Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

always leaving something behind…

A trip to France, dh forgot to pack any pants.

A holiday to the Isle of Wight realised that we’d left the camera on charge in the kitchen (pre smart phones).

Honeymoon, dh left nice shampoo and conditioner in the airport hotel, managed to buy shampoo but could not get conditioner, I looked like a scarecrow by the end of 2 weeks.

Came home last year to find out fish had not only died, but totally decomposed. It had been the size of my hand. Was floating around in pieces 🤢.

Flew to a wedding in the Czech Rep. having completely forgotten to pack any knickers. Went on a knicker hunt first thing next morning in Prague - have never been so pleased to see an M&S in my life - in Wenceslas Square.

Oh no! Poor you 😢.

How did you get round it?

It wasn't too bad really! We did have a few very small presents on us so the kids had those. Christmas was about the holiday rather than presents and they had their main presents when we got home. There was a bit of grumbling but it was short lived!

Sonolanona · 27/05/2025 23:17

I'm currently camping. We are seasoned campers.
I have accidentally brought only right eye contact lenses (my eyes are very different) so am wearing ancient glasses, and I forgot my wellies and after today my trainers are drenched and it's crocs til we go home!

Worst was DS1... He was off to Australia and less than 24 hours before his flight we realised his visa was digitally attached to his OLD passport as his got damaged and he had to renew it...so no visa. Not just a tourist visa so not a quick fix. He was in panic mode and I spent the night on the phone to Australia immigration, where thankfully a very nice lady got him the emergency paperwork sorted although he was held at customs for a few hours!
He has permanent residency there now thank heavens!

I se lots of people have forgotlen their underwear.

My DM once forgot to pack my DF's underpants. They were staying in a town where the only place you could buy any was really expensive - and she got his size wrong and bought them two sizes too small.

He squeezed into them but I don't think it was very comfortable.

She still does all the packing :)

I once packed the wrong sort of plug-adaptor for Italy. Luckily the hotel was obviously accustomed to it and lent me one for rest of Europe to Italy for the duration of my stay.

SunnyWarrington · 27/05/2025 23:50

The bung for the airbed on a camping weekend in the Italian lakes. First night we slept on lilos that we bought from the campsite shop. Not recommended for a comfortable night. Saturday afternoon, we saw some kids playing in the lake on an airbed just like ours... by the evening, they'd burst it and dumped it in the bin. Result! Liberated the bung and had a much better night 😎

Theunamedcat · 28/05/2025 00:05

I also forgot my coat I blame my (now ex) husband for that I literally packed everything and when it came to my own stuff he decided we needed to leave NOW NOW NOW! I was left with no clothes because he "accidentally" left mine behind first stop was a charity shop where I was able to source brand new undies and a spare tshirt but he wouldn't allow me to buy anything else so I had to make do

God it would have been easier to just not have sex 🤣🤣

For me it would have started my period which would ruin any trip for me.

Maddy70 · 28/05/2025 08:28

My luggage ... My case was left my the door fir my husband to put in the van . I went to work DH was collecting me from work in our camper van ... We drove 400 miles arrived at our destination late at night. I had absolutely nothing ...

DyslexicPoster · 28/05/2025 09:18

I think we have forgotten most things at some point. Currently on holiday and ds hasn't got his toothbrush.

Went to Brussels without 4 year old pjs so he wore his baby brothers.

Dh in Spain didn't take his underwear.

Didn't take a stroller to Ireland as toddler was walking. Had to buy one. We are very disorganised.

Worse thing was coming home to one of the fish in the pond dead. We could smell it as soon as we got out the car and the water had turned white.

Numnumbirdy · 28/05/2025 09:34

@IchBinPapst hope you (Dh) got to see them another time. I saw them last year and they were fab

Revolting
Why do you not wash the dogs food bowl immediately after they have eaten?

Oh to be so perfect…..

NeedWineNow · 28/05/2025 09:50

We went to Birmingham for a wedding. Halfway up the motorway I realised I’d left the toiletry bag, which also had my make up in, at home on my dressing table. Had a very limited time between arrival at our hotel and having to get ready and leave for the ceremony. Luckily the local shopping area had a small chemist where I was able to get toiletries and some makeup bits so we managed.

Last year we went to Greece for two weeks. Wound down the fridge as usual but completely forgot the tomatoes and half a cucumber that were in the hydrator - I remembered them when we landed and were on the coach to our resort. Amazingly when we got home we found that the cucumber was mushy as expected but the tomatoes were absolutely fine!

My DC's birth certificate, when traveling to a country that insisted that all children travel with their original birth certificate (which would apparently magically resolved child trafficking). It was a 12 hour flight, we live 2 hours from the airport, and despite arriving with 3 hours to spare we didn't have enough time to get home and back...and we were not allowed to board without it. We were allowed to travel the next day instead, but it was very stressful...

@Gumbo

South Africa?

South Africa?

Yup! I'm glad they've now dropped this insane system...

Do people do this LOL 😂

I always clean our dogs bowls after they have eaten..but before you all think I'm perfect....
They go in the dishwasher! I know this is frowned upon on here, and I couldn't give a fuck 😚
Draw the line at toilet brushes though

TessTickle0 · 28/05/2025 11:25

I seem to keep forgetting my youngest belongings.
Hol to Turkey forgot his toothbrush (hotel had disposable ones so no bother)
Hol to Lisbon forgot any spare shoes(glad the ones he had were comfortable enough for all the walking) plus forgot all his boxers...couldn't find any children's underwear in any shops either

I realised at Gatwick that I had done the same, good excuse to buy some Ray bans! As an aside, why do I lose/break Ray bans so often yet have many cheap and cheerful pairs that are ancient?

Monwmum · 28/05/2025 14:45

An entire suitcase 😔

tothelefttotheleft · 28/05/2025 15:35

@Theunamedcat

I'm glad that controlling fucker is your ex.

mickandrorty · 28/05/2025 16:26

All the kids toothbrushes and toothpaste. It was at centre parcs and I was knackered by the time we realised, off we go to the shop, didn't have it in me to argue when they all wanted a toothpaste each, nearly £20 on fucking toothpaste and brushes!

That night we lost water to the house we were staying in for 12 hours, they had nowhere else for us to go, my son got diarrhoea and we had to keep going out to the outside shower to fill buckets to flush the toilets. That made the toothbrush issue feel like much less of an issue 😂

MyPeppyTurtle · 28/05/2025 17:47

hahaha my husband did this!! I had to get the kids and suitcases ready, his only job was to put the suitcases in the car, and he left his behind!! No sympathy.

Cragbag · 28/05/2025 17:48

My rheumatoid arthritis meds. I couldn't replace it on the Isle of Man. I was in agony.
