According to the Times parents and private schools have lost their legal battle against VAT on fees in the High Court.

Has the option to go to a judicial review now.

I look forward to the Venn diagram of "people who complained about judges making law" and "people who are backing this move". For there, in the centre, you will find the hypocrites you were looking for.

Private schools lose High Court challenge over Government's VAT on fees policy

The court has dismissed claims that introducing VAT on private school fees is 'discriminatory'

Imagine the outrage if (for example) the Muslim Council of Britain harboured such vile bellends ?

Incidentally, how come Farages volte face about integration not been picked up ?

He said: "It has to be someone who has lived and is settled in the country, paid taxes and obeyed the law, If they've done that for five or ten year period then I think they've every right to say they're part of the community."

Short thread on the PS Vat decision

https://bsky.app/profile/shoaibmkhan.bsky.social/post/3lriatb4kks2i

Court dismisses challenge to imposition of VAT on private school fees. ECHR A1P1 (Right to Education) not breached, as States have broad discretion provided they don't "impair the very essence" of right to education. The right is to access existing education systems, not to go to particular schools.

It'll have to be rejected on appeal, but then I look forward to all the apologies that aren't forthcoming.

Imagine the fucking nerve of a court to make loads of MN posters look rather idiotic. There should be a law against it.

SerendipityJane · 13/06/2025 16:51

Funny.

When there was nothing to report on the private school VAT changes, there was a "new" thread every hour trying to flood MN with the narrative about it being .... well I've forgotten what their point was. It was very confused.

Now that is some news, and the silence is deafening. And it's real news too, not just what someone in the Express thinks about something they saw in the Telegraph.

DuncinToffee · 13/06/2025 18:20

And it is a Brexit bonus, no celebrations from the brexiteers?

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 13/06/2025 18:20

Parliament is sovereign.
I dont suppose this will stop the Telegraph etc from producing more made up articles on the subject.

DuncinToffee · 13/06/2025 18:21

There will be more 'leave the ECHR' no doubt

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 13/06/2025 18:29

Not sure how that would solve anything - Parliament would retain tax raising authority.

Rejoining the EU would be a better means to that end.

DuncinToffee · 13/06/2025 18:38

None of that matters, it's all about the feelz

I see Badnoch has called for an end to the oil and gas windfall tax Confused

Nothing to do with donors is it? I seem to remember Neil Record (Net Zero Watch) was one of her main backers.

School holiday meals for more children who are most in need thanks to transformative support package

Children most in need across the country will be kept from going hungry during the school holidays thanks to funding announced in the Spending Review.

It's never going to happen.

Mind you, I said that about the Referendum and Brexit.

placemats · 13/06/2025 19:05

The Government has to do something about Israel although it's probably very tactical to watch and wait until after the forthcoming elections.

What does she suggest replacing it with?

Nothing

Thought so. I suppose it’s beyond stupid to ask what she intends cutting to pay for it.

BIossomtoes · 13/06/2025 19:08

What does she suggest replacing it with?

I would hazard a guess at nothing.

Has she made any suggestions to do anything at all? Seems all her suggestions are to stop doing what’s being done - even things that have continued from what the Tory’s themselves set up.
