I hope you are feeling better now, math.

Just a week until my ankle fusion surgery, so I spent half an hour working out how to bum shuffle up and down the stairs at home. We have a spiral staircase and it’s dangerous to try and go up and down with crutches. I will be living on the first floor (second floor in US English) - the middle floor of three. We have our bedroom and en-suite there and the main living room, so DH will bring up meals and make me tea (I have a kettle up here).

Family BBQ on Saturday, so my last outing for a few weeks.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/08/2025 22:24

How were the cookies, Math? I've always used the recipes on the back of the Hershey's or Baker's choc packages. someone shared a choc chip recipe link here and I lost the tab. I think it was "New York's Best?"
Myrtle, yes, def be careful on those stairs!

Still no smell and taste is muted, but I do think I'm over the worst of the "cold." 😅 Havoc seemed to be getting all stuffy last night and was sweating quite a lot during nap yesterday. So, I think it's making the rounds. I checked for fever last night and this morning and temp is about normal.

Baby's current fascination is with garbage trucks, or "beggie twuk". 😂🥰 And runs to the window to look at the slightest sound indicating one might be in the street.
Havoc was/s still same, but two summers ago it was buses and I remember getting quite exhausted one day getting up every 15 minutes to lift up a very insistent Havoc to watch the bus go by. The bus has since changed route and doesn't go down our street now.

It's funny how you kinda forget those little moments. 🥹

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/08/2025 04:01

I just randomly kissed Havoc and then baby and whispered, "I love you" to both. Then I went into the kitchen to continue making dinner.
Baby, 19mos, just ran in, hugged my legs and said, I gove you. 🥹🩷

I'm always happy when I've got a nice plate of veg with my dinner. 💚

Sounds like you're feeling better @Mumtobabyhavoc . I love that little moment of the baby hugging your legs. There's so much we forget isn't there ..sometimes I wish I could go back to baby and toddler days and enjoy it more in the moment, but then I also remember how friggin exhausted I was and try to give myself grace and enjoy age six in a way I couldn't enjoy age two and three etc.

@MyrtleLion well done with the bum shuffling practise, I bet it's a bit daunting but I'm sure you'll have a nice rest. Have you got any books or anything you're planning to catch up with during that time?

My DD is with her nanna for five days whilst I catch up with some rest and do some driving lessons in between. İt's easier for her to stay there as the buses are so limited where my mum lives so it can take a few hours round trip, even though it's only about a half hour drive. Hopefully I'll get over my fear of speed soon, so I can progress closer to the test.

Just had a French stick baguette with king prawns avocado and baby gem lettuce for lunch. About to have some reduced price water melon from a packet. Missed breakfast whilst having a lie in and I'm still hungry haha! Sometimes I forget to eat properly when I'm parenting so it's something I want to work on and not just catch up with when DD isn't with her nanna.

Sending good wishes for a complete recovery to everyone feeling horrible. I lost 5 lbs last weekend and during the week as all I could stomach was toast and very small helpings of food. I felt well enough yesterday to make lasagna and have a piece, and there was plenty left for me and DD today, with tomorrow a possibility too.

DD is now making chocolate chip cookies that are supposedly the world's best. The cookie dough balls will be refrigerated overnight.

I had a busy weekend capped by my usual 6am weekday alarm going off two hours before today's alarm, and just as I was settling back to snooze an hour later, my mum phoned with a problem that could have been solved by a phone call to a shop in the village where she lives. She hung up and then called me back half an hour later to say everything was sorted out and to thank me for my advice. A lie in was clearly not going to happen, so I got up, had a cup of tea, and was on the couch starting to doze again when the actual alarm I had set went off. So much for the day of rest. The church an hour later was very stuffy but the congregation was in good voice.

Good news about your AC, MissC.

That sounds frustrating about the lie in! I keep my phone in silent when I'm in bed as it can get a bit much feeling obligated to reply to texts and answer calls. I always tell myself if there's an emergency someone will be knocking on my door.

My DD is a stickler for trying to get me to answer the phone though. She'll get frustrated and be like 'answer it', and I keep trying to explain to her that we don't have to answer just because the phone is ringing and they can leave a message if it's important.

Not exactly unexciting but I just passed my driving test at the age of 56 🚗

MyrtleLion · 05/08/2025 16:11

Congratulations @MadisonAvenue !

❤️🎉🥳👏🏻🍾🙌🎊🍻🥂🎈🪅

Brilliant news!

MyrtleLion · 05/08/2025 16:12

@Welikebeingcosy

I have books, audiobooks, podcasts, knitting, Apple TV+, Netflix, Amazon Prime and a Nintendo Switch. I am going to be very busy relaxing!

