Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

My everyday clear glasses. I left the house wearing my prescription dark glasses for two weeks abroad, and ended up peering at everything in dark restaurants...

Beautifulweeds · 28/05/2025 18:34

DH's boxers lol 😆 Camping trip and he had put them in a backpack. I thought they had been left there from before, took them out, and replaced with food.

100 miles from home on our way to the airport and Australia, I was convinced I had left the iron on. Quick call to our next door neighbour who kindly went round to check. The iron was unplugged, but we had left the front door wide open!

Do you similarily blush for shame at the Polish shelf in most UK supermarkets?

Fair point but baked beans…

We also once got home to discover the freezer had died while we were on holiday. The smell was horrendous.

That happened to my Mum. We managed to leave my husband's Ventolin inhaler behind once. Luckily we were still in England, so got a local pharmacy to ring our GP's surgery for a repeat prescription.

Baked beans are fantastic. There's nothing like them in French cuisine.

Revolting
Why do you not wash the dogs food bowl immediately after they have eaten?

Because clearly the dog hadn't finished eating? Hence food in the bowl.

My dear old mum had dementia and my dad was not always immediately clued in to how her needs changed over time. They arrived to stay for a week and Mum had brought plenty of trousers and knickers and 5 bras but only one spare top and two pairs socks. Cue my trip to the local M&S which, fortunately, was not far away.

Pliudev · 28/05/2025 18:44

My DH, who was on several different meds at the time, left the bag containing them at home. He realised when we were on our way but didn't confess until the following day when we arrived at Gatwick. He had decided to 'do without them' (blood thinners, blood pressure tablets, statins, heart!). Unbelievable. Equally unbelievable (but in a different way) was the airport pharmacist who provided an emergency supply and said it happened all the time.

The key to the roof rack which had all of our clothes, toiletries, dog food, and dog beds in, for a weeks self catering holiday.

When I was young and foolish I always forgot to bring a hair brush. It's always one of the things I always double check for now, along with passport and pants etc

I also used to forget pjs quite a lot, but that was easy enough to get round by wearing shorts and a t-shirt or whatever

I once forgot both my brush and my comb, going on holiday to France. So that was an interesting attempt to brush my hair with my toothbrush so that I could go to Monoprix and buy a comb!

I once left mine and my sons contact lenses in a drawer in our hotel in Spain. Realised as we were boarding the plane.
Don’t put things in drawers when you’re not at home.

MaySea · 28/05/2025 18:57

My mother once popped in to check on the house and didn't flush the toilet after her wee, she knows we don't every time to conserve water. When we got back it smelled like something had died under the floorboards!

There's always something every single camping trip. Usually the tea towel, but all my pants and socks was a good one. Or, on another occasion, my HRT 😬

Same - all my pants and socks. Remembered everything for the children but forgot mine! We were at a festival in the camper van, couldn’t get any replacements.

Wanttoeatallthecheese · 28/05/2025 19:02

My whole entire makeup bag on a week trip to Spain. Not cool when you're someone who loves to wear makeup everyday and feel 'not done up' without it!

mylefthand · 28/05/2025 19:03

My clothes!
To be fair, it wasn’t my fault. Was going away with parents to a UK caravan park. I drove down earlier in the day with my mum and children and Dad was following later as he was working that day.
With my children, mum and luggage in my small car, I did not have room for mine plus the extras we needed to take.
So dad said he’d pick them up from mine after work. I’d put all the stuff by the front door and he somehow missed my case.
Spent the first day of that holiday shopping for clothes haha.

Frillysweetpea · 28/05/2025 19:03

For myself, DH and I forgot to take any money to the registry office so my parents had to pay for our marriage certificate. 😬

Been there - done that - fortunately the local Specsavers were able to supply me a similiar prescription of contacts.

Lost my glasses on holiday once, dh had to drive all the way home (from Europe). Not good.

My husband left a bag with unidentifiable contain near the bin in the cupboard. I was already abroad so was not able to check the house before he left. When we returned in nearly two weeks time, I noticed little flies all over the kitchen. Hundreds of them! Of course the source was from that bag from the cupboard under the sink. I was up whole night killing it and it took me about 4 days to get rid of all of it.

I hate cassoulet beans. Just because something comes from your home country, doesn't mean it's bad. Or that you're parochial.

Absolutely agree! French baked beans can’t be described easily. The nearest I can get is ‘hard beans that look like baked beans in a watery, orange, tasteless juice’. They could be dished out in UK prisons as punishment at mealtimes!
Don’t get me wrong. I love French food and always make a point of trying new things when I’m there, but their baked beans are something else!
Their tea isn’t great either, but you can sometimes get English tea there in the larger supermarkets.

Soosi · 28/05/2025 19:12

Always make a list and tick off as you pack. Saying that I forgot my EIHC card this year going abroad luckily didn’t need it.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 28/05/2025 19:21

Current holiday (going home tomorrow) - my bastard bloody Prozac.

When I was 30 weeks pregnant with DS - my underwear. DH had to drive for 2 hours when we arrived to find a Mothercare that sold maternity knickers and bras.
