I thought Sainsburys had made a mistake when about 7 things cost me 50 quid. But, no it's correct.
I can't stand the cheap stuff and it will form the basis of a meal....but really??

Seriously good advertising here well done 👏🏾

Well I came here thinking it was ridiculously expensive but now I want to try it 😀

Why would you not check the price before you bought it?

4 tins for £2.50.

That's the one I buy. £13.40 is ridiculous for tinned tuna if you want better quality get frozen or fresh tuna steaks and it will still be cheaper.

"I bought the luxury brand and it was expensive" SHOCK.

FWIW overfishing and poor technique is decimating the oceans. Tuna should be expensive. And fish should be a luxury. There are more sustainable foods.

I don’t disagree about overfishing and poor technique, but actually fish is pretty important to our diet. Very interesting programme recently, all about this very thing. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002dc8w?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

It’s also line caught, so environmentally conscious.

That doesn’t stop me having the cheap stuff on a tuna bagel, though.

@Starlight1984 - parsley is a salad ingredient in the quantities I use! We eat a lot of Middle Eastern style salads. I buy it at the Asian supermarket because their bunches are the size of a bouquet.

@knowifIcando I usually do a vinaigrette with olive oil, white wine vinegar (or lemon juice) and some Dijon mustard for a bit of bite.

Edited

That’s what I’m having for lunch tomorrow. Thanks!

LynetteScavo · 16/06/2025 16:56

But it’s really, really nice tuna. I only buy it when it’s on special offer. I read somewhere Dermot O’Leary likes it, which is why I tried it in the first place Grin When I buy it I don’t share it with the rest of the family. They can have Aldi tuna.

Mirabai · 16/06/2025 16:57

Tinned tuna tastes like catfood, even the expensive stuff.

Fresh tuna is £7.50 for 2 steaks. So you’d get 4 for that price.

FishPie2 · 16/06/2025 17:02

I would rather have that Tuna once a month than the tinned stuff every week. When I lived in Spain it was the only tuna we would ever buy, even over fresh. M and S have not had any for weeks and don't have a Sainsbury's near me so I am jealous.

MoistVonL · 16/06/2025 14:29

I knew it would be Ortiz. It’s outstanding quality. It’s not really expensive if you consider it the ‘meat’ of a meal.

One tin does three of us (adults) for dinner in a salad - a jar of butter beans, the tuna, red onion, parsley, cherry tomatoes and a nice sharp dressing, served with fresh bread or flatbreads. Maybe a little gem lettuce on the side. It’s very filling because of the beans and it’s a nice quick summer dinner.

This sound incredible- what are the butter beans in a jar? And the dressing?

Epidote · 16/06/2025 17:08

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 16/06/2025 14:11

Yes, that is cane fished white tuna in olive oile in big steaks. That is the price here in the UK is imported.

I can't afford expensive tuna but you have really made me want that salad 🤤

IberianBlackout · 16/06/2025 17:19

You’re better off just getting it from international supermarkets if you can be bothered.

Just buy these and stop the dramatics

HAB75 · 16/06/2025 17:23

I really like the Rio Mare brand - apart from Ortiz, it's all I'll buy. It is on sale at the moment in Tesco - £4 for a jar. But it is a bit of a Marmite brand - there are those of us who think it is the absolute cats pyjamas, and others who say quite the opposite. Worth trying, though, I'd say, if Ortiz is making your eyes smart.

I can't eat any of the other tinned brands or supermarket own tunas now. It needs to have been lovingly bathed in olive oil for me to want to eat it! Absolutely ridiculous, I know - John Wests was perfectly acceptable until sodding Ortiz appeared.

feelingbleh · 16/06/2025 17:30

I know exactly what you mean im always shocked and think iv made a mistake when I buy champagne and its more expensive then lambrini. Stupid Sainsbury's ripping us off

OonaStubbs · 16/06/2025 17:34

Why not buy a cheaper fish like pilchards or sardines?

Me too - only once mind!

MissNowt · 16/06/2025 17:36

I live in Spain & even though it’s Spanish, the Ortiz brand is expensive here too. But it’s gorgeous & v v popular. In our area the local restaurants serve a salad similar to @MoistVonL’s delicious recipe but they use small white beans rather than butter beans & add hardboiled egg quarters on the top. The Ortiz anchovies are amazing too but again not cheap.

Gnomegarden32 · 16/06/2025 17:41

You've inspired me to fork out for the Ortiz next time! I can't face buying the cheap stuff since reading about the oceans and overfishing so have just been going without. I miss tuna.

Starlight1984 · 16/06/2025 15:01

Oh come on 😂One tin of tuna, some butter beans, a red onion and some cherry tomatoes is NOT a "whopping bowl of food" between 3 people. And parsley is a herb, not a salad ingredient.

I would say butter beans are really filling too and I am greedy but I’d struggle to eat a massive portion. I have the same salad with the addition of salad spuds or potato salad on the side (homemade) maybe some green beans too and it is lovely. Cheap tuna though sadly,

OonaStubbs · 16/06/2025 17:44

Our local fishmongers give away fish heads and tails for people to give to their cats. Spending £6.70 on tunas is just a waste.

Channel4IsShit · 16/06/2025 17:50

Eh?
