Have any of you visited some of the deindustrialised towns in the north ? Would you like to live here ? I’m not blaming migrants for the state of the UK, entirely Tory austerity to blame but you seem to be belittling how some ordinary wc people rightly or wrongly feel.

Honestly you can get knotted with that accusation.

I was the one who posted the UNICEF study about child poverty which very specifically affects those towns and cities. Did you read it? Do you have anything to add or contribute.

I spend every day in a rage about wealth inequalities.

Piggywaspushed · 10/06/2025 18:16

I do also want to ask frugalit whether you have been to Hemel Hempstead?? I'm not convinced 'nice town' would be the first description. Did you choose it for sonorous effect??

https://www.standard.co.uk/business/business-news/union-membership-increases-in-reformled-councils-b1231910.html

Reform UK is increasing Union membership. Particularly in Northern areas.

Good. At last there’s some positive news about them.

Frugalit · 10/06/2025 18:30

@Piggywaspushed Ah yes, the thread for civilised discussion. Nice one. Life long labour voter, remainer and would never ever consider Reform. That’s me told ever trying to put a nuanced view forward.

What is your problem ? Oh I’m a thick racist, why would I understand the word sonorous ?

Piggywaspushed · 10/06/2025 18:35

I don't understand how your post follows on from mine frugalit, tbh.

Did you read the UNICEF report? I linked it a few pages back.

I care deeply about the treatment and experiences of people in deprived communities . You seem to think that is your preserve and that only you understand. That isn't awfully nuanced.

Not sure the relevance of your voting patterns. I didn't assume you were a Reform/Tory voter. I just assumed you think you know more.

I was brought up in Red Clydeside FWIW.

Ermmm. I didn't call anyone thick or racist and couldn't think of a better word. Why did you pick Hemel ??

2dogsandabudgie · 10/06/2025 18:37

PickAChew · 10/06/2025 16:30

No, really, you seemed quite flummoxed by the idea, last week. That busy week was all Labour's fault and you made no link to the atrocious weather last spring. You had it spelled out to you, in fact.

You've lost me there, are we talking about the 1000+ that came over recently because someone on here mentioned only 4 French officers against 100 migrants trying to get in one boat and I said there should be more officers.

No one has called you thick or racist on this thread.

Piggywaspushed · 10/06/2025 18:39

Especially not me, miss!

Why are you so aggressive. I never said I knew more than anyone, entirely in your head. And if you care so much about people in deprived communities, get over the superior attitude. It really won’t go down well.
I guess you didn’t read the article I posted from the Bolton news either. If you knew anything you’d be aware that certain northern towns were hit hardest by austerity already, they were already struggling to carry out basic public services because of a historical imbalance of funds from central government, more so than the south.

Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief now

🔴The ‘Millionaire Exodus’ the UK Media Told You About Never Actually Happened

The equivalent of 30 stories a day were published about an exodus of wealthy people that a new study finds was “non existent”

I did actually frugal. I always read links!

It was you who asked whether anyone on this thread had been to any of the deprived Northern towns and claimed an insider expertise.

I really don't want to argue with you. I am not an arguer. I just don't like your implication that we are all soft southerners from apparently lovely places like Hemel. And there was absolutely nothing aggressive about my post which you called aggressive.

I'll stop wondering about Hemel. It has a crazy roundabout to keep intruders in a state of alarm as they enter. And leave it. And enter again.

It's been a few weeks since we have been accused of something

Is that the Dutch style one?

I also read the really interesting post about why some councils end up with disproportionate numbers of migrant residents. That was food for thought.

No, this is quite old.

It's infamous.

It’s the Magic roundabout. I nearly shat myself the first time I drove round it.

Here it is.

The sign is a thing of legend.

Legend/horror.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Hemel and dread the bastard roundabout.

I nearly stopped at the 5th roundabout just to have a cry.

The someone who mentioned there were only 4 officers was obviously not posting in good faith. Most of us realised that.

pointythings · 10/06/2025 19:00

In terms of the Austria school shooting - it is no coincidence that Austria has some of the most lax gun laws in the EU.
