends for birthday - to Aberystwyth, was a truly lovely weekend - beautiful places and great fun. Also not too far to go.

MyrtleLion · 07/08/2025 23:32

I had my hair cut a bit shorter than usual today as it will be at least two months before I can have it done again.

My DB called about our nephew who is struggling. His dad, our eldest DB, died of cancer about 18 months ago, and it’s tough for him. DB drove up from Somerset and is taking our nephew out for a meal and a chat. I will see DB tomorrow when I take our DM for lunch. Then we have a family BBQ on Saturday. My last alcohol for some time.

I also managed to speak to the menopause nurse about my HRT and she is referring me to the hospital for specialist advice.

Our holiday was changed earlier this year and the holiday company have finally responded to my additional expenses claim. I had to chase them, but they will refund everything apart from wine with dinner the night before our very early flight.

I am finishing a book nook, hopefully it will be complete before the op on Tuesday and I will post pictures when it is done.

Umanresources · 07/08/2025 23:44

@sproutsandparsnips so weird about your parcel, same thing happened to me yesterday. OH went round with my iPad hunting for a blue door. Luckily he found it and the parcel was handed over no problem.

@Mumtobabyhavoc I’ve never had sticky toffee pudding. I’m not really a pudding person, although I do like rice pudding and also tiramisu.

@MissConductUS good luck with your retirement. I took early retirement from teaching, but started my own online business, creating and selling spelling resources to schools. It served me well for 10 years, and I closed it down a couple of years ago, (if anyone wants English spelling and word activities just ask!)

I also did some tutoring at home and loved that, but gave that up during the pandemic.

i draw, paint, craft, read, chat, watch TV, and spend a lot of time online. It’s very true Miss that you will wonder how you ever found time to go to work. Medical appointments seem to take up a lot of time too!

The photos are the boxes I’ve put together for 5 friends, along with the oregano, there are some little treats and each friend has a pair of socks with a famous artwork on it; this one is Starry Night, by Van Gogh. One of my all time favourite paintings.

Uman, sticky toffee pudding is actually a date cake with toffee sauce. It's very good. I really line the boxes put together! How thoughtful!
Sprouts, your holidays sound great! I'md love to see Croatia.
Myrtle, I'm due for a haircut, too.

Had dc at playground for about 90 mins, then home for lunch, then I had an errand. We've eaten and dc are playing with brooms on the deck. The clouds are almost gone and it looks like it will be quite warm this weekend.

They look beautiful. One of my favourite songs ever is starry starry night by Don McClean.

My little one is home ed and has taught herself to read but is reluctant to do writing activities with me. I'd love to look at some of your resources, they might help her.
