Sounds intriguing Pointy, did you have a target to aim at?

I had 40 different targets, it's field archery which is essentially simulated hunting. Bow hunting is illegal in the UK and I would never contemplate shooting a real animal, but the foam version is a lot of fun.

I was thinking more javelin but should have remembered you mentioned doing archery before. Sounds like a great day!

Grin @ pointythings!

I have to say that it’s noticeable that the Usual Suspects seem to be leaving us alone for now. For why?

I used to fence competitively as well...

It was a great day. This particular ground is challenging - it's normal to score between 100 and 150 points less than one's normal. Add to that I was shooting my late husband's bow (because I actually left my bow behind at another shoot, how stupid am I?) with a new string (affects how hard it is to draw) and a different fingertab (managed to lose mine, but I like this one better) and I was expecting a disaster.

My ankles, knees and hips are killing me though, because there was a lot of ups and downs on slippery dry ground. And it was so, so hot.

For ten minutes, Wilf Frost tried to get Shadow Home Sec Chris Philp to accept the rank hypocrisy in saying his party was totally right not to do something for 14 years AND Starmer totally wrong for not doing it sooner than six months. But it was like arguing with a tenacious parakeet. ~AA

You can't argue with stupid.

SerendipityJane · 16/06/2025 12:36

So hows that "Brexit" working out for y'all ?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2025/06/16/british-manufacturers-snub-us-after-trumps-trade-war/

The US has dropped out of the three most desirable markets for British manufacturers for the first time in decades, as Donald Trump’s trade war dents confidence in the world’s biggest economy.

UK industrial leaders now prefer the EU, Asia and the Middle East as their top three “growth” markets globally, according to trade body Make UK – relegating the Trump’s America to fourth spot.

Very apt username @pointythings

I’m having huge problems with MN on my iPad but none on my phone for some reason.

DuncinToffee · 16/06/2025 14:25

Notifications don't always work for me and on my phone it's very slow, laptop is fine most of the times.

The most annoying thing recently was being added to that stupid infinite scrolling test group without notification. Luckily they removed me quickly but what was that all about?

Reform UK social media team being very snippy on my local FB groups to anyone asking when we might hope to see our new county councillor either on social media or in real life. Enquiries are polite, some people have contacted him via the ‘proper’ channels but had no reply. Apparently, it’s all so new and overwhelming that he needs a good few months of training to even poke his head above the parapet. Hmm

Saucery · 16/06/2025 15:00

They are also cancelling meetings, stalling ongoing planning for trivialities such as NHS provision. Who could have predicted that, eh?

Can they keep this up until the next election ?

Such numptys & bigger fools who voted for them, although I do sympathise with those who didn’t & have to endure the ejjits.

Yvette Cooper is in the Commons for the government statement on grooming gangs

She says the Casey report makes 12 recommendations, and the government will act on all of them.
In line with the first recommendation, the government will tighten the law on rape, so adults cannot use consent as defence against charge of raping child under 16

I had that too. Fortunately my impassioned plea to restore the pages was successful very quickly. MN is unusable on my iPad at the moment.

I honestly didn't think they could fo that anyway. I thought the whole point was anyone under 16 cannot consent . This becomes a grey area only where both participants are teenagers.

DuncinToffee · 16/06/2025 18:00

This is from the report

The report says that despite the age of consent being 16, it found "too many examples of child sexual exploitation criminal cases being dropped or downgraded from rape to lesser charges where a 13 to 15 year old had been ‘in love with’ or ‘had consented to’ sex with the perpetrator". It recommends the law is "tightened up so that an adult having penetrative sex with a child under 16 is rape, no excuses, no defence".
