Do you ever not wear deodorant?

I was just buying a deodorant subscription and it asked if you use it - multiple times a day, once or occasionally.

Are there really people who can get away without it?

Only wear it on working days.
I have a hippy natural deodorant I sometimes use on non-working days. I stick to cotton t-shirts if I'm not in work.

I don’t and I don’t smell

You've only got to go on London public transport to encounter people who also think they don't smell. 🤢

RampantIvy · 14/06/2025 08:34

Are people confusing deodorant with antiperspirant?

I wear antiperspirant every day. DH doesn't ever use it as he never sweats snd doesn't smell.

I'm curious to know which cultures don't believe in using it and why.

I wear Mitchum deodorant every day and have done for years. Nothing else works as well. I live abroad where you can't buy it and it's the very last thing I still stock up on when I am in the UK.

My husband has never bought or worn deodorant. He doesn't smell. I don't understand it.

Shenmen · 14/06/2025 08:38

I only wear it on one armpit. Since perimenopause only one smells 😜

Blobbitymacblob · 14/06/2025 08:42

I don’t wear it - I’m blessed with the non smelly genes which ds also inherited. Dd took after dh unfortunately.

Slothlydoesit · 14/06/2025 08:45

I also know someone who claims they don’t need it but they absolutely reek. It’s hard to be in a room with them.

MoistVonL · 14/06/2025 08:49

Antiperspirant every day or I smell. I sweat a lot - a combination of being overweight and on medication - so I don’t want to risk being smelly around other people.

I know a few people who don’t use it because they ‘don’t need it.’ I’d beg to differ.

PotatoBreadForTheWin · 14/06/2025 08:50

I would love not to need deodorant! Sadly I absolutely do need it. Usually only once a day.

Steelworks · 14/06/2025 08:58

Not always, and if I’m at home all day I don’t bother. Since breast cancer treatment and menopause, I feel don’t sweat as much. Dh would soon tell me if I do need it.

Doitrightnow · 14/06/2025 09:08

I almost never wear it.

Most of the time I wear fairly loose tops, or sleeveless tops/dresses. I'm not particularly sweaty. I don't smell.

However, I have found that I cannot wear certain tops. Even with deodorant these tops seem to start smelling immediately. Several are 100% cotton so it's not that they are necessarily manmade fibres. They do tend to be quite tight under the armpits so it's probably that.

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 14/06/2025 09:14

Since surgical menopause, all the hair under my arms stopped growing and they don't seem to sweat anymore, but I do still apply a deodorant once a day just in case. I remember a couple of times in 'the bad old days' when hormones made me pour with sweat, defeating my deodorant, the horror of catching a whiff of my own BO at work, and having to keep going to the toilets to try to wash my armpits in a cubicle with wet toilet paper and soap from the dispenser.

Itsallovernow23 · 14/06/2025 09:16

I never wear it and don't smell, even with exercise. The only time I smell is if I wear bad clothing or I don't scrub my pits in the bath. If I just wipe them over with my hand in the shower, then I would nedd to wear deodorant

CluckerHam · 14/06/2025 12:24

I never wear it. I don’t smell (I also have dry ear wax - apparently there’s a correlation between that and not having BO).

I would need to exercise and not shower for a day or two to smell

TENSsion · 14/06/2025 13:08

As there seem to be people who “don’t smell”, I wonder if there are people who just can’t smell body odour.

For example, if I’m in an enclosed space with someone with body odour, it gives me a headache but I can see people in the same space not struggling as badly. It causes me physical pain. It’s horrendous. Other people may not have that strong a reaction to it and they may even be unaware they smell to some people.

beadystar · 14/06/2025 13:15

I have the dry ear wax thing and I don’t really get smelly. It would be days with no shower before that happened. However I wear it anyway. I prefer unscented. Used to work with a smelly woman who’d cover it up with highly perfumed body sprays and the stench in the office was foul.

HeadNorth · 14/06/2025 13:16

I don't usually use deoderant except for the days I go into the office and have a commute by train. I find overpowering perfume the most annoying smell when I have to be in close proximity to strangers.

Beesandhoney123 · 14/06/2025 13:19

Never needed it. I don't seem to sweat or have any body odour even when engaged in strenuous exercise. Perhaps I have Royal connections :) or maybe I am merely a machine

I haven't worn deodorant for years. I have a shower in the morning so I'm clean. There's enough fragrance in my soap/shower gel and shampoo.

I have a fairly sedentary job so don't get sweaty during the day. If I do get sweaty because I've been exercising or I'm on holiday somewhere very hot, I prefer to have a shower to cool down and wash off the sweat rather than cover it up with deodorant.

Deodorant is meant to go on after showering to prevent the underarms from sweating and ending up smelling. I'm sure some people use deodorant in place of good hygiene practices but that's not what it's intended for.

Oh I have the dry earwax thing and am non-smelly too. I'd forgotten about that link but remember reading it somewhere. It's definitely a recognised genetic thing, so it's really not correct to think that all of the people who 'think they don't smell' are kidding themselves!

Anna42 · 14/06/2025 13:49

That's so interesting, I have the dry ear way thing too.

For those saying that anyone who doesn't wear deodorant must smell and not be aware of it: I am aware of when I smell. It's always when wearing a man made fibre or, as a previous poster said, some cotton tops, which made me wonder if the threads are coated in something less breathable. Otherwise, totally fine, thank you 😊

MyKingdomForACat · 14/06/2025 13:49

Every day after my shower unless I have shaved under my arms

My dp and dad never smell and neither wear deodorant. I put roll on on every day or I would.

Obviously some people just smell more than others

No. Some people don't smell. Some people do. I would if I didn't.

No. I’d stink without it.

My husband would never pong if he didn’t wear it.
