Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

Dp left all his undies at home, only had the pair he travelled in, I washed them out and locked myself out of the apartment, dp had gone for a run.
He'd actually filled his suitcase with heinz beans, bread, porridge, bacon, tea, coffee, whitener, sugar 🙄
We were in a resort in Greece with a mini market practically on every corner.
He was trying to save money (we're not skint)

Please tell me the food bit's not true. The UK shelf in French supermarkets makes me blush for shame.

Contraceptive pills, realised on the drive to holiday cortage, rang a local chemist they advised me to go to a local hospital for emergency supply, I went sat waiting for 2.5 hrs and gave up in the end, carried on to the cottage, unpacked, my pills were in my toiletries bag.

Do you similarily blush for shame at the Polish shelf in most UK supermarkets?

Forgot my raincoat when we went to Devon, luckily planned to stop at Clarks Village on the way so could pick up a cheap one.
Forgot my sunflower lanyard when we flew to Spain so had to explain to everyone at every stage why i couldn't use the stairs.
Was meant to go straight from work to the train station once and i forgot to pack extra shoes, luckily I worked on a retail park and just had time to pick up a cheap pair of trainers from Asda.

Locking wheel nut for car whilst, driving round France miles away. Had a puncture and had to have lock cut off and all replaced once we returned home.

I once complained to my exH about the mental load of always being the one to plan and organise holidays. So he planned one and took responsibility for all the checklisting. As we were leaving our house I asked if he had the passports, I got an eye roll … of course he did! We got to the airport and he had his, our two DDs but not mine 😂 He immediately said that we’d have to rebook and go back for the passport…this is a man who never stepped up as a Father. I refused and insisted he fly to our destination with our two DDs. He had to manage the DDs, the car hire, locate our accommodation, feed the DDs. I popped back to the house, went to the hairdressers, had a child free night and dinner at an airport hotel … was great 😂

My grandparents came to stay with us over Christmas, they live 3 hours away and left the bag of presents in their kitchen. Grandmother was distraught and couldn't stop crying. My poor uncle got dispatched into the night by his wife on Christmas Eve to do a 6 hour round trip to collect them.

They were not even Santa presents !!

True love that is bless them.

2 goldfish in their tank with an auto feeder. We got back from holiday to a horrible stink throughout the house, and one of the fish was floating upside down, very dead and very rotten! Must have died as soon as we went off on hols. That smell! 🤮

Bowies · 28/05/2025 17:57

We drove 3 hours to Glasgow airport flying to Orlando ( 2 weeks fly drive) and my husband had forgotten his driving licence. My brother went to our house collected it, jumped in the car and drove up towards Glasgow and my husband drove down. This was before mobile phones they arranged to meet in a motorway services. It ended well.

Forgot to put my bin out and the worst thing was a neighbour was cat sitting and rather than realising there was a smell and just putting the bin out, he just closed the kitchen door - we come home after 3 weeks in florida to a kitchen full of maggots, they were everywhere and it smelled like somebody had died for at least a week

1 flip flop and all my nice flowy pants. To make matters worse passport got stolen and the British embassy decided as I had no return flight booked I could wait until 15 days later for an appointment. Turned out to be an absolutely awesome experience but very expensive

Blablibladirladada · 28/05/2025 18:03

My passport…then I realised I was flying to another EU country and I had my ID card.

My blood went very cold for a few secs.

grownuplefthome · 28/05/2025 18:04

My DD left her thick snow jacket at school the day we were leaving to go to Lapland…. Panic ensued and a late night trip ensure to the airport to Mountain Warehouse.

theDudesmummy · 28/05/2025 18:16

DH not me. He headed off to the other side of Europe towing a boat but leaving the boat seats behind. DS and I were meeting him there by plane, I had to unpack most of our clothes and bring the seats in the luggage. I was not pleased!

Ellmau · 28/05/2025 18:19

I once forgot my medication when coming away for Christmas. Had to ring 111 and my home surgery who eventually, reluctantly, agreed to send an emergency precriptiion to cover the time I was away to the Boots in the town I was staying. It was Christmas Eve at a Christmas when the bank holidays worked out as 27 and 28 Jan so everything was shut down.

PurpleYarnivore · 28/05/2025 18:22

as a kid in the 70s we had some friends with a small boat. They sailed to France for a holiday and only realised when got there they’d left passports at home .

my parents went on holiday and we house sat for them . They live in the countryside and cats often bought mice and birds in so the smell that developed we thought was a decomposing creature somewhere … it turned out to be a joint of meat rotting under sink she’d forgotten about .

DuchessofSuffolk · 28/05/2025 18:31

My brother in law decided he was going to turn everything off in a bid to save money. So he turned everything off. Including the freezer. Which was full of meat. SIL was not happy when they returned and he realised why turning off the freezer for two weeks won’t save you money.