MissConductUS · 05/08/2025 16:21

Welcome, @MadisonAvenue, thanks for sharing your driving news and congratulations! Is your handle a reference to Madison Ave. in NYC? I'm a New Yorker.

Havoc, that's so sweet about the baby. I can't believe it's been 19 months already.

Myrtle, good job practicing the stairs before your surgery. How long are they telling you before you'll be ambulatory again?

Apologies for the lack of turtle pictures. The men in high viz are doing repairs on the reservoir retaining wall and have sent the turtles into hiding. I did get a picture of an invasive plant that grows on the shore of the reservoir that's called Purple Loosestrife. The flowers are pretty. Sadly, it looks like my zinnias on the deck are in decline, but there are still a few blooms.

@MissConductUS
It's frustrating because they haven’t told me yet.

Standard is 6-8 weeks in a non-weight bearing cast then another 6-8 weeks in a walking boot (as it’s my left leg, I can then drive my automatic car).

But if I have to have a ligament repair as well, which is very likely as I have severe tears in two ligaments, it could be longer. I also have a rare genetic condition that affects swelling in my lower legs which is likely to mean longer in plaster.

I emailed my consultant (equivalent to an attending in the US, I think), in April and I still haven’t had a reply, and he has been contacted twice more by the surgery intake team to give me more information. He’s on leave till tomorrow, so hopefully I will have a response before the end of the week. It is currently difficult to plan while I don’t know how long I’ll be in plaster.

EllaDisenchanted · 05/08/2025 16:33

Well done @MadisonAvenue ! 🎉🚙

We had a fast day again on Sunday, the saddest day of the Jewish calendar. In the morning we sit on the floor and mourn and recite the book of lamentations (eicha) but in the afternoon some of the restrictions lift. Anyway DS15 had a hankering for cinnamon buns so in the afternoon I gave him a recipe I’d tried out recently for an event (stupidly doubled it the first time and it made 9 trays 🤣), and he did a very good job! Quite nice to break the fast on warm fresh out the oven buns 😋

Does that mean min 6-8 weeks staying on the first floor? Or are you hoping to be able to bum shuffle up and down the stairs a little after the initial recovery period?

ToldoRasa · 05/08/2025 16:41

Had a lovely day with my little dc in some beautiful gardens we visited. Just watching him playing amongst the flowers in the sunshine, fascinated by interesting plants, collecting stones, meandering down shaded paths, watching the fish darting amongst the waterlilies... I felt so much love in my heart for him and thought what a pure, happy little soul he is.

I am aware of how terribly sentimental this all is but I've had so much stress in my life lately, it was just lovely having such a perfect relaxing day with my little one ☺️

MissConductUS · 05/08/2025 16:45

Welcome, @ToldoRasa, and thanks for sharing the news of your lovely day out with your son. How old is he? There is that age when they're a bit magical as they discover the world. Then they become teenagers. 😂

Thank you. He is 2 and still very much in the cute phase of everything being so exciting. He likes to say hello to all the flowers which I just love.

I have a long way to go before the teenage phase though we do have the odd tantrum!

I will need to return to the fracture clinic after a couple of weeks to replace the back slab, which will be put on during the operation, with a proper plaster cast. I also have a regular weekly therapy appointment which I hope to get to. DH will drive me there and collect me.

Aside from those, I will be upstairs most of the time. The main problem will be spontaneous events like getting to the local restaurant/pub near the river on a sunny evening. As we both like to drink, DH can drive me there, but I would need to walk back on crutches. It’s a five minute walk normally, but will be much longer and more arduous on crutches. I do have some crutch handle covers which makes it easier. That’s when I might hire a wheelchair, but the hire needs planning in advance.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/08/2025 17:30

Myrtle, sounds like you've got it all planed!😊
Miss, hope the turtles are ok!

@MyrtleLion i had visions of you being stuck in your room for two months 🥴
maybe DH needs to take one for the team and have non alcoholic drinks on your river trips for a couple months, so he can drive you back?! ;)
Havoc, he did the baking under my instruction, but I rolled it out and finished them off as he had to go out at the final stage. It’s a multi step, multi hour process, so he did the vast majority.

I was thinking the same thing re Myrtle's DH abstaining so that he can drive her home. And Myrtle, drinking while trying to walk long distances on crutches is clearly contraindicated. It sounds like a recipe for a trip to A&E.

I'm just back from my lunchtime walk around the reservoir. It's very hazy, as we have Canadian wildfire smoke covering the east coast of the US.

bizzey · 05/08/2025 19:20

@MyrtleLion ...have you see these that might help you get around .

As long a it doesn't count as drink driving !

😅😅

Does your ankle have to be in a certain gravity position ?
