The taxi loophole is mentioned. Surely all taxi and minicab licensing should follow the same standards across the country? Bus drivers have one licence regardless of where they work.

This is from the report

The report says that despite the age of consent being 16, it found "too many examples of child sexual exploitation criminal cases being dropped or downgraded from rape to lesser charges where a 13 to 15 year old had been ‘in love with’ or ‘had consented to’ sex with the perpetrator". It recommends the law is "tightened up so that an adult having penetrative sex with a child under 16 is rape, no excuses, no defence".

Well, that's pretty shocking. Presumably this happened at police or CPS level. Shameful.

Same here, was also put in the infinite scrolling test three blinking times got removed then promptly put back in very irritating.

I've only been in infinite scrolling once and my MN behaves on all my devices, but the infinite scrolling experiment just makes no sense - what's the point? It's torture. Are there really loads of people who like it?

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2025 18:34

How do Ubers fit in there?

Yes it is. The law is clear enough. What it means is institutional failure by the police and CPS who decide not to go ahead with a charge on that basis. This is not a loophole, it’s a clear bias by the institutions that decide to make charges. Shameful.

Putting this into law will stop this, but it’s because of the people who claim to protect children like the police or the CPS that it’s needed. I would be looking very hard at the individuals who made these decisions- loophole my foot.

Casey called it 15 years of national failure

I don’t doubt it but those recommendations from the Jay report could have been implemented years ago.

As for children consenting to sex underage this defence has been around for decades. I am staggered that the authorities don’t see it for what it is. It makes me actually worried about the quality of the CPS and police involved in these cases. It is literally what every paedophile says, and every abuser. Awful.

They are minicabs for licensing purposes.

I’m away in the big smoke for a night. Just been to see Carmen at the Royal Opera House. Fantastic musicianship. I’m staying in Whitechapel and just walked back to my hotel surrounded by what some would describe as ‘fighting age’ muslim
men. The only interaction I had was when one apologised because we got in each others way, so I see no dilution of British values there.

Today MPs will be voting on the decriminalisation of abortion in England and Wales.

He even made silure they weren't wearing matching outfits, this time.

DuncinToffee · 17/06/2025 09:00

He also picked up the papers that Trump dropped, papers looked a bit blank

They probably are quite light on details! I don’t really know if this deal is an actual legally binding treaty… you don’t usually sign those on the sidelines!

And there is the Trump factor of unpredictability, he changes his mind on a whim.

I think we need to forget the concept of "legally binding" when it comes to the US. And I am aiming directly and all and any companies or individual that choose to do business with or in the US.

With the abolition of Congress, a flick of an EO can simply undo any previous undertaking (see also: sovereignty of Parliament).

@cardibach My daughter lives in Whitechapel. I love visiting and the diversity is so refreshing. Never feel threatened.

bombastix · 17/06/2025 11:29

Badenoch is having a press conference to criticize the Labour Government over their inaction on the child abuse gangs; with victims.

There is definitely a lot of criticism to go around, and accountability to be held against those who did nothing. But I am not sure Badenoch is the right person to do it, as her government did nothing in effect.

I hope Casey is implemented; but I have my doubts as to the usefulness of the inquiry in terms of dealing with people who made the decisions they did. The government should act now - most of the issues in the Jay and Casey reports are not new.

placemats · 17/06/2025 11:45

So still having issues with the updates on this thread unless I login. If I don't login this is what I get.

Presumably really focusing on the inaction 2010 to 2024, I imagine ?

placemats · 17/06/2025 11:51

Maybe Badenoch should apologise on behalf of the Tory Government's inaction on the matter? (I won't hold my breath.)

DuncinToffee · 17/06/2025 11:52

It would be so much better if she just supported Labour in implementing the Jay recommendations and the new investigation.

If there is ever a topic to agree on, this surely would be top

(don't expect her to apologise for her governments inaction)

OP posts:
BIossomtoes · 17/06/2025 11:52

Has Badenoch ever apologised for anything?

SerendipityJane · 17/06/2025 11:54

That should be the very first question out of the trap when the conference takes questions (it won't).

"Is this an apology for the failure of government 2010-2024 ?"

Or even better:

"So shall I report that you are 'sorry' or 'deeply sorry' for the failings in government 2010-2014 ?"
