I thought Sainsburys had made a mistake when about 7 things cost me 50 quid. But, no it's correct.
I can't stand the cheap stuff and it will form the basis of a meal....but really??

Our local fishmongers give away fish heads and tails for people to give to their cats. Spending £6.70 on tunas is just a waste.

Confused

Is expensive tuna like the royal family of tuna and the cheap tuna working class? How do you have cheap (stuff) tuna? It’s all fish from the sea.

Although I am aware tinned tuna is cheaper than fresh due to the species used for tinned but mostly tinned is the same species.

BeKindOpalBear · 16/06/2025 17:55

I knew it would be Ortiz tuna you are talking about, it is the most awesome tinned tuna I have tasted, once you've had it you can't go back, well I can't!

Cheapest you can get it is £5.65 a tin, we stock up when it's that price - we don't eat meat, so don't begrudge the price one bit!

I don't think you quite understand what this thread is about.

PomeloOud · 16/06/2025 18:04

Don’t buy it if the price makes you baulk. It’s completely delicious tuna and you won’t go back to the cheap stuff. See also M&S albacore tuna loins in a jar. No going back.

PluckyBamboo · 16/06/2025 18:13

Never considered eating cold butter beans before! I love them but only ever had them with a traditional Sunday roast.

Can't help with the tuna as can't stand anything fish related but thanks for the butter bean tip 😋

That's the one I buy. £13.40 is ridiculous for tinned tuna if you want better quality get frozen or fresh tuna steaks and it will still be cheaper.

Totally different product. Fresh or frozen raw tuna isn't a substitute for good cooked tuna in good EVOO, both of which are very expensive.

Plus the people making 'hilarious' MN tuna comments are missing the giant jar of quality butter beans, bread and salad ingredients. It's not a light meal.

Thanks OP, I'm in Spain at the moment and self catering so will treat myself to this meal sometime this week.

I use cannellini rather than butter beans, but it’s a gorgeous salad. Worth buying ventresca for.

Hallywally · 16/06/2025 18:18

Really? I shop at Sainsbury’s and it’s between £2.50 - £6.00 for 3 tins of tuna depending upon which brand you get. 🤔

I knew it would be Ortiz. It’s outstanding quality. It’s not really expensive if you consider it the ‘meat’ of a meal.

One tin does three of us (adults) for dinner in a salad - a jar of butter beans, the tuna, red onion, parsley, cherry tomatoes and a nice sharp dressing, served with fresh bread or flatbreads. Maybe a little gem lettuce on the side. It’s very filling because of the beans and it’s a nice quick summer dinner.

Yes it's this brand. I don't like the cheap stuff. It will make a decent meal for 3 adults, maybe a bit left over.

It's just mad how expensive any decent food is.

Oh come on 😂One tin of tuna, some butter beans, a red onion and some cherry tomatoes is NOT a "whopping bowl of food" between 3 people. And parsley is a herb, not a salad ingredient.

Let me introduce you to tabbouleh.

That’s like buying fillet steak and moaning that it costs so much more than stewing steak. You should have looked at the price on the shelf.

I'm sorry where is the moaning exactly? But thanks anyway.

Well, I'm an advertiser's dream customer because just did tuna salad for tea.
Although with lots of gorgeous new potatoes.

Alacartemenu · 16/06/2025 18:26

@MoistVonL You need to share the full recipe in one post. We're all salivating for it. Thanks 😊

It’s obviously a premium product and the price reflects that. No one is making you buy it!

cumbriaisbest · 16/06/2025 18:31

We do spaghetti with said expensive tuna, capers, chilli and lemon and oil. Rocket on top and parmesan. Its so nice.

Thank you for sharing that something you like is expensive and you won’t eat the cheaper version.

Sick of Eating Out and It's not that Good - is another thread on here and many people not happy doing it. Buy a couple of jars of this Tuna with the rest of the ingredients and it is far better than lots of the meals I have eaten out recently and I am not talking chain restaurants.

Sounds lovely! I'll try this for lunch one day, thanks for the tip.

Agree it's expensive for tuna but it may be worth it as an occassional treat. We rarely eat out nowadays so like to spend our money buying the better things in the supermarkets instead, which usually makes most of the food taste better than the average mediocre restaurant meal out
