Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

My contraceptive pill! It worked out quite happily 12 years plus 9 months later with our lovely Dd13

Me too! My case got overlooked as we departed from our London flat. Nobody noticed!

Travelled to Heathrow heading for Florida, went to check my huge case in and !!!!! Couldn’t go back for it!

It was December a long time ago, Snowy weather, so I was head to toe in warm clothing. Thick tights, velvet jacket, wool skirt, over coat. boots!

When we arrived Florida, for first 24 hours it was purgatory until we were settled enough to go shopping! I got an entire new summer wardrobe!

Same, sort of. Only it was all the children's clothes in a huge suitcase. My husband had lifted our one but somehow forgot to put theirs in the car. Only noticed when we arrived at our destination 5 hours drive later. Just had to go to Tesco's and pick things up.

Revolting
Why do you not wash the dogs food bowl immediately after they have eaten?

Because who does that! You obviously, and I guess a fair few people, but a lot don’t.

Someone I knew left her contraceptive pills at home, didn’t realise till they got to the ferry at Dover, they rebooked for a later ferry and went back for them. Not sure what excuse they made to their three teenage children 😳

’Mum has forgotten her important medication’. Or if they are open to each other ‘Mum has forgotten her Pills, you don’t want a baby sibling do you, so we had better go back for them!’

I can see why he's your ex. Why didn't he flush every time immediately after using, the dirty bugger?

Water companies encourage you to not flush when it is only a wee, to save water. There is a rhyme for it but I forget!

DH not me. He headed off to the other side of Europe towing a boat but leaving the boat seats behind. DS and I were meeting him there by plane, I had to unpack most of our clothes and bring the seats in the luggage. I was not pleased!

I’m going to need a visual - I have no clue how that would work?! How big was the boat?? I’d also have just booked the seats their own suitcase, DH would’ve known better than to moan about extra baggage fees over me and the kids leaving our stuff behind

StellaLaBella · 29/05/2025 03:12

When it’s yellow, let it mellow. When it’s brown, flush it down 🤣

Oh I’m renowned for my holiday disasters!
Went to Riems, France with friends and DH and I both thought we’d put my case in the car… he had clothes for 5 days. I didn’t 😔
Left a whole drawer of jumpers/tshirts in a drawer in a hotel in Spain in February and only realised when we got back 🙄
Forgot to take the kids’ coats to the Norfolk Broads in October. They were 2 and 4 😳 Had to buy them new ones.
Went away for a weekend and forgot the dog’s collar and lead. Again… had to buy new ones.
Told my Dad we were back a day before we were and he phoned from Gatwick to see where we’d got to. We were on loungers by the pool and he had to come to the airport again the next day to collect us 😕 That went down well… not!
DH broke a finger on holiday in Cornwall banging the windbreak in 😳
DH mugged at the cashpoint in different part of Spain 😡 We now all stand around him like security guards if he takes money out 🤣
DS broke his arm on holiday in Scotland on his 10th birthday and had to stay in overnight to have it operated on 😳
Handbag stolen in Marseille 😡
…The list is endless!

I’m amazed you guys leave the house tbh 🤣

Talking of what we leave behind and another thread on giving kids more responsibility …..that I thoroughly support

Our kids have been packing their holiday bags since they were ??? About 8 ish
One trip to France and
one of them just brought soft toys, swimming trunks and some pants
his twin did even better with rubber snakes but yes!! Some actual clothes.

I remember security at the airport pulling his carry on suitcase to one side and asking “do you have a snake in your bag” and my ds nodding “yes” 🤣🤣🤣 and then all the waiting passengers stepping away from us 😆

If you want your kids to be proactive holiday prepers start them young and let them make mistakes 😁

Went on honeymoon to the Maldives. Plane had just taken off for it's 12hr flight and I realised I'd left my contraceptive pill at home.
Not my finest hour! 🤦

Baby on the way?

Happyearlyretirement · 29/05/2025 09:17

Had booked a holiday cottage specifically because it allowed dogs. 2 hours drive arrived and neither of us had put the dog in the boot. Husband drove back to collect the dog as I unpacked with a nice glass of wine.

My brother in law decided he was going to turn everything off in a bid to save money. So he turned everything off. Including the freezer. Which was full of meat. SIL was not happy when they returned and he realised why turning off the freezer for two weeks won’t save you money.

I went on holidays with my DS, but my husband was joining us later. So I told him what to switch off. Luckily he said at that time, he will just switch off the main switch! And I was, 'Oh God no, fridge needs to stay on!' So luckily he didn't do it!
But he did leave some bag of 'whoknowswhat' near the bin that got rotten and we came back home to house full of little flies.

UnctuousUnicorns · 29/05/2025 10:19

I know, and I ignore it. Flush every time in this house.

Mollypolly123 · 29/05/2025 10:21

Went on holiday for 2 weeks, husband thought it a good idea to turn electric off to save money, when we came back , you can guess what sort of state all the food in the freezer was in 😫

Do people do this LOL 😂

IKR, it surprises me that people who are scrupulous about hygiene would have a dog. They are not clean animals.

Another contender for Most Unhelpful and Irrelevant Response of the Year.

I'll compile a list.

Dizzybet74 · 29/05/2025 11:04

I packed all th bags, DH put them in the car. Arrived at the airport and he'd left a bag behind - the one with the travel cot and other baby stuff in it for our then 6m old DS. He ended up sleeping on a mattress on the floor, in a pillowcase!

I once got so carried away with turning everything off at the wall I turned off the fridge-freezer too. Came back to a pretty unpleasant and smelly scene.

DH did that once, but iirc it was only a weekend so not too bad.
He’s put a bright orange plug on the freezer now, and we’ve sharpied an exclamation mark onto its switch.

Jack80 · 29/05/2025 14:21

I've forgotten swimming costume on a trip to Scotland. I've asked out daughters to put the bin out while we were on holiday and she forgot. Had to store bin bags in the blue bin till the black got emptied

alsohappenedoverhere · 29/05/2025 14:46

All of my clothes. I put everything on the end of my bed folded to go in my bag and arrived at my destination with a beach towel, toiletries and hair straighteners.
