Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

Revolting
Why do you not wash the dogs food bowl immediately after they have eaten?

Spare contact lenses AND glasses. Not my finest moment.

We were having our bathroom done, so would bathe DD1 in a baby bath in the living room. One day, just before going on holiday the next morning we managed to knock it when lifting her out and it went all over the thick carpet we had back then.
We mopped up as best as we could, but it was still damp when we went away, and we returned to a lovely mouldy patch on the carpet.

Luckily it was only surface and it washed out easily.

My pants.

Eyebrow tweezers.

As a teenager, family were setting off for our first trip abroad. Df was getting more annoyed with me by the minute because I was anxious, nervous and kept asking if he had the passports, the tickets, the money. He just snapped at me yes, stop going on.

Got to the airport and he'd forgotten his wallet, so no money. No credit cards. He didn't speak to me for a while after that!

Helloandgoodmorning2 · 27/05/2025 13:36

Our suitcase of clothes! We both thought the other had brought it downstairs. We were staying in rural Wales and had to wait until the next day to drive to Holyhead Tescos to buy some clothes.

PsychoHotSauce · 27/05/2025 13:36

My DM once forgot to pack any shoes. All she had were the trainers she wore on the plane, to a pretty rural beach destination. That was funny.

Been there - done that - fortunately the local Specsavers were able to supply me a similiar prescription of contacts.

My jeans and coat

Doesn't sound too bad... but the holiday was to England in October and we lived in the Mediterranean!

JDM625 · 27/05/2025 13:40

Not me but DH. We'd flown to a remote part of Scotland for a wedding, and DH left his shirt at home. We walked to the nearest shops, but no clothing stores. He borrowed a shirt off the best man and somehow fashioned cufflinks from my hair ties!

Forgottenmyphone · 27/05/2025 13:40

My DD’s inhaler

We also once got home to discover the freezer had died while we were on holiday. The smell was horrendous.

FictionalCharacter · 27/05/2025 13:41

Our Christmas presents, on a holiday at Christmas when the kids were young.

Peridot1 · 27/05/2025 13:42

Any spare underwear. So for a week driving around rural Bulgaria I was washing my undies out every night. Thankfully it was hot so they dried fairly quickly!

Kevin

I wouldn't have blamed you for doing it on purpose. He was annoying AF!

thecomedyofterrors · 27/05/2025 13:46

All the kids Father Christmas presents, when we were out of the country. Discovered on Christmas Eve morning. Nightmare!

Clockpic · 27/05/2025 13:46

I'd made flapjacks for our daily packed lunch on a walking holiday. Left everything ready for DH to pack the car before picking me up from work to leave in Friday eve. He forgot the flapjack. Poor DH, that was not a happy journey!

Evenstar · 27/05/2025 13:49

Someone I knew left her contraceptive pills at home, didn’t realise till they got to the ferry at Dover, they rebooked for a later ferry and went back for them. Not sure what excuse they made to their three teenage children 😳

reluctantbrit · 27/05/2025 13:50

All our coats. It was so warm the previous weeks we didn't use them for days.

Still in use (well me and DH, DD outgrew hers after 2 years)

@Clawdy - we once forgot to empty the bins so texted the neighbour and he brought them out.

shellyleppard · 27/05/2025 13:52

My dad used to work abroad in the 70's/80's. He once went away wearing his slippers..... didn't come home for 3 months 🙃

Chattie89 · 27/05/2025 13:52

My grandparents came to stay with us over Christmas, they live 3 hours away and left the bag of presents in their kitchen. Grandmother was distraught and couldn't stop crying. My poor uncle got dispatched into the night by his wife on Christmas Eve to do a 6 hour round trip to collect them.

They were not even Santa presents !!

Doggymummar · 27/05/2025 13:54

I switched the fridge off after emptying it to save electric

But

It was connected to the freezer and I got home after three weeks to a fiat full of bluebottles and it smelled of dead bodies. I can't believe no one had called the police, to look for a corpse. When I cleaned it up, I vomited frequently which was helpful. It also dropped all over the communal stairway and halls as I didn't want to take it in the lift. Noone said a word, it was weird.
