Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

Despite being incredibly disorganised in my day to day to life, I am thr queen of packing. The adhd takes over and i draw up some fancy packing grids on paper with how many of everything everyone needs to take. They then bring it to me and I pack it and split everyone's clothes so they're all spread out among the cases so in the event of a suitcase going missing, everyone still has clothes!

The worst thing I've forgotten is the chargers for electric toothbrushes - no biggie because we just grabbed some normal toothbrushes for the week.

However I am also the queen of worrying I've turned everything off or locked up properly and almost every trip have to phone my neighbours to ask them to check.

I'm going on holiday tomorrow so this thread is making me a bit twitchy.

Dh is always forgetting shirts/pants/socks etc.

Worst I forgot was a bag that had a few toys and books for toddler ds. The tiny French in the middle of nowhere much holiday apartment/hut sized thing. The only kid friendly thing in there was a copy of ladybird book of Dumbo. Read over and over to ds.

I packed all th bags, DH put them in the car. Arrived at the airport and he'd left a bag behind - the one with the travel cot and other baby stuff in it for our then 6m old DS. He ended up sleeping on a mattress on the floor, in a pillowcase!

You put your baby in a pillowcase?! 😱

PointsSouth · 29/05/2025 19:59

In all the confusion of bags and kids and unallocated responsibilities, we left a baby on a plane once. I mean, we only got as far as the start of the bridge thing, but even so, it was mortifying to have to go back onto the plane saying, 'Sorry, sorry - forgot the baby."

And the problem is....? I doubt she put him in head first!

We had the same in Crete. Asked in so many men's clothing shops but no, nobody sold any. So mysterious, where do Cretan guys buy their underwear? DH was washing his one pair of boxers in the sink daily.

We forgot our holiday spending money once. And the tickets to a show on a weekend away (we were halfway there and drove back home for them - I thought DH had them, he thought I did. Now I always pick them up!)

We now have holiday check lists and don't really forget stuff <touch wood>

I'd planned a weekend in Edinburgh, hotel on the way up, tickets for the first night of the tattoo, tickets for the Da Vinci exhibition at Holyrood and an afternoon tea in a city hotel. The Friday before we were due to go our daughter rang at about 3pm, Did you say you had tickets for the first night of the Tattoo? Yes. Well, it's tonight, not next week! Panic ensued, Tattoo tickets were indeed for 'tonight', luckily all the other things were for next weekend. The Tattoo office could resell our tickets, at a cost, but she said the only tickets for next Saturday were not seated together, which seemed to be a good idea!

As a teenager, family were setting off for our first trip abroad. Df was getting more annoyed with me by the minute because I was anxious, nervous and kept asking if he had the passports, the tickets, the money. He just snapped at me yes, stop going on.

Got to the airport and he'd forgotten his wallet, so no money. No credit cards. He didn't speak to me for a while after that!

He didn’t speak to you??? Was it not HIS fault?

T1Dmama · 30/05/2025 11:44

I’m generally pretty good… always stand and lay everything out on the bed and literally go over my body thinking ‘pants, bras, tops, trousers etc…. do same for daughter.. but after her type 1 diagnosis I’m highly stressed about forgetting the super important things for her .. making sure we have packed spares if everything she needs, then I pack spare spares… 😂… so in recent years I’ve forgotten things for myself, nothing huge, but annoying little things like:
Hairbrush/Tweezers/Towel…
Worst thing was - I forgot my pill, realised day one, called doctors and asked for prescription to be sent to a pharmacy near me (holidaying in U.K.) Doctors receptionist made it her decision that contraception isn’t deemed as important so it would be processed in 5-7 days… Luckily it can now be bought over the counter, cost me a fortune for just one weeks worth which I did resent being that contraceptive is free usually… and was a pain as we had to walk quite a way to get it, but as I was taking it to stop me practically haemorrhaging daily I couldn’t go without it!
Luckily other than that only forgotten things that I could easily buy while away

fetchacloth · 30/05/2025 13:07

My parents left a suitcase and a rucksack behind once. 😵‍💫
Luckily they were on holiday in the UK so I was able to bring these to them the next day.

Londonmummy66 · 30/05/2025 13:08

DD - early 20s - went abroad for a competition - took performace clothes but packed no underwear/nightwear or socks.................

sueelleker · 30/05/2025 15:11

T1Dmama I hope you reported her when you got back? She has no right to decide which medicines are essential.

Me too. Focussed on packing the kids’ stuff and totally forgot my pants. Not a single pair! Fortunately French supermarkets sell plenty!

Ah, French knickers

jillb55 · 31/05/2025 12:13

My shoes. I was still wearing my slippers at the airport.

Justploddingonandon · 31/05/2025 19:08

Forgotten a hair brush more than once.
Did once forget my contraceptive pill on a work trip. Initially thought no biggie as DH wasn’t there, but also hadn’t brought sanitary towels.
Not actually forgotten but once left my passport in a toilet cubicle at Heathrow. The immigration queue had been really long and I was bursting for the loo, so rushed in with it still in my hand. No idea why I put it down on the loo roll holder rather than in my bag but then left it. Fortunately the next person found it before I finished washing my hands.

MixedBananas · 01/06/2025 10:10

Just last month! Baby Bjorn Carrier. Got near Gatwick realised and then quickly nipped into a local Argos and got a cheaply one. Was the worst decision ever was so crap! And awful to use and left bruises and marks on babys legs. As soon as we got home returned the craps to the store asap! Made me appreciate the Baby Bjorn carrier so much.

Ellmau · 01/06/2025 10:27

I lost my boarding card between security and the loo.

Luckily it turned out there was another counter after security, in the basement, where I could get it reissued.

Once back in the days before smart phones I left my passport and boarding pass in the toilet in Miami - it was a connecting flight between Mexico and the UK and I was exhausted so didn't know what I'd done with them . When I spoke to the flight attendant she was like 'sorry doll, you're in a baaaaad way, there's nothing we can do for you' 😬 thankfully some random woman found them and handed them in and I made it onto the flight with minutes to spare!

dysongirl · 01/07/2025 14:58

My Knickers lol
Luckily we were within reach of a penneys to buy more 😁
