A general election is a long way off. A general election campaign will mean some scrutiny of the Reform manifesto, though never enough for them or all political parties. Enough people will hopefully realise it is fantasy economics and be put off by comparisons with Liz Truss's 'fiscal event'.

The interesting thing about the next GE is that Labour and Tory’s are likely to be on the same side - against reform!

No idea why my post was hidden - it was just the updated Tax Policy Associate paper.

Same happened to me on a different thread, that's why I posted the bluesky link Confused

It probably tripped MNs AI-powered filters.

Jenrick being trolled by his speech writer(s)?

https://bsky.app/profile/dorianlynskey.bsky.social/post/3lsbo2ibfuk2l

From the very same paragraph in Orwell's essay: "England has got to be true to herself. She is not being true to herself while the refugees who have sought our shores are penned up in concentration camps, and company directors work out subtle schemes to dodge their Excess Profits Tax."

A reply to this post

Peroration from Robert Jenrick’s speech at the Roger Scruton conference today:

“In the words of George Orwell, ‘nothing ever stands still. We must add to our heritage, or lose it. We must grow greater or grow less. We must go forward or backward.’ I say, let’s go forward.”

Yuck. Conservatives quoting Orwell ought to be beyond the pale

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/jun/23/labour-mps-launch-major-rebellion-to-stop-benefits-cuts-bill
Labour MPs have launched a significant rebellion against the government’s benefit cuts with an amendment that could kill its welfare bill, spearheaded by senior select committee chairs.
The amendment – which sources said could be signed by up to 100 MPs – declines to pass the government’s welfare changes and calls for a pause, including for further consultation and for support to be in place before any further cuts are made.

Happy Independence Day 🥳

Thete's a science fiction short story called The Liberation of Earth by William Tenn. Can't think why this reminds me of that.

That is a crap list. How is it ordered ? Shoe size ?

PickAChew · 24/06/2025 09:53

Probably in the order they signed it.

Had to scan for a while before I saw my MP's name near the bottom.

No use to man nor beast.

CBA to scan it myself. And ChatGPT is having a bit of a breakdown. Apparently I am bullying it.

Notonthestairs · 24/06/2025 10:05

I haven't read the wording of the reasoned amendment, the Guardian has outlined what it contains -

"The aim would be to pass a so-called “reasoned amendment”, which halts the passage of a bill. It means the bill would not pass its second reading, saying that provisions “have not been subject to a formal consultation with disabled people, or co-produced with them, or their carers".

It also says the bill should not pass until the Office for Budget Responsibility can publish its analysis of the employment impact of the changes this autumn. The amendment adds that most of the additional employment support funding will not be in place until the end of the decade.

It notes the government’s own impact assessment estimates that 250,000 people will be pushed into poverty as a result of the provisions, including 50,000 children. It calls for an assessment of the impact of the changes on health or care needs and for the conclusion of other reviews.

The amendment would need to be selected by the speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, and gain the support of opposition parties to pass, and there is no guarantee of either."

Seems reasonable to wait for the analysis to come through.

PandoraSocks · 24/06/2025 10:30

I had a good read of the IA. Those most likely to be adversly affected by the changes are people over 30, people with physical disabilities and females.

Doesn't quite fit the narrative of targeting lazy young people with pretend mental health conditions, does it?

Mine is missing too. He’s usually a good guy but I don’t think he has rebellion in him.

PandoraSocks · 24/06/2025 10:49

My MP didn't sign it either.

itsgettingweird · 24/06/2025 12:12

Listening to R4 and an interview with Trump.

He full on said the countries are so ingrained in their war they’ve lost sight of “what the fuck they are doing”. (Paraphrased until quoted part).

I rarely even listen let alone agree to anything Trump said but on this occasion a lot of what he said was spot on his his swearing outburst was actually just what the description of the situation needed.

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2025 12:46

Yeah actually I think that's interesting from Trump. He is generally war averse (as an isolationist) and it is intriguing here that he blames Israel (and Iran a bit too) rather than the default 'Israel good/ Iran bad' we, and certainly Netanyahu, might expect. He is like a headteacher knocking two kids' heads together.

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2025 13:22

Did he just realise he got played?

He’s right. But it would have been better to articulate this before now.

i imagine this reflects exactly what his Middle East advisors will have been saying for some time.

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2025 13:29

I think Netanyahu knows exactly what he’s doing.

Trump lost the MAGA crowd
