None of that matters, it's all about the feelz

I see Badnoch has called for an end to the oil and gas windfall tax Confused

It's beyond irritating that the media has been allowed to collude with these companies and peddle this bollocks of "we can't invest because of the windfall tax".

Tax is what you pay after you invest. If you are paying tax before you invest then you need better accountants.

On a different note - I do wish the press (including the BBC) would stop referring to Georgia Harrison as ‘the Love Island star’ when reporting her MBE. She’s got it for her work campaigning against sexual abuse, including contributions to the Online Safety Act. Whether she’s also done reality tv is irrelevant.

i get that it’s why she’s famous. But they seem to be picking in Love Island in a deliberate way. It’s not the only reality tv she’s done.

Posting this just in case

A widely shared video claims to show a large number of asylum seekers on a Dover beach.

But the footage isn’t from Dover. It appears to have been filmed on a popular beach in Goa, India.

Does she object ? And if she did would it matter to the press and public ?

I am sure there is a clever short story to be written about a world where a person is given the power to know how they will be remembered, and spends the remainder of their life trying to avoid what they were told ... doing good works, giving away their fortune, building schools, hospitals, hosting peace treaties. Only for their epitaph to be what happened the day they died which would have to be something excoriating and fantastic that it eclipses their good reputation.

Maybe ask ChatGPT to write it for the next Dr. Who.

Anyway, there is some sort of point here. In the US Trump is pathetically telling the waves of his tattered reputation to go back ... you don't get to choose what you are remembered for.

cardibach · 14/06/2025 11:21

No, I guess so, and maybe she doesn’t mind. It just seems all the focus is on her bikini clad adventures and little on what she actually got the MBE for. I’m probably being unreasonable and touchy about it!

What a surprise, now the weather has got warmer and mild again another 1371 migrants have crossed the channel in the last 3 days with 919 arriving yesterday.

Rachel Reeves is pledging even more money to tackle this problem, will it make any difference? I doubt it.

It's just ridiculous.

I really don’t care. Go and report it on a thread where they’ll join you in your outrage.

Do you have any other hobbies?

Saucery · 14/06/2025 12:53

Are we processing asylum seeker claims more quickly now? I have a feeling we are, but I cba to search for stats just so said stats can be ignored by Stop The Boats - ers.

Ah I see so it's OK to post on this thread when there are no boat crossings but not ok to post when there are. Ok then, understood I'll leave you to your echo chamber.

I have enjoyed the cat pictures though.

This thread is not all about you and your single issue which you want to bring up over and over again with the regularity that my severely autistic DS tells me that we need to buy more peanut butter. It's about the whole range of British government and factors that may or may not influence it, along with a bit of off topic chat.

If this is not to your liking you may find more edifying discussion elsewhere. You would, however, struggle to get the attention you so desperately crave in a thread that is actually about immigration.

Saucery · 14/06/2025 13:07

I think this question has been asked before but I don’t recall you answering it @2dogsandabudgie , so forgive me if you have.
What would you like Labour to be doing to stop the boats? Afaik their tactic is to make it an unviable prospect by quickly processing asylum claims and returning those who don’t qualify to their respective countries. This will not happen overnight.
They can’t Pop The Boats - they’d be willfully killing people if they did that.
They can’t force France to put more money into policing their end.
They can’t order RNLI or anyone else not to assist the boats because that’s obviously inhumane and those organisations will quite rightly tell them to get stuffed.

So, what are they not doing that you really, really want them to do?

You seem a bit tetchy today.

And you still seem to be a one issue obsessed poster, but hey...

Permit me to remind you that the arrivals by boat are a tiny, tiny % of the total number of immigrants arriving in the UK each year. No idea why people are so laser focused to the point of obsession with this group. Now that is ridiculous.

If you really want to expend the energy in a debate like this (who knows, you may need the benefits of exercise you can only gain from pointless activities) the be aware it really is a Sisyphean task. You'll get to within an inch of sense and then from nowhere an extra twiddle will appear.

It's much easier and efficient to start with the assumption you will never get a straight answer. Then at least your expectations aren't too high.

Fans of Brexit will remember similar exercises where some posters after accepting they were wrong, but would still have voted to Leave, finally admitted that whatever the reality - even if being in the EU meant free goats and a months holiday in Scarborough - they just didn't want foreigners in the UK. We knew this because every single discussion descended into quoting immigration figures.

You know what ? If the schools teach, if the hospitals teach, if children don't go hungry, if every subject can feel secure, safe and valued ... if we can all work to that than I give no fucks how many people may - or may not - "come over here". And that sentiment has been honed over decades of learning how we are still effectively ruled by a bunch of Norman invaders who - unlike todays immigrants - most definitely didn't pass a citizenship test.

The biggest irony is (again, challenging my atheism) is that the single most effective way to deter immigration for all time would be if the people so vexed by it forced the UK to speak anything other than English.

Just hang a banner on the cliffs of Dover 欢迎来到英国 - that'd solve it.

I don't care either. I do obviously care about the safety of the people arriving on boats, but if the boats stopped tomorrow for good, it would not make one iota of difference to the problems the UK has.

placemats · 14/06/2025 14:36

The same way we stopped the Beaker people. And the Phoenicians. And the Gauls. And the Romans. And the Saxons. And the Vikings. And the Normans. And the French. And the Dutch.

Or course.

No wonder right wingers think we are thick .

It isn't an echo chamber here, but you seem to be a one issue poster on these threads and I think many of us find it a bit tedious.

Why don't you set up a thread dedicated to the number of crossings each day? I am sure it would get plenty of attention.

SerendipityJane · 14/06/2025 14:45

Most of us here care about making everything better for all - regardless of whatever labels you care to use.

The rest only care about making it better for themselves - regardless of whatever labels you care to use.

Would that be a fair précis ?

Exxactly. This isn't an echo chamber - the poitical affiliations of the regular range across a wide spectrum.

It is also not a single issue thread. If all you ever post about is one issue, taking no interest and nor responding to discussions on any other topics, this may not be the place for you.
