Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

Why would they make an excuse?
Surely it is important to speak to teenagers about contraception?

Urgh, give over.
What poor teenager wants to hear about it's parents contraception.

isitmeamithedrama · 28/05/2025 21:02

I accidentally turned my fridge/freezer off last year that was fun having to clear it all up when I got in at 3am🤢

I left my mascara and that was a tragedy I was like a naked mole rat for the first 2 days til I got a replacement one

Revolting
Why do you not wash the dogs food bowl immediately after they have eaten?

What a ridiculous comment.

Elsvieta · 28/05/2025 21:29

I once got so carried away with turning everything off at the wall I turned off the fridge-freezer too. Came back to a pretty unpleasant and smelly scene.

Helpmechooseausername · 28/05/2025 21:32

Didn't realise that the dishwasher hadn't been run until it was almost time to set off. Didn't have time to wash up, so put the whole lot in the sink, filled it up with hot soapy water and left it.
Got home two weeks later and as we opened the door the smell hit us! It turned out that the plug wasn't that good so all the water had drained, leaving all the food debris and grease to fester in the sink for a fortnight in the summer. The whole lot had gone mouldy, even all the handles of the knives and pots and pans. Had to throw away everything. It took days for the smell to go!!

Got to airport and realised I left my phone at home, I have everything on it I need to travel. Fortunately I was with my son and we double up on boarding passes and he had to pay for everything. Somewhat took the edge off as I was treating him for the weekend.

We arrived a few years ago to our hotel in Greece and on opening the safe to put the passports and money in, found someone’s car key. It was a TUI hotel of which I was a member of the FB page so I handed to front desk and posted to see if anyone had left behind. The poor couple only realised when they landed back in the UK and they were a fair jaunt from their house from what I can remember

Edited

Oh no, that must have been awful for them. Can only hope they were able to get it sorted 💐

‘I left my pills at home’ simple if you are a bit of a pearl clutcher.

minimadgirl · 28/05/2025 21:37

Ex-h not me, but literally all his clothing and toiletries for a 4 day camping trip. All he had was what he was stood up in, not even a coat or jumper. He had presumed I would pack everything for him... obviously as I was his wife and he was not 5 years old, I did not.

Ex-h again, visiting friends to go clubbing (when you had to wear shirt, trousers and shoes to get in), what did he forget? Yup shirt, trousers and shoes, just took what he was stood up in again.

EconomyClassRockstar · 28/05/2025 21:44

We went away for a month and for some random reason DH turned off the fridge. In the freezer there was a sizable amount of seafood. OMG, cleaning that out was disgusting and the smell hit us as soon as we opened the front door.

Doggymummar · 27/05/2025 13:54

I switched the fridge off after emptying it to save electric

But

It was connected to the freezer and I got home after three weeks to a fiat full of bluebottles and it smelled of dead bodies. I can't believe no one had called the police, to look for a corpse. When I cleaned it up, I vomited frequently which was helpful. It also dropped all over the communal stairway and halls as I didn't want to take it in the lift. Noone said a word, it was weird.

Same thing happened to me. Flatmate shut the freezer and the smell I came back to after the holidays was horrific. The meat had rotted and looked magotty. This was in the middle of summer too.

Went away overnight for a James Bond themed birthday party. Had a killer dress and forgot (absolutely required!!) tit tape. Had to do an emergency diversion as there’s no way I would’ve been able to attend otherwise lol.

Purchased a new buggy and shade ( for our youngest aged 2 ) when going on a family holiday to Spain back in the early 80s. Dutifully left it propped up in the hallway near front door so as not to forget it. Rushing around the morning of the holiday, getting 3 kids plus luggage in the car, and having a moaner as a husband ( now ex) completely forgot the buggy, and ended up carrying the youngest around in the heat..

Nomorechipsforme · 28/05/2025 22:03

@Doggymummar I feel ur pain, husband did same thing. The smell was horrendous, especially rotting prawns 🤢. I am just glad I wasn't the culprit for turning it off, I would never of heard the last of it 😂

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 28/05/2025 22:04

Travelling home from a few days in London, I left my crutches behind at King’s Cross station.. I used them for literally everything, but that day had my wheelchair with me for the journey and left them in the accessible bathroom.. I had to get someone to buy me a new set before I got off the train six hours later (turns out the only place in my town to buy crutches on a Saturday afternoon is very randomly Argos!)

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 28/05/2025 22:05

We managed to leave a whole bag of supplies in the kitchen when we drove to France. We stopped for lunch at a picnic pull in on the French motorway and my husband was looking for some crisps which I said was in the bag with the vitamins. The bag was not to be found. Unfortunately the bag also contained my pills. I had to find a pharmacy pronto in rural France and try to find a bio equivalent😬. Nightmare!

Ritadeeter · 28/05/2025 22:07

We once took some sausage sandwiches in the car to eat on the way to the airport but I didn't each mine and left it in the car for a week. 🤢 We had to drive home with the windows open even on the motorway!

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 28/05/2025 22:13

I have arrived in rural Italy having forgotten pants, swimwear and the diffuser for the hairdryer.

I am very chunky, so generally cannot just walk into a shop and but clothes, especially swimwear…and this hair very much requires a diffuser 😂

DFriend is doing a midnight supermarket run before she joins me tomorrow morning 😬😂

labrador73 · 28/05/2025 22:17

I left my contraceptive pills and did not realise until we were in France in a remote gite. Not a happy time.

OneSunnyGoldDreamer · 28/05/2025 22:21

I went to the Cayman Islands and forgot all my bras. Only the dank sports bra I used for travelling. Everything there soooo expensive I couldn’t find a bra for days and had to keep washing it.

Dogs don’t always eat it all in one go.

OneSunnyGoldDreamer · 28/05/2025 22:24

Also forgot to mention. Went to Italy. Took my nice new boots which ended up being AWFUL and had forgotten my trainers or anything else.l and turns out the boots were too small. A full day of walking around Florence in agony with bleeding feet. Student days so hardly any money. Finally found some awful ballet pumps but they felt like heaven after the torture !

As a teenager, family were setting off for our first trip abroad. Df was getting more annoyed with me by the minute because I was anxious, nervous and kept asking if he had the passports, the tickets, the money. He just snapped at me yes, stop going on.

Got to the airport and he'd forgotten his wallet, so no money. No credit cards. He didn't speak to me for a while after that!

I work on basis you only truly need these things- passport, credit card, ticket boarding card (phone). Everything else can be bought.

That said the worse thing I did was leave my house keys in my office drawer (leaving from work, returning straight to work on overnight flights). Unfortunately I only remembered (whilst half way across the Atlantic) that I had added my samsonite luggage keys to the key ring and it took 3 days before I could get a replacement. Luckily ski gear was packed around skis. Bought some underwear and essentials.

I don’t lock luggage now and I also split clothes across bags so if one lost we all have enough for a few days.

gavisconismyfriend · 28/05/2025 22:28

Drove to the airport, left a blueberry smoothie in the footwell of the backseat by mistake. Car sat in baking sun in open air car park for a fortnight. Got into it to drive home and the car smelt yeasty. Then realised there was smoothie all over the windscreen, seats, everywhere. It had fermented in the sun and exploded!
