Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

Hairdryer. Took my hair straighteners but they were unable to tame the massive frizzy bush of hair I had after air drying. No shops to even buy a hairdryer. No hairdryers in the whole hotel. No hairdryers om the whole island. All the photos I look like I have had a massive fright or stuck my fingers in the electric socket.

Someone I knew left her contraceptive pills at home, didn’t realise till they got to the ferry at Dover, they rebooked for a later ferry and went back for them. Not sure what excuse they made to their three teenage children 😳

Why would they make an excuse?
Surely it is important to speak to teenagers about contraception?

Lucyccfc68 · 28/05/2025 19:34

Knickers.

Had a list, but obviously got distracted whilst packing. 2 weeks in Germany, so thank goodness for Primark (never shop in there at home, but the knickers were cheap and comfy)

Evenstar · 28/05/2025 19:35

@Tulipsontoast of course, but I am sure most teenagers would rather not know details about their parents contraception

Why do you not wash the dogs food bowl immediately after they have eaten?

Get a life.

The groundsheet on a camping holiday in the New Forest. Hello leaves underfoot. 😬

There’s a time and place though!

We also once got home to discover the freezer had died while we were on holiday. The smell was horrendous.

I agreed to feed a neighbours' cats while they were on holiday, but they were also in the middle of building an extension, so everything was a bit chaotic. I noticed there was a small puddle of water on the bare concrete kitchen floor, but just assumed the cats had somehow spilt it from their bowls. Turned out the neighbours had inadvertently unplugged the fridge freezer.

She may have been stressed getting sorted for holidays. Not exactly crime of the century to not wash the dogs bowl immediately. Not like she was serving the kids dinner in it later🤷‍♀️

Due to a badly ulcerated leg that wouldn't heal, my mum used to use a walking stick, but could walk a few steps without it. En route to our holiday on the east coast, she suddenly realised she had left it at home. My dad wasn't prepared to turn back, so as soon as we arrived, dad and I had to trawl round various shops in Lowestoft to find one for her. We did eventually find one in an antique shop, I believe. She has since passed, but I still have the walking stick.

FarmGirl78 · 28/05/2025 20:03

First trip abroad at 21, went to Australia. About half way to Manchester airport I realised I'd forgotten my credit card, which I would be paying for most of my spends with. Dad was fuming but drove me home. Nipped in, spotted something else minor I'd missed which was really lucky. Then back on the M6, towards the M62 and realised I'd STILL not got my credit card. To be fair to my Dad, he somehow kept his cool but the awkward silence lasted the whole journey home AND all the way back to airport for the 3rd time. 🤣

I once left mine and my sons contact lenses in a drawer in our hotel in Spain. Realised as we were boarding the plane.
Don’t put things in drawers when you’re not at home.

We arrived a few years ago to our hotel in Greece and on opening the safe to put the passports and money in, found someone’s car key. It was a TUI hotel of which I was a member of the FB page so I handed to front desk and posted to see if anyone had left behind. The poor couple only realised when they landed back in the UK and they were a fair jaunt from their house from what I can remember

Dahlia1234 · 28/05/2025 20:09

Went on honeymoon to the Maldives. Plane had just taken off for it's 12hr flight and I realised I'd left my contraceptive pill at home.
Not my finest hour! 🤦

Oh I’m renowned for my holiday disasters!
Went to Riems, France with friends and DH and I both thought we’d put my case in the car… he had clothes for 5 days. I didn’t 😔
Left a whole drawer of jumpers/tshirts in a drawer in a hotel in Spain in February and only realised when we got back 🙄
Forgot to take the kids’ coats to the Norfolk Broads in October. They were 2 and 4 😳 Had to buy them new ones.
Went away for a weekend and forgot the dog’s collar and lead. Again… had to buy new ones.
Told my Dad we were back a day before we were and he phoned from Gatwick to see where we’d got to. We were on loungers by the pool and he had to come to the airport again the next day to collect us 😕 That went down well… not!
DH broke a finger on holiday in Cornwall banging the windbreak in 😳
DH mugged at the cashpoint in different part of Spain 😡 We now all stand around him like security guards if he takes money out 🤣
DS broke his arm on holiday in Scotland on his 10th birthday and had to stay in overnight to have it operated on 😳
Handbag stolen in Marseille 😡
…The list is endless!

ExH and I went on a weekend break in May to a coastal resort in China (we lived there at the time). Arrived late afternoon to discover we had forgotten the suncream and there were no shops open on the resort. Figured it didn’t feel that hot and we would be ok to spend the afternoon and evening on the beach with no suncream on, then go to a shop in the morning. I was kind of OK, but pale skinned DH got burnt really badly on his legs and could only lie in the hotel room with the curtains drawn for the whole weekend…

My ex left all the money/travellers[ cheques (before we had credit cards) on the kitchen table. It was a group holiday and the others weren[t happy at having to bail us out...

Eyebrow tweezers.

Oh gosh, that is bad. I have about 5 pairs of tweezers in various locations, including my handbag so I'm never without - and mine are "everything tweezers" 😆

DrPrunesqualer · 28/05/2025 20:40

We left our kids passports at our holiday villa in Switzerland and only realised when we were trying to board the boat at Calais !

Baked beans are fantastic. There's nothing like them in French cuisine.

i can live without them for a fortnight and French food is lush.

TheEveningSun · 28/05/2025 20:50

My DDs (3) underwear, so she had to wear her brother’a (5). Then on the same trip I forgot to pack spare clothes for her on the day trip and she had a wee accident. I asked her brother to give her his boxer shorts and he went commando in his shorts 🫣 I know! So bad!

Sunriseoverthemeadow · 28/05/2025 20:51

Many years ago as a 19 year old, myself, Mother and best friend went away to a small seaside place. my friend who was a proper Goth/metal head and dressed that way forgot to take her new boots she'd just bought, so she only had an old pair of shoes, when we got down there the heel of one of them came off. and there weren't any clothes/shoe shops. and as she was two sizes larger than me I couldn't lend her my spare pair .anyway my Mother bless her heart offered to lend her a pair of her sandals(as she was the same size), bare in mind my mother was in her 50s at the time and quite old fashioned, I did find it funny as my mate spent the whole weekend walking around dressed as a goth while wearing an ugly ass pair of granny sandals.never seen her so embarrassed

I am normally naturally organised but I had a breakdown and couldn’t remember or organise anything. I went away for a weekend and had packed a sheer white top. Only took one bra and it was black 🤷‍♀️. I also forgot a hairbrush and a toothbrush but luckily I remembered toothpaste.

Can identify.
