I thought Sainsburys had made a mistake when about 7 things cost me 50 quid. But, no it's correct.
I can't stand the cheap stuff and it will form the basis of a meal....but really??

@Sweetcupcakes16 is right. I could feed two people twice on £13.40 and if I am spending that much on an item it won't be tuna fish.
When I was at university I took a job in a lingerie department during the long vac. I remember one of the shop assistants being so sorry an elderly woman could no longer afford the very expensive thermal vests she was used to buy. I recall the ascerbic comment by the head of department that the woman in question had had and was likely to continue to have more money than the shop assistant or the HoD was ever likely to earn.
I deplore the politics of envy I but can see her point. Or, as Gandhi put it, there is enough for everyone's need...one doesn't need expensive tuna fish (and cheaper brands than this one are also line caught - look on the tin - besides which tuna in oil has a huge amount of calories).

So what if it has loads of calories? What's that got to do with the price of fish?

@ButteredRadishes

calories may not be relevant to you but they are to plenty of others. Hth.

They aren't relevant to me.I'm old and fat and I've given up.

Such an inspirational post for older women.🙄

Thankfully providing people are in good health they can decide as the saying goes to 'let themselves go' or strive to be the best they can be by not 'giving up' purely because they are past a certain stage in life.

Buy the stuff in spring water - and Sainsburys' own brand will be fine. The stuff in oil has zillions of calories.

Very fair point. That’s why I’ve started eating a lot of Salade Eau de Thon. It’s really easy.

Put some lettuce leaves in a bowl. Open a tin of tuna in water, and take the tuna out with a fork. Then carefully throw the tuna away. Finally, drizzle the water from the tin over the lettuce leaves.

Tasty stuff, and sooo low in calories!

Bloody hell. It's been a while since I bought tins of tuna but I didn't realise it was THAT expensive! I can remember when I could buy the cheapo stuff in Sainsbury's for about 35p a tin (it was for the cats, not me,I'll only eat the naice stuff 😂). I think this must have been about 10 years ago.

Because of this thread, I bought a tin of Ortiz out of curiosity the other week and made myself tuna pasta with capers, rocket, lemon and basil.

It's okay, but I think I would have got the same results with John West tuna steak in oil, for less than a third of the price.

OonaStubbs · 10/07/2025 17:32

£13.40 for tuna is an absolute rip-off.

I haven't " let myself go". I opened a door and bits of me escaped.
