I thought Sainsburys had made a mistake when about 7 things cost me 50 quid. But, no it's correct.
I can't stand the cheap stuff and it will form the basis of a meal....but really??

we have a can of tuna between 3 of us, on a jacket potato, but also with baked beans, sweetcorn and whatever else.

Baked beans, tuna and sweetcorn combined is up there with chicken and BBQ sauce on a pizza levels of wrong

Never considered eating cold butter beans before! I love them but only ever had them with a traditional Sunday roast.

Can't help with the tuna as can't stand anything fish related but thanks for the butter bean tip 😋

Eh? What are butter beans doing in a traditional Sunday roast??

I knew it would be Ortiz. It’s outstanding quality. It’s not really expensive if you consider it the ‘meat’ of a meal.

One tin does three of us (adults) for dinner in a salad - a jar of butter beans, the tuna, red onion, parsley, cherry tomatoes and a nice sharp dressing, served with fresh bread or flatbreads. Maybe a little gem lettuce on the side. It’s very filling because of the beans and it’s a nice quick summer dinner.

If you are making a nice meal of tinned fish … Ortiz bonito Del Norte is best

Mermaidrone · 16/06/2025 23:53

You bought bonito, not tuna. Bonito is a superior fish than tuna, hence the price. That brand is from Spain and even there it's not cheap.

SheSaidHummingbird · 17/06/2025 00:22

@cumbriaisbest "I don't like the cheap stuff"

You purchased 2 tins from an expensive brand, from an expensive supermarket, and you either weren't price checking as you filled your basket, or you can't do maths.

And you "don't like the cheap stuff"

So, yeah. Unreasonable.

MangoesAndPeaches · 17/06/2025 02:21

It’s Bonito del Norte, which is albacore tuna. It’s a different species to the usual tuna you get in British supermarkets. It’s all lot smaller and tastier, and always fished with line pole.

Christ! Thats too much
The Lidl tuna is grim.. even my cat won't touch it.

cheap but awful
put me off shop's own tuna
although we had coop own tuna and it was totally fine!

wrong? it is delicious

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/06/2025 07:27

This thread reminds me of a seaside town we went to in France where there were entire shops dedicated to selling tinned anchovies at prices that ranged from "a bit much really" to "we're gonna need a second mortgage".

I do love a bit of fancy tinned fish though.

Cherrytree86 · 16/06/2025 23:12

@MoistVonL

this sounds really nice! Which butter beans do you use? I think I’d have to think of an alternative to red onion as I can always taste it for ages after eating it which I don’t like.

I don't know what the OP used but Bold Beans are widely available now and are excellent. About £3-4 a jar but well worth the price.

Catwalking · 17/06/2025 08:35

isn’t it cheaper to purchase fresh tuna & add the olive oil you prefer?

LeaderBee · 17/06/2025 10:07

LadyFooFooFrankentits · 16/06/2025 14:42

That's nothing, I just paid £2.29 for a fucking Yorkie bar at Newcastle station.

How did they let you buy that? It's not for girls.

I thought that was a thing, my Gran did it although she died 35 years ago!

MyCoralHedgehog · 17/06/2025 11:44

Starlight1984 · 16/06/2025 15:01

Oh come on 😂One tin of tuna, some butter beans, a red onion and some cherry tomatoes is NOT a "whopping bowl of food" between 3 people. And parsley is a herb, not a salad ingredient.

Sounds nice though

Sweetcupcakes16 · 17/06/2025 11:50

Learn to cut back then and stop complaining. Nothing wrong with non branded or supermarket own..especially in this cost of living

Icecreamhelps · 17/06/2025 11:50

PluckyBamboo · 17/06/2025 10:54

My dad would make baked cod with a side of butter beans and roast tomatoes. I've not eaten them for years. My add them to my basket on my next shop.

Emmz1510 · 17/06/2025 12:10

You made the choice to buy more expensive tuna…..then complained that it’s….more expensive 🤷‍♀️

rosyvalentine · 17/06/2025 12:21

I love Ortiz tuna but it's expensive. I buy it and hide it for myself 🫣

Tigergirl80 · 17/06/2025 13:31

I realised I had 8 tins of tuna last night because of this post.😄😄😄So I did a tuna and potato bake was gorgeous.

Plotzbluemonday · 17/06/2025 13:50

You could have returned it … looked at screen at self check out, or receipt.

We buy Ortiz all the time & sometimes Sainsbury has it on Special. Gourmet shops selling premium Ortiz, even more expensive.

We bring it back from Spain too.

EllieEllie25 · 17/06/2025 15:27

@cumbriaisbest the only tinned tuna that doesn’t have that horrible smell is the Waitrose tinned tuna steaks. I’m too tight to buy the fancy jars and won’t eat any of the other tinned ones but the Waitrose one is fine.

Wolmando · 17/06/2025 15:28

Well, I bought a small tin to try and some butterbeans, I'm on my own this week and wanted nice easy meals and it's hot. I'm hoping it does two meals with some other stuff. it would be wasted on DH who would just wolf it down

TimeForATerf · 17/06/2025 17:37

Channel4IsShit · 16/06/2025 15:59

I have no view on Ortiz tuna. Never had it.

But I have to say that posters who buy tuna in water are woefully misguided. Tuna in oil, or no tuna.

Watery tuna is an abomination.

I agree completely, although if you have a poorly cat, tuna spring water is good to get them to start drinking and improve their appetite.

For me though, it has to be in oil, nothing better than a tuna salad in warm weather where the tuna is just a little bit oily.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 17/06/2025 17:53

@MoistVonL Never had butter beans in a salad until reading your post but it sounded nice so have had them in a salad today - they were a nice addition! Thanks for the idea.

MoistVonL · 17/06/2025 19:01

@Cherrytree86 and @Bjorkdidit - yes, Bold Beans are excellent, and my preference. But if I’m in the Asian supermarket I will pick up whatever they have.
