Do you ever not wear deodorant?

I was just buying a deodorant subscription and it asked if you use it - multiple times a day, once or occasionally.

Are there really people who can get away without it?

Since menopause, I don't sweat under my arms but I still apply after a shower as force of habit

Me. This.

Although the rest of my body makes up for it with the hot flushes Grin Confused

I sometimes give my armpits a rest from chemicals if I'm WFH all day.

Absolutely not, it’s like my routine, on in the morning, when I arrive at work, sometimes in between, and then before I go to bed.

Mumsnet at its best! Applying deodorant 4 times a day 🤣

Belladog1 · 15/06/2025 08:11

I'm a sweaty armpitted person and I always have been. I've tried all those strong deodorants that you put on at night and then wash off in the morning, and after a few days my pits are red, cracked and scaled.

I have worn black tops every single day for my entire adult life.

Yes, I wear deodorants. I shower in the morning and apply it. I also reapply before bed as I hate the thought of waking up smelly.

I have noticed my sweating has slightly decreased since my mid 40s.

Some people are just more sweaty than others, and I think that comment was uncalled for.

I wash my armpits in the morning, freshen up around lunchtime and have a shower in the evening. No one has ever complained. I prefer it and it’s cheaper.

Interesting I commented upthread that I don't sweat.. I also have dry ear wax

Sprogonthetyne · 15/06/2025 10:00

I've never known of anyone not using it daily, who I didn't think ought to be. However, I can possibly see people using different one for different occasions (eg. Extra strong for gym day, sensitive for day to day, nicer smell for occasions), so each one would only be used sometimes.

The non-functional ABCC11 allele is predominant among East Asians (80–95%), but very low among European and African populations (0–3%).[6] Most of the world's population has the gene that codes for the wet-type earwax and average body odor; however, East Asians are more likely to inherit the allele associated with the dry-type earwax and a reduction in body odor.[6][31][33] The reduction in body odor may be due to adaptation to colder climates by their ancient Northeast Asian ancestors.[31]

Not everyone has BO, but I know a few people who I think might be unaware that they have BO. My DH has an amazing system such that he can go for a day-long, hilly cycle ride and come out smelling still pretty decent, if not "shower fresh". I have an unscented antiperspirant for work days, and a herbal deodorant for other times, which I also apply after an evening shower. Gone on the days of hormonal shifts, but I still like the scent of the herbal stuff. I also wear a herbal perfume at home as it just feels quite luxurious, it's a little pleasure for me.

OpenWindow60 · 15/06/2025 11:21

I've never needed it, and stopped using it entirely about 20 years ago.

I'd need to be approaching a week without a wash before my armpits actually smell.

However, the leaky bladder dictates otherwise.

It's Arm & Hammer, they do a few.

I don’t wear it on the days I’m pottering at home, I don’t tend to stink because I generally don’t work up a sweat. But I do wear it at work or if I’m out and about, as if I do get hot and sweaty, then yeh the old pits can absolutely honk!

Pinkrabitt · 16/06/2025 07:31

i wear a natural deodersnt every day - AKT. It's expensive but they smell amazing and I never wear perfume. Having had cancer in the past I'm extra careful about what products I use.

DH sprays a ton of deoderant on his armpits every day and leaves behind a cloud of it in the air. I'm always worried about breathing that stuff in!
