How long were you engaged before you got married?

Just that really…
Wondering if my engagement is beyond the average! Google said 15 months which doesn’t seem long to plan a wedding to me!

About 3 years. We were busy buying our first property and trying to save up again.

Lookingforwardto2025 · 02/06/2025 18:01

9 months. Personally I wouldn't want longer than a year but I believe that anything up to two years is very normal.

Cavello · 02/06/2025 18:02

11 years

ramonaquimby · 02/06/2025 18:02

6 months
engaged at xmas
married in summer

Imadesomething · 02/06/2025 18:03

10 months but it was a long time ago and the norm at that time.

TheNightingalesStarling · 02/06/2025 18:03

2 years. We were rather young (22&24) and needed to get careers etc into a better place

Cynic17 · 02/06/2025 18:05

8 or 9 months. But it was in the Olden Days, when weddings were much simpler. But you can book a ceremony much sooner than that, and then take your guests to a restaurant, so it kind of depends on how fancy you want it to be.
My in laws did it in 4 months in 2016.
Other in laws did it in 6 weeks in late 90s, and both had (say) 50 to 70 guests, proper white wedding dresses and a full "sit down" reception.

Alltheoldpaintings · 02/06/2025 18:05

2 months. Small (40 guests), registry office and pub lunch, bought a dress off the rack. But then I never dreamed about a big fancy wedding, so didn’t feel the need to take longer.

tillyandmilly · 02/06/2025 18:06

25 years!!

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 02/06/2025 18:06

9 months, but had been together for 10 years when we got engaged. Nine months was fine to plan a wedding!

ColinCaterpillarsNo1Fan · 02/06/2025 18:07

Engaged for 6 months and planned the wedding in that time. Perfectly doable, if you want to get married then just do it. All this faffing around with colour coordination & favours takes away the real reason for marriage.

A couple I knew were engaged for 3 years and by the time they got married a few of their elderly relatives had died. They had got fed up of arguing over trivial wedding related stuff with each other. They separated six months after the wedding and divorced 2 years afterwards.

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 02/06/2025 18:07

3-4 months, registry office.

redgingerbread · 02/06/2025 18:08

7 months. We just cracked on and got it all organised - we didn’t have a particularly elaborate vision but it was lovely!

AnnaMagnani · 02/06/2025 18:08

6 months. We wanted to be married more than we wanted a wedding.

morellamalessdrama · 02/06/2025 18:09

11 months

TeenToTwenties · 02/06/2025 18:09

6 months.

Ilovegoldies · 02/06/2025 18:10

6 months, met and married in 13 months. Definitely no repenting going on, my husband is amazing.

TakeMe2Insanity · 02/06/2025 18:11

6 weeks.
Both religious, so once we’d made out minds up we started organising our wedding.

Smartiepants79 · 02/06/2025 18:11

About 15 months. We’d been together several years and already owned a home together.
I don’t really get engagements that last longer than about 18 months. That’s plenty of time to plan a wedding.

GooseOnMyGrave · 02/06/2025 18:11

5 months.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 02/06/2025 18:11

16 months

ThomasShelbysfagend · 02/06/2025 18:12

Didn’t bother.
No point, no money, (pouring our money into renovating our house) no plans to do anything other than get wed when we could.
Question asked late July, wedding at registry office in early October.
No fuss, no frills, didn’t tell anyone until the week before.

If I’m honest, neither of us like fuss or being centre of attention so it was good.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 02/06/2025 18:12

10 months.

Smartiepants79 · 02/06/2025 18:12

tillyandmilly · 02/06/2025 18:06

25 years!!

Can I be nosy and ask why?? Did it bother either of you to wait such a long time?

FTIVF25 · 02/06/2025 18:13

20 months. Engaged at end of Jan, not enough time to plan a large destination wedding that same year and we also had so many people getting married that year too so we married the following year, it flew by!
